Jimmy Flintstone's 70 El Camino alert!
mikemodeler replied to ranma's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
That is a safe statement Danno and i agree with you. The kit I am discussing is one I bought off of eBay that was $50 and it did not mention who was casting it, and with your statement in mind, I went ahead and bought the kit. Once I got it, I realized it was cast by JF and it will require quite a bit of work to be even a halfway decent shelf model. I will go back to my old approach to resin- If I can't see it first before buying it, I will pass on it. There are only a couple of resin casters who have earned my trust to buy their product blindly. -
Texaco Tow Truck

If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, you could probably find something that would work and look realistic. That scratchbuilding is impressive (like all of your work Tom!), sure wish that wrecker was available in plastic! -

I just spent 20 minutes working on a JF body, and I would have tossed it had it not been a $50 kit. The thickness and waviness of the kit will render it a curbside with no interior detail as I don't have the patience to polish a turd. I have this El Camino kit and appreciate the heads up as I was thinking about building it. I will go over it a little closer and decide if it is buildable. -
As far as i know he is, although I don't know if he still offers the Impala chassis, he has focused more on medium and heavy duty truck conversions.

Can a dead garage door opener be fixed?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Geez Harry, this drama has been building for nearly 3 weeks and you still are going to wait another day to get it fixed? It must not be that big of an issue if you can spend all this time checking/ordering/testing all of the aforementioned parts before finally fixing it! I am as cheap as the next guy and love the challenge of fixing things but I can promise you I would not have taken 3 weeks to get this done, one weekend at most! I will be sure to tune in tomorrow to get an update on "As the garage door closes" -

Those wheels were also offered by Atlas. I have a friend with a correct 1:1 69 Yenko that has those wheels and they are Atlas. They look the same and the Revell 69 Yenko wheels are close enough. -

Nice, you'd think he would have corrected the windshield though. Any word on what this conversion kit is running? -

nice job on a kit that is somewhat basic but has a decent wrecker bed. Very clean and detailed. -

Very nice Chuck! Love the cab marker lights, clean and subtle! -
Chuck, If you had two toned that paint job with some white it could have been an U-Haul service truck! Nice job on it, you got me thinking this could be an option for one of those Modelhaus utility bodies sitting in the stash.

MENG 1/24 Ford F350 Super Duty Crew Cab: Sneak Peek Pics!
mikemodeler replied to Gregg's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
At 8 AM this morning one could buy this kit at Squadron for the web special price of $50.62 and here it is 12 hours later and it's back to $56.24! Don't understand this fluctuating pricing, might have to re-think ordering from them if they throw out specials and the prices are all over the place. -

Can a dead garage door opener be fixed?
mikemodeler replied to Harry P.'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I'm like you Harry, up for a challenge! A couple of years ago my old Sears garage door opener was giving up and I decided to buy a new one. After re-thinking that decision, I got out the ladder and crawled up to see what was wrong with it. Turns out a couple of worn out plastic gears from not having any grease on them was the problem. Wrote down the model and serial numbers, went to the Sears website and saw that the parts were in stock at the local outlet! $20 and about an hour later and my door was working fine! Twice a year a I climb up the ladder and slap some white lithium grease on the gears and she purrs like a brand new unit! My unit is from the pre-safety beam days so as long as I can keep it running, I will. Best of luck in your repairs! -
mid-late seventies Chevy wheels
mikemodeler replied to railsat2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you are referring to the 6 lug rally wheel, contact Casey, I think he was casting them at one time. They can also be found in the older Monogram Chevy pickup kit. Might be able to use the grille from that same kit for your conversion. -
Upcoming EMS week models

That Suburban and Van look like they could be from the old Emergency! TV show. Looking forward to seeing them completed. -
My plans would be to form a family corporation and make relatives employees of the corporation. It would structured in such a way that no one person could decide for the others how much to pay the employees, it would be up to a board of directors that would include outside people (accountant, tax lawyer, clergyman). There would be some serious financial planning done so the money would be around for awhile and charity work as well. Personally I would quit my current job and do some volunteer work and possibly open a small business, something automotive related most likely. I would spend more time working on models and car related projects but don't think I would go too crazy, again because as an employee, my wages would be limited. Interesting topic.

Such a bummer: Chinese-built Craftsman tools.
mikemodeler replied to LDO's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
It really is a sad commentary on how the buying public doesn't understand the correlation between price and quality. Retailers also haven't helped the cause with their liberal return policies as that has contributed greatly to the lower price/cheaper quality. I worked at a Sears Paint & Hardware store in the early 90's, mostly to increase my tool count in the garage but also to supplement my income before we had children. The abuse of Sears' policies by customers was unbelievable! Retired guys going to garage sales and buying bent screwdrivers and coming in for a replacement, carpenters who bought a tape measure and then came in once a month for a free replacement once the tape broke, people "buying" an electric chainsaw and returning it 2 hours later, once they cut the tree down and demanding a cash refund. It was mind boggling and all done in the name of "customer service" and look where that has gotten us as a society! No longer are we responsible for our actions as long as someone other than us will pay for them. I have a lot of Craftsman tools, most are from the 80's & 90's and have taken great care of them. Probably will hand them down one day to my son. I also have Snap On and S-K tools and have always made sure they were not abused. I bought a new Milwaukee cordless drill after Christmas and was shocked to see that it was made in China. I have other Milwaukee tools that have served me well for years that were US made and that is why I bought the drill. My father used them too for many years in the building trades and they were among the best you could buy, but now it seems they are content building them for the retail market more than the industrial and building trades. -
I saw these race at Sonoma in 2012, was impressed how they dominated the field, especially against BMWs. Not sure if I would build one but glad to see these subjects come to market. There is a huge variety of kits available to us modelers so everyone has something to build!
