Stupid question time
mikemodeler replied to 72 Charger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
MOPAR- My Old Pig Ain't Running Gasser- the uncle who farts after every family meal but keeps getting invited back Curbside- those are models we build when we are in a slump and don't want to detail the chassis and engine. -
Plastic Models.com has them for $21.95 and if you are going to order 2 of them, you can get free shipping! Use coupon code 01A13.

1959 Chevy Brookwood Wagon - Updated 2/27
mikemodeler replied to IceMan Collections's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looks cool and definitely spot on! If I may ask, where did you source the flame mask? Those flames look great and I am wanting to try them on a build I have going. -

mikemodeler replied to Belugawrx's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That is one beautiful paint job and the truck itself is outstanding! I have a couple of these kits and hope to do it justice like you have. Hurry up and finish it, you are so close! -
Wondering about all the Forum's members...
mikemodeler replied to Ramfins59's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Thanks for starting this topic Rich, I wondered the same thing. I do notice under the birthdays that sometimes there are multiple people with the same age and birth date and wonder if they signed up under different names or if truly there were that many people born on the same day & year who are members here? And a question for Harry. When someone is banned from this forum, are all traces of them removed? Meaning their posts, user name(s), contact information, etc.? -
I thought the same thing. Why would someone leave a loaded gun in a closet? We will probably hear more about this in the coming days and wouldn't surprise me to learn it wasn't an accident.

Rotator Wrecker Kits?
mikemodeler replied to Birdman44's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That is great news, let's hope it progresses beyond the rumor stage. It would be nice to see some modern wrecker kits (light, medium or heavy duty!) and a flatbed option! -
A couple of Michigan State Police Cruisers
mikemodeler replied to Chuck Most's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Those are sharp looking Chuck! -
A couple of thoughts here: 1. The Testors One Coats tend to have a LOT of metallic flakes in them, and as was mentioned above, do a spray test to make sure it looks good to YOU! 2. The Tamiya Lacquers are fantastic and easy to work with. They have a ton of colors and probably more than Testors. I use both but prefer the Tamiya. 3. Tamiya Lacquers (and Testors) can be ordered and shipped UPS from Tower Hobbies. They have various offers/discounts that makes ordering from them too easy! One of their popular options is free shipping on $25 orders and their service is usually quite fast. Best of luck in this next build, looking forward to seeing it.

Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
mikemodeler replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I get emails almost daily from Hobby Lobby and most of the time I don't pay attention to them. Today, because I was bored, I opened it because it was titled "Clearance, up to 80% off!" and thought, what the heck! They have some model kits listed and as near as I could tell they were 40% off. Not the 80% I was hoping for, but still a bargain if what they have there appeals to to. I did see the Revell 63 Corvette Hardtop, the TeeVee buggy, and a couple of others there that might be what you are looking for. Go to their main page at Hobby Lobby.com and search for clearance. -
I have a couple of beautiful resin 67 Camaro bodies from Greg Wann and aren't really in need of more, but would definitely be buying at least one, depending on the options. If Revell does decide to do a 67 Camaro Convertible, I know where a perfect 67 Pace Car is at for them to measure.

I like it, for once it isn't a red Corvette!

1971 Ford Ranger XLT
mikemodeler replied to Harry Joy's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That came out very nice. I am worried about the fit issues you mentioned, but I will have to dig mine out and see if I can make a go of it! Nice color choices and very well detailed. -
That looks nice! I was working on my 67 Camaro today and rubbed through the paint, so back to the spray booth for me! What color red is that?

Sears certainly did themselves in with some poor management decisions along the way, but the consumers also helped them with abusing the return policies they had. I worked at a Sears Paint and Hardware store in the early 90's and the borderline criminal abuse of policies made me sick. Guys would stop in at 6 PM, buy an electric chainsaw and go home and trim a tree or cut it down and return right before closing wanting their money back because "it didn't do the job" despite being covered in sawdust! When asked if they wanted to buy a gas model, they laughed and said "No thanks". Obviously they knew how to game the system, just like the retired guys who spent their days going to garage sales looking for damaged Craftsman hand tools to return for new replacements! I always loved the guys who would bring in rusty pliers and ratchets, thinking they would be getting shiny new ones. Our store policy, as well as Sears, was to repair or replace defective hand tools. When it came to rusty tools, we went in the back room, sprayed them with WD-40 and got them working again, much to the customer's dismay. When they claimed that they were entitled to NEW tools, we reminded them to read the sign that said "Repair or Replace" and we had just repaired their defective tool. All of the ratchets have replaceable gear drives and are typically the only thing that fails on a ratchet and we were instructed to rebuild a ratchet unless we didn't have a kit to do so. Many customers were ticked off when we just didn't hand over a new $20-40 ratchet and instead rebuilt theirs! WalMart also grew weary of abusive returns. I remember reading a story about a customer would walk into a WalMart every spring, buy a lawn mower and use it all summer and then return it and get his money back. He would then buy a snow blower and like the lawn mower, use it all season only to return it at the end for a refund. This went on for about 2-3 years before Wal Mart caught on and changed their policies. One could argue the customer did nothing wrong as it was store policy, but most of us would agree that behavior like that only drives up the cost for the rest of us. Yeah, like Harry I have fond memories of shopping at Sears. Most of my kitchen appliances over the years have been Kenmore, because getting parts and service was easy! 90 percent of my hand tools in my tool box are Craftsman, many of them over 30 years old and I can't remember if I had to have any of them replaced under warranty. Going to Sears on a Saturday was an outing as my Mom and Dad were on different missions but I do remember driving away with tools, clothes and other items because of the convenience Sears offered a family. Sad to see them decline as they have, but like others have said, they failed to change and ventured into unrelated business areas that allowed Wal Mart, Target, Kohls and others step in and take that business from them.

Competitions in Maryland , or N Carolina this year ???
mikemodeler replied to Eshaver's topic in Contests and Shows
There is the Charlotte Auto Fair in September and The GoodGuys show in October, both at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Google them for dates/costs/etc. The cars and swap meet area are always packed, lots to see and do. Not much in the way of hobby shops anymore, although there is a good R/C shop across the border in Rock Hill SC, they have a couple of tracks and a ton of stuff. -
we will be expecting some (lots actually!) pictures from the show Len!

Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
mikemodeler replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mark, just a suggestion but you might want to speak with a manager or department worker and see if they can order stuff not stocked on their shelves. In retail, they look at sales history to determine what to stock but sometimes the people in charge don't realize what the demand is if it isn't stocked! How many people walk in, don't see what they are looking for and walk out? -
Is Hobby Lobby Restocking?
mikemodeler replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If they are resetting their model section, it is a good thing because: 1. They will have some models marked down for clearance, usually 40% off. Great chance to stock up on some kits to build later or get that kit you wanted for some parts cheaper! 2. They will have some NEW kits and hopefully ones you have been waiting for to get with the 40% off coupon! Like Art said, they go through cycles to reset their various departments and sections, so no need to panic! It is always good to check with someone at the store if you have a question or request, sometimes it is just a matter of them ordering from their warehouse or checking the backroom. I would love to see them add Tamiya spray paints (beyond the primers they already have) but realize that might be wishful thinking, given all the colors in the Tamiya line and the fact that they have a ton of Testors paints already. -
Great job Tom! As always your builds are spot on and well detailed.
-
That is a very nice custom, love the paint! These Revell snap kits might be basic in nature but they sure do build up nice. The body proportions are accurate and with a little work, they can be done up like a glue kit. I am working on one of these to replicate a car that was displayed at last year's MCACN show in Chicago and like yours, it will have a few custom touches.
-
Nicely detailed and very shiny paint! Like you, I build them the way I would want them to look if they were in my garage!

History of MPC's Rounded Line Trucks
mikemodeler replied to Fabrux's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I noticed that the "white" version is out, anyone pick one up yet? Despite still having a couple from the last release, I could be tempted to buy another one (or four! LOL!). -
Places like this forum can help you identify the model before you send off for them. There is usually a thread on any given model and if not, start one and you will get some information back from the members here. The prices at Hobby Lobby are closer to MSRP, knowing that many people will be using the 40% off coupon. A $28 kit at Hobby Lobby is less than $17 with the coupon, not a bad deal.
