JollySipper Posted October 14, 2020 Posted October 14, 2020 Finally got the lil shoebox kit. It's the '49 coupe "Gas Man". It looks like a really nice kit, with two complete engines and several build options...... You probably know me well enough to know I'll be doing this as a mild custom. Colors are picked out, it will be Tamiya Pearl Light Red with gray below the trim on the body and a gray and white interior.... Any cool custom needs a throaty rumble, so I chose to build the what I believe is a Cadillac engine...... Here's the basis of it. I hope you guys follow along! Any and all comments are welcome...... Thanks......
JollySipper Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 Cool, thanks Carl and Ray! Glad you're interested.....
Misha Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Always enjoy seeing another Shoebox build TJ! I’m about to use TS-59 on my current build, looking forward to yours. Cheers Misha
espo Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Always enjoy seeing what different builders come up with for this kit.
JollySipper Posted October 16, 2020 Author Posted October 16, 2020 Thank you Misha and Dave! Here's today's progress....... Painted the body color on the belly, and started to mask for spraying the frame itself black.
Misha Posted October 16, 2020 Posted October 16, 2020 That’s looking good TJ. Did you also do the bottom of the interior tub? Depending on how ambitious one is, the interior tub is begging for greater detail to the point I sawed off the side and switched them side to side with greater detail scratchbuilt into them. Pleats were added to rear seat and rear shelf with 64 Fairlane buckets. Following along, Cheers Misha
JollySipper Posted October 16, 2020 Author Posted October 16, 2020 Misha, that interior looks really good! I've thought about adding some detail to the interior, just not sure what I'm gonna do yet. Definitely need to find some door handles and window cranks as the ones molded in are very faint..... Today's progress! Finished the masking and sprayed the frame black.... Couldn't figure out how to mask the wheel wells cleanly, so I just sprayed them also..... Thanks!
JollySipper Posted October 17, 2020 Author Posted October 17, 2020 Today I'm goofing around with rolling stock.... Think I'll use these! It's the Radir wheels from the Batmobile in the kit tires......... I've got some '61 Impala taillights that should work for center caps.
JollySipper Posted October 20, 2020 Author Posted October 20, 2020 Thanks, fellas... I've been saving these wheels for a special project to come along. Got the engine all done! Thanks....
BlackSheep214 Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 That’s gonna be a bad @$$ two tone color scheme. But enough of that... we wanna hear her purr and growl with the pedal to the metal. Looking good!
JollySipper Posted October 22, 2020 Author Posted October 22, 2020 Got the chassis all done! Also mocked up a few pics so I could get you guys' opinion...... With skirts or without? I kinda like it better without....... Still contemplating getting the styline parts from the '50 convertible for the body, if I do that I'll definitely use some skirts then..... Thanks for looking, and any comments are welcome.......
Modlbldr Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Looking good! Nice looking chassis. I'd say go without the skirts. Later-
Quiet Eric Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 With mag wheels and a forward rake, absolutely no skirts. Looks good!
Sledsel Posted October 22, 2020 Posted October 22, 2020 Looking cool.. No skirts unless you lower the rear. IMO

JollySipper Posted October 22, 2020 Author Posted October 22, 2020 Thanks for the responses, fellas! I agree the skirts would look better if the rear was lower, even like a tail-dragger maybe....

It is double tough to get low in the back without major surgery, if realism is important to you. Nice work so far. Looking good
JollySipper Posted October 24, 2020 Author Posted October 24, 2020 I read about this kit before I got it, and did see where you had said that..... I remember your build, it looked really cool!
