1977 GMC K10
mikemodeler replied to Fabrux's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That is looking great Chris, nice details. I appreciate the tip on the cab backwall, it has bugged me too and your fix sounds like the perfect solution! That gray with white trim reminds me of the trucks I used to see around the Navy base in Northern Illinois where I grew up, they were that shade of gray and usually were bare bones vehicles. -
Looks good, nicely detailed and clean execution. I need to finish mine, maybe this weekend!

Added to my wish list at Tower Hobbies, will have to get a couple eventually!

Big Lots has changed their business strategy over the last 5-10 years and has become more of a bargain retailer than a closeout store it once was. Years ago Big Lots was similar to what Ollie's is today- a clearing house of merchandise that was manufacturer overstock, old product from closed stores, leftover items from store re-sets and consolidation of retailers. Back in the day they would get models in and the last time I bought them there, I think glue kits were $5.00 and snap kits were $4.00. The just released AMT 84 GMC pickup truck was one they had there and I remember buying 5 of them for $25 and now they are getting $25 each for them!

As Chris mentioned, a 10x10 space is not as big you think it is. I would suggest taping out a 10x10 square on your garage floor and set up a bench and whatever you plan to use for storage of your models. See how well you can walk around in there BEFORE you build it. If you do go for the 10x10, I would try to build your shed barn style with a loft area for storage and 8 foot side walls so you have maximized your space. Whatever you decide to do, it will seem big at first but then eventually it will get smaller, trust me I know! And as the others have mentioned, keep the room sealed off from the woodworking area. Caulk and weatherstripping will go a long way towards having a dust free environment for your models. Consider some type of exhaust fan for the woodworking side to remove the dust away from the model area.

Ollie's strike again
mikemodeler replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It probably depends on staff and storeroom space. If they have the people, they will get it out sooner to free up the back room as they have trucks arriving all the time. -
sanded through color with polishing kit
mikemodeler replied to kurth's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I agree with Brian, especially the part about making sure the compound is completely off of the hood. There will be adhesion issues if there is any residue left from the polishing compound. -
Is it just me ...

I can see where younger modelers who build either tuner cars or low riders would feel out of place at a club or show that had older members who weren't accepting of those types of vehicles. I personally am not into those two types but I do respect the effort others put into them and would welcome them at a show or club meeting as they have some skills that we all could learn from. Some of the paint jobs on low riders are incredible and way beyond my talent, and while I would probably not even attempt to replicate one, I sure can admire someone who can pull it off. I have a son who is in his early 20's and he dabbled in models for awhile over the last 10-15 years but never really stuck with it. Part of it was he was into aircraft and I am into cars/trucks, part of it is video games and the last part is his ADD. He tends to want fast results with most things he does and as we know, waiting for paint and glue to dry is not for those types of people! Part of the reason I have started selling off some of my stash is the realization that I won't build them all and no one in my family will take up the hobby so I might as well whittle it down to those kits I will build and get rid of the rest. When I have been at swap meets and shows lately, I have seen more younger modelers so there is hope! -
AMT 60 Chevy fleetside
mikemodeler replied to Gramps2u's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
nice and clean, well detailed. I have a couple of these in stash, need to get started on them soon! -
Looking good, but I think that little 4 cylinder engine is gonna need a turbo or nitrous! Make sure you get the power steering hooked up, those tires are huge!

That is a nice "What if?" rendition. I agree, it's a shame GM didn't think of that!

My 1.1 Project gets closer to being finished........
mikemodeler replied to Dave Van's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Looking nice Dave, just in time for cruising and car shows! Personally, I would polish the outer rims, give it a little bling! -
That model builds up so nicely, the proportions of the body are spot on. I just picked up one of these at Ollie's for $7.99- could have got the glue kit too but this one builds just fine!

Absolutely beautiful Bill, your details are so great I couldn't tell if the engine compartment was the model or the real car! I have had some models take me years but that is because I can't seem to finish them unless they are a snapper! LOL.

Ollie's strike again
mikemodeler replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry Dave, I have only been in Charlotte since 2005, never been to Deb's Model Car Emporium. Sadly there really aren't any hobby shops in the Charlotte Metro area with the exception of a mostly R/C place in Rock Hill and a Hobbytown USA in Mooresville. -
Ollie's strike again

I checked the store and they were on an endcap, whereas before they were towards the front of the store. Not sure what each store got, but the one in Matthews NC seemed to have ALOT of Revell models. The only Lindberg model that I saw was the 66 Chevelle, which I already have a couple of. I picked up the snap versions of: 77 Monte Carlo (red car with rally wheels and flames); 70 Chevelle (excellent kit) and a 57 Chevy (love those wheels!). I also got a 66 El Camino and an 07 Mustang (mostly for the engine to swap into one of the Moebius F 100 kits). -
Opening day is this Monday Harry.....Oh I forgot you are a South Sider!

Roto Rooter? Heck Jim my son works for them, you shoulda said something I could have got you a discount! Glad to hear all is well and you are at home resting. I am sure they gave you instructions on what and what not to do, just follow them and ease back into the groove.

GMC Astro wrecker
mikemodeler replied to The Modeling Hermit's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
That is one fine looking model ! I love the COE idea and yours is nicely detailed. -
Just a note to anyone contemplating buying from Scenes Unlimited- DO IT! The quality of Danny's product rivals the best there is in the resin world. His service is outstanding, as in FASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSST ! I placed an order on Monday morning and the mailman just left me a small box, less than 5 days from placement of order to it being in my fat fingers, doesn't get much better than that folks. And with his announcement he will have some more car and truck tires means there is another order coming from me pretty soon too!

White Freightliner wrecker
mikemodeler replied to The Modeling Hermit's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
That is very nice, love the conversion! I have one of those wrecker kits, haven't decided what truck I want to put it on yet. -
Me too Jonathan! I'm lucky if I can get it finished within 10 years!

Prayers that all goes as planned and you are able to be back here Friday evening Jim. Any procedure involving the arteries and blockages should be taken seriously, but as has been mentioned, the medical advances in this country have made them routine and a same day event. My Dad struggled with blood clots and went through many procedures over the years and in the beginning it was more like surgery but as time wore on, it became a much easier thing to deal with. He was able to resume activities relatively soon after and I am sure you will be no different. Take care!
