Welly 72 Trans Am Finished With Tire Decals
Snake45 replied to THarrison351's topic in Diecast Corner
Is there no end to miracles? One of these showed up at my Rite Aid today. I lost no time in liberating it. Might Snake-Fu it this weekend. Boo-Yah! -
Oh I NEED one of those! That looks like the car on the Corvette calendar for June--gives me a month to find one. Meanwhile, stopped by my Rite Aid today. They had the '65 Riv in blood red, but I already have one in silver and one in blue, and am working on a model that will probably be green, so I'm pretty much Riv-ed up at the moment.

Very cool! That "wet" sound coming from your computer is many of us drooling. Do it up good!

Very clean build, and amazing paint and finish! Well done and model on!

Thanks for the clarification.

Not really, no.

You could also have gone with "Red Menace."

Is there a difference between these kits?
Snake45 replied to Hotrod 97's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
They're the same basic kit. The decals might be different. The first issue has decals for a fictitious Don Nicholson version; not sure what decals are in the Motor City reissue. -

Please don't break up your unbuilt kit for my resurrection project. It's not worth it--I can make one out of the '66 Wildcat hood. BUT, if you don't mind the time and expense of casting, I'd be happy to accept a resin copy. Don't worry about the hood ornamant--I won't be using it. -

I see what you mean about the paint texture. Still, if it were mine, I'd try to polish it a little and see what happened, then hit it with my beloved Silver Sharpie and some other Snake-Fu and set it on the shelf until the day came when I got in the mood to strip it down and completely re-do it. -

I did. So I'd have had one to share with the other guy. -

I'm pretty sure a '63 hood would work for me fine, if you're just in the mood to cast one. I don't need a '63 bumper, I got a Modelhaus one for that project. This Riv body turned out to be in worse shape than it looks in the pics. The gray primer was apparently quite hot, and the styene has a mild etch everywhere, meaning that every square millimeter of it has to be hand-sanded. And it looks like someone attacked the top with the scale equivalent of an axe, for what reason I can't imagine, but there are dozens of deep grooves and gouges in it, all of which will have to be filled. This isn't difficult work, just time-consuming and tedious. But no big deal, I've worked with MUCH worse bodies than this and they've ended up just fine. Remember, if this were easy, ANYBODY could do it. -
Outstanding in every way--a period-perfect modeling rebuild! I hereby declare you a Glue Bomb Hero! Well done and model on!

Future for Craft Acrylic Thinner/Binder?
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Which is.....? -
I'm thinking of trying to do my first model car paint job using cheap craft acrylic paint and the idea occurred to me that instead of using water or windshield washer fluid for an airbrush thinner, Future might work even better as far as adhesion, smoothness, gloss, and so forth. Or maybe a combination of Future and windshield washer fluid. Anyone ever tried this? (I do plan to cover the color with clear lacquer or enamel and rub that out.) BTW, I get to still call it Future because that's what it says on my OLD bottle of the stuff.

"Quite an old kit"? That's a NEW kit to me! I'm working on several 1967 Corvette models that were made in...1967!

That's pretty nice. I would consider just cleaning up and "rescuing" it as-is rather than rebuilding/repainting it, but it might look worse in 3D than it does in your pictures. -

Yes, I have two of them. If I wanted to go to the trouble and expense of casting a hood, I'd use one from one of the unbuilt kits I have. -

I went looking through some boxes and bags of "random parts" I've accumulated from elsewhere over the years for my '65 Riv hood. No joy, although, heartbreakingly, one of the bags had a number of custom parts from the '65 Riv kit, but no hood. But that bgd DID turn up an unexpected '66 Wildcat hood, the custom one with louvers sorta like a '67 Camaro SS on it. Hmmmm. It's both wider and longer than the Riv hood, so it could be cut down to fit, and better yet, the forward-edge "V" looks VERY similar in angle. Downside is that it doesn't have the depressions that match up with the cowl vents like the Riv hood should have, and those louver thingies, being a bit raised, make it thin right under them on the underside--almost certainly too thin to file those depressions into it. Maybe they can be filled on the underside with epoxy or something. The work would seem to be easier than trying to create a usable hood by vac-forming a Riviera kit hood. I know from experience that those depressions won't vac-form cleanly--they won't be sharp, they'll be too soft to look good. Hmmmmmmm..... Another "random part" I found was an AMT '65 Chevelle hood onto which someone has already neatly grafted a '69 Camaro cowl induction lump. I'll be finding some good use to put THAT to, I assure you! -

I've been sitting on a very restorable glue bomb '63 Riv for about 20 years now, missing only its rear bumper. Fortunately I ordered one from Modelhaus before they went OOB, and it's waiting patiently in my "last Care package" from them. Now I wish I'd ordered two. -
