  1. I remember that article - sharp job; nice to see it in living color again!
  2. Wait a minute - weren't we recently talking about a kit that had a short run, and was believed lost/irrevocably modified, whose parts may have unexpectedly turned up, as a possible 2016 release? Hmmm...
  3. Must have been Revell - I had a couple '60s era Revell kits that were clear underneath.
  4. Here's the original thread:
  5. Did they have the tooling for the glass as well? I'd like to see a photo of this test shot if you could post one. You can't really build an accurate coupe from the convertible kit as-is; the interior isn't correct - the promo tool has the right one with the package shelf and ventilation louvers.
  6. Not too bad; it was molded with a separate roof and chrome B-pillars. The windshield frame had sun visors. I wonder if they were jumping the gun to make a convertible but it turned out there wouldn't be a 1/1 until '62 - did Chevy plan a '61 vert but had to delay it? I went ahead and built mine as a phantom convertible using the top boot from the IMC '48 Ford:
  7. R&R '59 Chevy convertible top, cheap, for my '59 Pontiac - figure since it's a vacuform part it can tweaked to fit without much grief.
  8. That was a '59; I had one as a kid but I don't remember if there was a top boot in it. Funny they didn't modify the '59 tooling to make the '60.
  9. MPC '32 Chevy panel truck? I hope I hope I hope...
  10. Green Christmases in Chicago seem to happen about as often as white ones, according to the Tribune - I just hope for no big storms in February or March when we're all sick of looking at it!
  11. Got some Bondic today - looking forward to experimenting with it!
  12. That Vicky wouldn't be the first VW Deuce. This was posted on the H.A.M.B. by member Bashnscratch: Could have used a bit more finesse... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/sitting-and-rotting-picture-thread.330573/page-345
  13. Heard back from the seller on the '40 Mercury parts - wouldn't budge on the price but would throw in the custom half-top he found. He relisted the items and I grabbed 'em - somebody had already put them on their watch list. I figure it this way - I got the rest of the car for free in a bag of junkers so I'm still ahead, more or less. And just so you know - these were the only pieces he had; he didn't break up a whole kit.
  14. Is the kit molded in gold? If so how does it look (swirls, etc.)?
  15. Not a bad idea (except for the calories). One suggestion: Turn it upside down and use the larger part for the lid. You could even fill the recess in the bottom (formerly the lid) with plaster to make a base.
  16. Excellent kit. If you want dual exhaust you'll have to source it from the convertible. The side trim is all separate pieces that fit into deep depressions in the body, so there's a bit of work if you want to delete the trim. I have one that's a long-stalled project - a mild custom with an AMT parts pack '57 Buick grille and '60 Olds taillights, and a Caddy V8.
  17. That's OK - I found a windshield from an incomplete '62 convertible I parted out (the one that gave its back half to the '61 vert).
  18. Please keep us posted on that one - I've never seen one built with the camper. Got plans for the tonneau cover?
  19. I admit sometimes I wonder if I'm bidding against someone here... I usually bid so lowball I'm surprised when I win. Got the car all apart (thankful it was Ambroid cement) and cleaned up the mold lines, removed the custom parts, and worked on aligning the front and rear bumpers - these usually have fit issues. Found stress lines in the windshield but I may have a spare.
  20. '62 Impala, minus the spinners.
  21. The aforementioned '61 Continental arrived today; a bit dirty but thankfully very little glue damage - looks like Ambroid cement, or something that didn't eat much into the plastic. No glue on the glass runners under the roof (yay!), and the custom bits in the tail should be removable without much drama. There's one chassis screw missing; I should be able to find a spare. (I told my friends, "I must have a loose screw somewhere!" And they agreed.)
  22. Me too - I'm trying to think of a tactful way to buy back the '60 I gave to a friend when I moved back here.
  23. I've had better luck getting the bulk of the paint off with purple stuff and using a small amount of the ELO for a final scrub (with a toothbrush or a bristle brush in a Dremel) to loosen the last residue, then a final slosh in the purple stuff and rinse it all off.
  24. I built the Lorinser version of that kit many years ago for a friend; don't recall any assembly problems and it came out very nice. Try it - you might like it!
  25. That's about all I do anymore. I guess I like the challenge of salvaging an old heap - just like I wanted to restore real cars when I was a kid. I don't leave them stock, necessarily - my '61 Bonneville, '62 Impala and all six Continentals are going to be stock, but my '64 Chevelle, '65 Dodge Monaco and '61 Falcon will be street machines, '60 Chrysler Windsor a mild custom, '61 Comet and '60 Falcon Bellflower-style lowriders, and that '58 Ford hardtop will be a street freak (!) once I settle on a BBF engine and find a good straight front axle setup (anyone parting a Little Red Wagon?). None of these are likely to be produced again, so it's fun to do something creative with a rare kit without messing up a mint one.
