Scratchbuilt cobra neck lowboy
gotnitro? replied to gotnitro?'s topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Somehow I lost a few progress pics..gotta leap ahead to the details inside the goose neck. .mainly the support that drops onto the tractor during unloading ops, and the triangle actuators. Everything was built from rod, tubes , and sheet stock from pics .. a quick mock up pic ...gotta make sure it looks right..lol ! The deck will be covered w basswood strips and leaving the center exposed to show the framing . I dislike hiding all the work under panels. So far I'd had about 2 weeks works tied up into this...working on it about 2 hrs a night after daughter went to bed . Really fun project Thanks for looking -

Scratchbuilt cobra neck lowboy

Now the fun part..the cobra neck! ! A friend was kind enough to take excellent photos of a trailer clearing up some of the vague areas I was unsure of..thanks Gary ! I used .040 sheet for the man beam this time then added the flanges once I had a suitable profile.. Inside the frames was a area we started calling the triangle...garys pics came in very helpful here.. Thanks for looking -
I took on an easier project this time ! My buddy wanted a lowboy for his upcoming truck build , and the old options didn't fit the time line. I volunteered my time and started building. The project is a tri axle rogers detachable " cobra neck " lowboy. The drop air suspension came from the excellent set from moluminum, rims will be mobius chomies, and low pro tires from double take replicas.!!! The major parts will be my normal favored method. I started the frame cheating using plans from the manufacturer site, bought a huge pile of beams for the deck . Smaller I beams became the supports.. Looking closer at the crossmember pics reveals the notched rails I made for the "bucket trough " giving escavator room . That was one feature I really wanted to add.. The front suspension mounts on a pivot yoke, so I needed to add a reinforcing plate to the angle section for it . Next up the front...the cobra neck !!

gotnitro? replied to dreadpyrat's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Since your looking at the Iwata airbrush, hobby lobby sells a screw on moisture trap that attaches right on your brush, hobby lobby has them . Doing military theme most builders use either tamiya , testors , or AK paints lately. Most are acrylic that simple 91 percent alcohol will easily clean .the testors is enamel, use their cleaner the ab will last yrs. I just replaced my iwata hpcs after 10 yrs, with another cause I used Delstar thinner and it melted the seals -

I actually didn't spend much time on the detroit..one of my areas I neglect coming over from the armor side . The cab won't tip enough to really see under anyway with the Texas bumper I botched that -

KW aerodyne wrecker finished !!
gotnitro? replied to gotnitro?'s topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The light bar was purchased from police cars.com, and painted w chrome, gloss black, and smoke . The mirrors were scratchbuilt and resin cast , the mounts are pins I bent and installed in drilled holes. I'm very satisfied with the results even though there's numerous changes I'd made now.. -
I'm calling the build finished , there's some thing hugely gratifying about finishing a build I've wantedto try for so long . just had to wait for my skills to improve before whacking plastic. Let's take a walk around the truck and show what I hope is a tribute to this amazing truck. That's about it! Any feedback welcome

gotnitro? replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Browsing the scale firehouse site turned up several options. One I thought looked very convincing is rustoleum key lime . Here's a pic of the can Hope this helps ya out ! Swing by the auto parts stores too, a well stocked one might have other options . -
