Moebius 67-72 Ford Pick-up news
mikemodeler replied to Dave Metzner's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Yes, it's the wrecker kit with the weird looking cab on it, sort of like a mini Peterbilt. The wrecker bed is close enough to the correct length, although if you wanted to create your own bed it wouldn't be hard to do. -

If you can source an OOP 75 or 76 Ford pickup kit, I think it would have the camper top and larger wheels, IIRC. Danny at Scenes Unlimited is casting 8 lug wheels, might have the hub caps too. -

If you source the Midnite Cowboy kit, you can build the truck in the picture with the wrecker bed from that kit and the Moebius pickup. -
The cost of trading kits
mikemodeler replied to mikemodeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mark, You have stated the reason why I trade kits. I have received some kits that I couldn't find locally but most of the time it is to help another modeler out. I have too many kits and won't get to building them all but if I can swap one of them for something I might build or can use to trade with someone else, then it's all good. And I believe that last sentence in your statement above was the basis for our last trade! -

Interesting project, nice start and looking forward to seeing it done. -
Dodge Holmes 440 Wrecker
mikemodeler replied to tonye66's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I'll be watching this one and anxious to see it done. That wrecker bed looks like a copy of the one in the Midnite Cowboy kit, which is a nice replica of the Holmes. -
That is very nice, usually don't see too many models painted white but yours looks spot on like the brochure!

I have enjoyed trading kits and have been able to get rid of stuff that I wasn't going to build, but wondered what others thought about the cost of trading? I just boxed up a kit and shipped it off via the post office for $7.75 and wondered how places like Tower Hobbies can afford to ship $25 worth of kits and stuff for free and still make money? I have thought about selling off some of my kits and am worried that with shipping averaging $7-10, how can I expect to make any money if the kit and shipping could be $20-30? How do the people who sell on eBay manage to make money selling with the cost of shipping? I have had great luck going to swap meets and unloading kits, but there are only a couple of them around here and I would like to sell more sooner. I welcome comments and suggestions.

Looking good, seems like you have mastered the art of the black paint job, congrats! Anxious to see it finished.

MPC 1984 GMC Pickup (Video Review) 2016 Reissue
mikemodeler replied to hpiguy's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Tom, The front bumper was left over from when this kit was issued as an 1982 model, which would have been correct as the 81/82 model years had the turn signals in the bumper and in 1983 they were moved to the grille. The seam on the bed represents a compartment that was featured on the truck this kit was based off of from the TV show The Fall Guy. In real life it is not a part of the 1:1 and should be filled in. Also, the 1:1 truck from the show was actually a long bed where as this is a shortbed. Toast, I believe there was a stepside kit, but my feeble memory seems to remember that kit being a Monogram or Revell and was a 70's version. MPC might have done a stepside, there is a post here about the history of these trucks and which kits were issued. If there was a step side, it has been out of production for awhile but you might be able to find one at a swap meet or on eBay. -
How many builds do you work on at a time?
mikemodeler replied to MrBuick's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This would be a fairly accurate description of me! I have a bunch of models that will literally take less than an hour each to finish and yet there I am starting on another one and adding to the pile! Yesterday was 80 degrees and low humidity and I found myself in the garage painting 5 bodies! Two are for kits that I haven't even started the rest of the model, I was just excited to be able to paint! And because the paint jobs came out so well, now I will HAVE to build them! The best solution for me is to focus on snap kits, then at least the kits have a chance of being finished! LOL! -
MPC 1984 GMC Pickup (Video Review) 2016 Reissue
mikemodeler replied to hpiguy's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Thanks for posting this review, doesn't look like much has changed. I wonder why they included a set of wheels that don't fit the tires? I will be picking one of these up, not that I need one, but ya know, what the heck! -
about how many models have you
mikemodeler replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I finally took an inventory and was surprised how many duplicates I had of some models, several of which I have NO intention of building but for some reason I bought them! It is not fun getting old, harder to see when building and can't remember what I have when shopping! -
AMX GT SHOW CAR RESIN KIT

Yup! If the car pictured above is the subject matter, count me out. If it were a regular AMX, I am back in. -

Old Trusty Truck
mikemodeler replied to St Louis Snacker's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice and realistic! I sure hope they don't ask customers to get into that truck without offering a free tetanus shot! -
Order your Tamiya paint online from Tower Hobbies. They have more colors than most hobby shops and you don't have to deal with a shop that doesn't appreciate your business. They often offer free shipping on orders over $25. The trick to a great looking paint job is in the prep work. Take your time, check and re-check the body work before you spray the color coats. Make sure your paint area is clean, the paint is at the right temperature and lay on the paint in light coats. If you are like me, you get impatient and want to rush the process, but I have noticed that when I take my time, I save myself from extending wet sanding and polishing.

Very Nice! I am to understand you built this 10 years ago? If so, that looks fantastic! Those always seem better to me when painted yellow.

One seroius stash...Humor
mikemodeler replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
According to my wife, my stash of 300 kits is TWICE that big! She proudly tells anyone who will listen that I have taken over the garage and bonus room (finished open room over the garage) with my model kits. I don't DARE mention how much closet space she has, because according to her, she hardly has any! She does support my hobby and encourages me to build more, she just would like to see me get down to 50 models or so, which I have been trying to do.
