MPC/AMT has tried to upgrade the kit a bit here and there over the years, but, it is still basically the same. The last version before it became the Duke's car was a Stock Car and thus, it did not have much street car detail left. It had the Charger 500 flush rear window instead of the tunnel style that is normal on the Charger. I think it has been corrected since. Trust me, when I got my hands on it back then, I did not care or know what was wrong with it. All I knew is that it was going to be doing some knarly jumping over my other models as soon as I got it built! Which was an hour later! LOL!

How did you manage to squeeze in the rear wheels? I tried different slicks on mine and had to use the kit tires since the others would not fit.

This is a pretty basic build. Orange body, tan interior and the engine can be anything you like. The "hero" car ran 440 Magnum and it was orange in color. Most of the other cars ran either 383's or whatever it had to move it until they wrecked them. My only attempt at accuracy would be the push bar and the CB Antenna Have fun! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Lee_(car)

AMT M&H Racemaster Dragster Slicks & Parts Pack Tires
Daddyfink replied to Gregg's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Actually, the front rims in Round 2's PP005 parts pack are brand new, with a five bolt pattern. The Ohio George front rims are a four bolt, and a holdover from the original tooling. The rear rims in the parts pack are the newly tooled extras found in the Ohio George kit. Another reason to get these sets! -

I just wish they where done in 1/16th! -
Simple solution to the NASCAR dilemma. Don't make them anymore! I would be totally fine with that! There are tons of them on the $5 dollar tables at the kit shows to last a lifetime! We actually once got a request from the Military to please stop sending them to the troops! They where tired of building the same thing!! I think Round 2 has the right idea of re-issuing kits with updated parts in them. As for new kits, use the licensing you have already and keep making new kits with them. As for the how kits are made, there was a really nice article in National Dragster a few years back showing the process for the production of the Revell Racing Team back in the early 70's. It might be available on the NHRA website still. And, for some reason, I remember once seeing an episode of Mr. Rogers where he visits Revell and shows the process of making a kit. I remember the Convoy van on the production lines.

Tom West has worked for Revell, Aurora and MPC. He has done work for Action, AMT and Accurate Miniatures with the McLaren ktis. He went on to do quite a few killer cars and bikes with his Milestone Development group. And to top it off, he is one of the top Drag Racing Photographers of all time and very well known for his X-Ray drawings of famous racing subjects. He told me about how they turned the Charger 500 kit into the General Lee, how the McLaren kit was perfect until Accurate Miniatures go their hands on it. How the guys at Aurora took the funny car prints of the real car seriously and ended up doing the engines with the rotating assemblies! And many other cool stories from the modeling world.

AMT M&H Racemaster Dragster Slicks & Parts Pack Tires
Daddyfink replied to Gregg's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Ok, lets see. These wheels come in the re-issue Ohio George Willys kit. To get more of THESE wheels and tires, you would have to buy this kit again and raid it for them . Last time I bought this kit, it was $25 bucks. So, I know have ANOTHER AMT Willys kit in the collection, and this one, is missing tires! That cost me $25 bucks! I already have multiple copies of this kit, both original and re-issues, why would I want another one? Oh yeah, the wheels and tires. Now,before we get into the "I can get this or that" discussion. I am only talking about these wheels and tires! And only because no one else is offering them. And no, this is not including resin products, since they are even more expensive and then the real crying would start! A comparable set from Speed City is almost $20! I am sure not all hobby shops or online vendors with be charging the full price, and if you act now, you can get the for the $13.99 from Round 2 website. -
How did you get started building models?
Daddyfink replied to clovis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For me it started when I was about 6 and used to hang out at my Grandparents house. My uncle, who was a college student at the time, had a really cool collection of kits and I would just spend hours looking at them and reading, or looking at, his Hot Rod Magazines. Finally one day they got me a Revell Snap Together Bug and I was on my way! I put my building on hold after High School and resumed again in my mid 20's. I have not looked back since, until now! -
One would believe that with today's advancements in computer aided design, rapid prototyping and CNC machines, they would be making all kinds of stuff. But it appears that is not the case. At least with U.S. kit makers, and if I am wrong, please, somebody correct me! I have seen a trend with some foreign kit makers to actually use computer generated images on the sides of their boxes and most likely they are from the computer generated designs of the kit. And they are sharp and very clean kits. We may have started it, but man, they perfected it.

Well, post one so we can see what you are talking about

Nice job! I definitely have to build me one! Hope it comes out this nice.

I hope Leonard Hatch bought it just for parts! And even then he paid too much! -

$13.99 is not bad. For the price of one kit, you can get two sets of wheels instead of one. I'm ok with that. -
Well, I assumed it was ok after seeing non-model related items posted. Sorry if I offended anyone, it was not my intent.

I don't buy everything that comes out anymore. Not because I am cheap, its because I probably already have it. Yes, I have more than I will ever build, but I am going to try! But that has not stopped me from buying more. That is part of the fun of being in this hobby. The excitement and anticipation of a new kit in your hands! Sure, we may put it away and never build it, but hopefully, somebody will someday. After all, somebody bought all my vintage kits for the first time, right? Bring on the 2014 kits!
