AMT 1962 Mercury Monterey Convertible Annual Review
ChrisBcritter replied to RDean58's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Got one of these verts as a stalled project from 40 years ago; two-toned Pactra medium and Testors dark metallic blue. One-o-these-days... The side pipes, minus one outlet, went under my chopped and channeled IMC '48 Ford. -
Man, some great Styline pieces in there! I bet the "A" front and rear could be adapted to a '59 Buick, and that "B" front end might be just the ticket for the custom '60 El Camino I have in the pipeline.

This '50 Ford went through the ice of Lake Waubesa in Wisconsin back in 1961; it was found along with the remains of its two occupants in 2004: (image from here) -
Got some goodies this evening. Most of a '64 Caddy engine; will modify the trans into a Slim Jim Pontiac Roto Hydramatic as has been discussed on a couple threads. Anyone have a Revell parts pack Pontiac bellhousing? Modelhaus wheelcovers for the '57 Roadmaster project: Craftsman '66 Skylark chassis for the AAM resin kit: And finally a cheeep deal on a rather "stanced" Revell '62 Chrysler Newport. Between this heap and the purple metallic one I got from Tom P. there should be enough pieces to complete a build: I wonder if anyone's used the Jo-Han roof/glass to make this a Newport hardtop?

Reminds me of the time about 20 years ago when a '58 Vette was pulled out of a flooded quarry back east (PA or NJ?) and was found to have only 58 miles on it, and the remains of the factory plastic on the seats - it had been hotwired and probably stolen from a dealer; the thieves took the engine and swapped on wheels and wheel covers from a '57 Chevy, then deep-sixed it in the quarry. Not sure what happened to the remains; the magazine (Super Chevy?) article said the rear axle was salvageable but the body was mostly gone. -

It's a bit squarish, plus it's got that same taper on the body sides all the 1/25 AMT Deuces had. I still think it may have been based on a stillborn 1/25 project; paging Tim Boyd to confirm or deny...?

Favorite Obscure or Discovered Music Album
ChrisBcritter replied to afx's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Phantom's Divine Comedy. Obscure, yes, but I like it even though it's not what I usually listen to. "Calm Before the Storm" (at 8:07) is my favorite track, and was released as a single: And yes, the lead singer does sound a lot like Jim Morrison. -
Who else here is a musician or plays an instrument?

Now singing I can do - within a certain range. I love a good karaoke night, although I drove my friends nuts looking through every single song they had to avoid the ones with extended high notes. One of my happiest times was when I got a big ovation at a packed bar for "La Bamba" - can't quite match Ritchie Valens, but I can give David Hidalgo of Los Lobos a run for his money . Conversely, at a karaoke night for my car club, I picked "Light My Fire". To my surprise the track had the LONG instrumental break - so what to do? I improvised a weather report, then laid down on stage and pretended to take a nap until the vocal started again. Now both my brothers - and their kids - got the real musical talent in the family. Middle brother was a sax player from grade school through college, and ended up as a high school band director for over thirty years. Youngest one has played trumpet since he was a kid - mostly jazz and big band; even getting into a pickup group that backed the Temptations for a Chicago gig. -

Original AMT 1965 Lincoln Hardtop Review
ChrisBcritter replied to RDean58's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I did it the hard way: used the roof, glass and package shelf from an otherwise unsaveable '64 sedan body ('64-'65 roofs are the same) and transferred it to a '65 convertible. The top of the window area will need a bit of work; it's almost flat, but should have a slight curvature across it with the high point at the B-pillar. Some careful trimming plus a little reshaping of the drip rail will fix that. -
A small, pleasant story

Wonder if the sisters still have the '77 Suburban? If they took care of it like Brigid, it would be a collectible now. -
Biggest pet peeves on builds.
ChrisBcritter replied to LL3 Model Worx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Re fixing the fit on engine parts: Shoot, I expect to do that with these old kits - Tamiya isn't going to make a '60 Ford pickup, and I'll probably be too old to build by the time Moebius gets around to it, so... -
Jo-Han tires from the '70s, in my experience, are't as bad in that respect - the USA Oldies kits I built in that period don't seem to show any tire melt on the wheels.

Squatters in my paint booth
ChrisBcritter replied to Ironman63's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Awwwww... Of course you'll be the only guy on the forum who will have to remove down from a paint job. -
Hi Scott - Those are the optional finned knockoff wheelcovers Buick offered on the Riviera and AMT used in the '63 kit; the base version was like I posted but without the seven blades (those were Electra-only): I got one of them modified with a lot of very careful trimming and I'll be molding it tonight.

School Bus Anyone??
ChrisBcritter replied to Oldmopars's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not 1/25, but I have a project going with one of these: Toy bank promo made by Superior Coach. I'm replacing the generic front end with the nose and running gear from the old Revell 1/48 '55 Chevy stake bed truck. Really looking forward to cutting out all those windows . -
I'm trying to get a dirty grey/brown wash over flat black lacquer. I thinned Testor's acrylic weathering colors down about 4:1 with their Aztek universal thinner and airbrushed it on a scrap part that had been sprayed flat black. Ta-da! Beaded up like crazy. Tried adding a little rubbing alcohol and... beaded up again. Any suggestions? Normally I'd brush the stuff on but I don't want brush strokes. Thanks for any help you can suggest!
