I just picked this up at the store, got home, and tested. Makes a perfect cut. I used I think it is .030 thick styrene sheet, and just a bit firm and it sliced right through, didn't distort or anything. Personal Portable Paper Cutter. <$20.00, can't beat that.

Panel line marker - Gundam Marker
fantacmet replied to Jantrix's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
It's not quite a technical pen. Same premise and basic design but the materials are different and so is the "ink", they work very well. I use the other type and then use an eraser to remove the rest to remove the "overrun" as it were. -
Cool idea for a load/trailer
fantacmet replied to fantacmet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There we go, quick email to find out how much it weighs let them know you want to model it to be pulled behind a bigrig, and you want to be accurate and they'll probably let you know. -
Cool idea for a load/trailer
fantacmet replied to fantacmet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well as for how much it weighs in at, I've seen a couple real life, that might even be one of them, because the ones I saw were trailers in and of themselves, just like that one. Most of the people who have these, built them themselves. I know they've traveled with the monster truck shows. I have a guy at works who works with Monster jam when they're in the region out here I can ask him if he has the contact information, or if he has any other information on the rig itself. -

Those rollers are pretty common, but that cold mill isn't. Styill the giant robot can't be beat for originality. -

I noticed on mine the tires on one side in one section are larger. So the outside diameter on one half the tire is larger than the other. Did yours come the same way? -

Wish I had seen this earlier, I could have setup and made a video this weekend for you how to do the wire hinges, and nail them right on almost every time. -
Here you guys go, this would be interesting for someone with more time, money, and scratchbuilding skill to do and it'd be one very original build. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ROPhfb1QRuc/UHEgx_yH-kI/AAAAAAACHRw/UzGiPFGL5X0/s640/DSC_0141.JPG

Making exhaust stacks

While i'm not Bill, yes you can find that size solder. Look in the welding section of your local hardware store. -

Making exhaust stacks
fantacmet replied to Fat Brian's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For exhaust stacks drilling the tips is what we are trying to avoid, as that's what the kit parts are. The alloy is a good choice. You might be able to find it a bit cheaper from a firearms place though. Check Numrich gun parts or Cheaperthandirt.com. Stuff is nice and strong too. For removal if you are worried about discoloration, you can drop it in a pan of water and bring it to boiling, then pick the part out with tweezers, let it drain into the pan, let the water cool and scoop out your now solidified metal. I'm lucky enough if I really need to use any I'll just go to a friends house and use his. I like the idea of the small bender there made basically with two pulleys it looks like. I've got a mill I might have to try making one. -
You know it's funny because just a couple of threads away is this. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92000

I took some half inch ibeam, about 3/4 inch long, stuck the saw inside and let r rip. Glued them down just like oyu see on top of that sheet, right at the edge, then too some 8th in inside dimension c-channel some clamps and Tamiya extra thing and voila. Trailer will likely be black, and for the rig I'm thinking black and gold. Black on top with black fenders, with gold on the lower half, gold tanks, black frame. I've got some diamond plate here so will probably do some diamond plate rear fenders for it. If I were better at certain things I would make some for the front too, but going to make a big diamond plate bumper for the front. I am sitting here looking at this turbo charged Cat 6 cylinder, from the KW W900 Revell. SERIOUSLY thinking about dropping it in there. Assuming it will fit under the hood, and not drag the pan. I'm seriously thinking about adding the single wheeled third axle to the rear. The type that just uses a pair of front wheels, if anyone knows how I might pull this off let me know. Because if I can get a full set of 10 hole alcoa's, and get a pair of Float Steers, I could make it happen easily. Plus this big ol' Cat engine. As for the trailer pics here um, sorry I couldn't get it all into one frame so had to do two.

So this will start with the REO obviously. I have most of the engine of the payhauler and I have the main frame of the beam trailer done. Here are pics of the rear of the frame of the REO, with the 5th wheel ramps done. The frame has been stretched and has a smooth deck plate to it right now, but later will have a chromed diamond plate on there.

Turbo AND supercharger. Hrm..................... Seen on a car before but never a rig. Good job on the plumbing. -
Pete 359 vs Dimaond Reo for heavy.
fantacmet replied to fantacmet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah I've decided to go with the DR. That one has inspired me for the headache rack and a different front bumper. I'm thinking rear wheels similar to what you have on there and fronts being the wide aluminums. -

I like utilitarian and the custom look. There's more than just chrome or spokes though. The spokes I've seen have been devastating, though they still have their place, and I understand some old timers SWEAR by them no matter how many times they come apart and almost get them killed, there's a reason why most have switched to aluminum, and they don't have to be chrome plated or polished. Lighter weight in the rotating mass, better mileage. Maybe a tiny percent but it adds up on these big rigs. There's the steed buds painted or chrome, the 10 holes, polished, plain, painted or chromed. This particular rig I want a set of 10 holes. Chromed? Probably be stripping chrome off of whatever I can get my hands on. Either go straight aluminum or black with them. Haven't made up my mind. The trucks I want to build straight utilitarian, I don't have the dough for yet. I do intend on several fleet rigs in consolidated freight livery. Knight transportation, Oak Harbor Freight Lines, I even want to build a setup of I think it's Bateman Casket Company. The goal is someone who took an older truck and rebuilt it, made it look really nice, dressed it up a bit and uses it as a mildly customized heavy haul. Not someone who found an old pile of BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH got it running and scrapes it along leaving pieces of itself all over(though I do have those projects in the future). I don't order kits though. My projects are determined by however much $$ I can spare and what is on the shelf at the local hobby shop. I suppose I could go get some small aluminum pucks and toss them on my lathe and use a friends rotary table. Didn't quite want to hit that route though. Point is, the battle between straight painted everything and all out chromed everything is completely ridiculous. There's not a thing wrong with either style. There isn't a thing wrong moving forward with technology. Most of the old style isn't as practical as some of the old timers would like to think. It's also nowhere near the garbage that the new timers like to think either. I'll get off my soap box now. No need to turn my thread into a whizzing match over this style or that style. -
Pete 352 Monochrome Blue
fantacmet posted a topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I WAS doing this up as the Patriot version. Felt like keeping the blue chassis, but didn't like the way the decals came out. So stripped it in some Super Clean, and decided on a monochrome paint scheme. The interior is model master Fabric Tan. Tanks will be the same blue. Just about everything will be on the exterior except for the chrome and a few small bits. Frame is stretched, but not by much. 2 feet maybe. Don't really remember, and I have it all painted over now. One piece smoothy deck plate(DUH). The blue is plain old Rustoleum enamel. After looking at the pic I missed a few spots with the blue, but that shall be rectified. -

I like the first one, but where do you get the wheels/tires in the first pic? I'm so wanting a set of those for one of my builds. -

What do these look like, if they are what I am thinking they are I'm looking for a pair for the front of a rig I'm doing. -
Any Future Truck Projects or Goals ?
fantacmet replied to Old Buckaroo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I gotta get off my butt and finish the logging truck, finish my 352, my heavy haul, and then Get to work on my MASSIVE stretched prostar and the 53 foot trailer. Overall will probably be just a bit shy of 4 foot long on that setup. Total scale length will probably be about 80 foot. Practical? Not likely. Street legal? Probably not. Cool looking? Oh hell yeah. -
While it technically wasn't a trade Petetrucker donated a couple of lost to the sink monster air brake canisters to my Pete 352. He even re-sent them after the dumb postal worker couldn't figure out how to decipher the address and sent it back.

Pete 359 vs Dimaond Reo for heavy.
fantacmet replied to fantacmet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Are the front wheels supposed to sit that far back or should I be doing something before I get that far? Or is it just an optical illusion from the angle of the camera. Nice lookin build. Love the tanks. -

fantacmet replied to fantacmet's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just wish I could find a set of 10 hole wheels to trade for the REO ones. Incuding the wide fronts that you seem to see alot of on newer rigs. Can't afford the resin stuff. Maybe I'll post int he wanted, but y'all convinced me to go with my original plan of using the Reo.
