Ron, got any long-stalled projects you'd like to GITTER DONE? We're maybe gearing up a Round 2 of the BOYD Completion build, with an end of March deadline. Check it out up in the Workbench section. We'd love to have you aboard for this one!

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
Snake45 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Wow, good eye! Would you believe I've never noticed this in 50 years! But I checked and you're absolutely right. Had to go back and look at my AMT '69s. They have the vertical bumper cuts as you describe. I wonder if AMT did the '68 correctly at the time, too? (I've never even seen one.) -
The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat, all on one minute or less! Let's hope the cliche "That'll buff right out" applies.... Do I smell insurance companies and/or lawyers?

Wow, could almost pass for real. Well done and model on!

Just out of curiosity, what are your other four?

+1 to all of the above. Good luck and God Bless, Gregg!

Pictures from last nights LIARS Club 01/17/2019
Snake45 replied to Superbird McMonte's topic in Model Cars
He sure did. The fit of the front bumper is a problem on all the early JoHan Javelin/AMX kits, especially right around the headlights. I spent a good deal of time trying to make it fit better on the blue one I restored a couple years ago, shown here alongside the right-out-of-the-box red one I built in 1968. I never did get it to look perfect and finally just gave up and drove on. -
Just got a "new arrivals" email from DMW with a couple 1/24 VWs I haven't seen before. Of no interest to me, but I imagine some here might be interested in them. T1 Delivery Van with Ice-Cream Trailer Pink and White "Ice-Cream Shop" die cast model by Motormax. https://www.diecastmodelswholesale.com/products.php?product=Volkswagen-T1-Delivery-Van-with-Ice%2dCream-Trailer-Pink-and-White-"Ice%2dCream-Shop"-1{47}24-Diecast-Model-Car-by-Motormax T1 Pickup Truck Purple and Cream with Surfboard, Accessories and Gray Teardrop Trailer die cast model car by Motormax. https://www.diecastmodelswholesale.com/products.php?product=Volkswagen-T1-Pickup-Truck-Purple-and-Cream-with-Surfboard%2C-Accessories-and-Gray-Teardrop-Trailer-1{47}24-Diecast-Model-Car-by-Motormax MSRP $29.00, DMW offering them for $21.99, seems like a good price for fairly nice models. They also have new Mazda Miatas from Jada that don't look too bad, but knowing Jada, I'd bet they're closer to 1/20 scale than 1/24. I'd have to see 'em in person to even consider 'em.

Agree on all counts! If you can straighten up the headlights, it'll be darn close to perfect. Model on!

Bought this one at the local toy show I think in 2017. It looked great from three feet away, and still not too bad at two. (I strongly suspect it was built by the same OB who built the '70 Monte Carlo I rescued last year.) The paint wasn't perfect, with a few dust boogers, but seemed to be solid and fixable. Its biggest problem was the roof. It had just been brush-painted flat black, and the foil trim wasn't applied very well, having that “wrinkled gum wrapper” look. It followed me home. I didn't notice at the time that it was missing both door handles and one windshield wiper. I DID notice it was missing the two left-hand taillight lenses, but thought I could make those fairly easily. It turned out the decals weren't applied all that well either (the stripe was crooked and didn't meet the lower edge of the body) so I removed them by scraping them off with a fingenail, then color-sanded out the dust boogers and polished the paint. It took me a couple of evenings to remove the foil “chrome,” picking at it with toothpicks and Xacto knife. When it was all off, I saw that the molded trim strip was in sad shape due to orange peel of the body paint, and then unevenness of the hand-brushed black, and then some adhesive residue, so I spent another couple evenings carefully scraping and sanding it all as smooth as I could get it. Then I had to sand the brush-painted black “vinyl” smooth. I masked off the body and shot the roof with one coat of Walmart Black Primer and about three coats of Krylon Satin Black, holding the can a foot or more away so the paint landed in a grainy pattern and didn't flow out. This worked pretty well and I was pleased with the results. Before I took the masking tape off the body, I laid more razor-cut strips of tape along the top edge of the trim strip, which made it MUCH easier to “chrome” the trim with my beloved Silver Sharpie. I'm pretty sure I spent more time JUST on the roof of this one—stripping, tweaking, and refinishing—as I've spent on several ENTIRE other glue bomb rescue projects. Next problem was the missing taillight lenses. You'd think all four of these would be the same, but surprise, they're all different—left and right, top and bottom. And one of the two I had on the right side was for the left, so what I had to make would be an obvious mismatch. Rather than make four news ones, I lazied out and just popped out the two I had and filled all four bezels with about four thick, flowed coats of Testor Clear Red Acryl. This looked so good that if I didn't tell you, you might not pick up on it. The eye-popping red-orange paint (I used Testor Italian Red for touchup) isn't close to any factory '68 Dodge color, and I didn't have a spare set of stock '68 Dodge wheels, so a factory stock build was out. I elected to go for a mid to late '70s High School Rod or low-buck street rat look. The nice Cragars cried out for bigger tires on the rear, so I tweaked a pair of common AMT hollow vinyl L60s to fit the Revell wheels. Which of course wouldn't fit into the stock wheels wells with jacking up the assend a little, which fit perfectly into the '70s street rat theme. I should have brought “the look” home with some extended spring shackles, but once again lazied out and just massaged the rear springs into deep arches till I got everything where I needed it to be. (I might revisit this at some point.) As usual, I did nothing else to the engine, chassis, or interior--what you see is what I started with. I finished this one up in early September, but didn't photograph or post it because I was planning to order and install door handles from Fireball before I shot it. I still need to do that. But I went ahead and shot the pics for my “2018 in Review” thread, so here it is. As with all my rescues, it's not perfect, but it fills the '68 Dart slot on my shelf until I can get around to building a good one. It is what it is—a little better than what I started with. Like many of my other Glue Bomb Rescues, it would fit right into my mythical late-'70s/early '80s car club, The Retrobates. Thanks for looking, and as always, comments welcome!

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That's four. If we get to eight, Bob, I'll be asking you to post a pic and "officially" declare, too. I'm trying to see if I have a project that qualifies. It'll have to be something that's either already painted, or won't need painting (I can't count on seeing any paint-friendly weather before the end of March), and something I started over a year ago but has been stalled for months. Hmmmmmm.... -
What non-auto model did you get today?
Snake45 replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Stopped at a seldom-visited flea market and picked up a Hasegawa 1/72 Northrop F-5A for $6. Box open but parts in sealed factory bag and yes the canopy is in there, I checked. I've already built the Matchbox and ESCI kits of this airplane, but have never built this one. Good looking airplane, should be a fun, easy build. One I walked away from was even more interesting. An absolutely NEW looking--clean, shiny, and undamaged in any way--1990 Corvette coupe promo in red, with box. Asking price only $6.50, an absolute steal. But I already built a '91 or '92 kit, just restored a '94 promo, and am about to finish up the resto of a '95 roadster, so I'm pretty well covered on C4s. I'll probably kick myself someday. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Okay, that's three. If we get to eight, Dave Branson, I'll be asking for a formal declaration with a pic of your stalled project to make it "official." -
Does this also apply to the '65 Max Wedge Cross Ram 426? The images I've found on google seem to indicate it does, but I don't want to be misreading something. (About to start working on a Polar Light '65 Coronet.)

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Okay, if we can get, say, eight modelers to post in this thread that they want to GITTER DONE on one by the end of March, I'll reopen the build for Round 2. Fair enough? As before, it has to be something you started and made significant progress on more than a year ago, but that has been "stalled" for at least a couple months--not just something that you're already currently working on. -
Came across this kit last night and opened it up for the first time. GOOD LUCK getting everything back in the box once you do! I had to find another box to put everything in. Came here looking for reviews and was surprised to find that I asked this very question two years ago. Thanks again to everyone who posted and answered, especially those who posted pics. Yes, I think this will make a fine "too cold to paint" season slump-buster! Anyone have anything new to add? (I've already seen what y'all meant about the grille being too shallowly engraved. I shall drive on regardless.)

how many models have you built?
Snake45 replied to l88 chevelle's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Okay, I went back and added a sub-list, everything I can think of that I've built but have been lost, destroyed, given away or sold, or are currently disassembled or otherwise unfit to display. That comes to 31, about a dozen of which I still have but are stripped for rebuilding or otherwise "not ready for prime time." So that puts me somewhere around 225-230 lifetime total. -
That would just be sick and wrong. But you've got me thinking....

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
My thought is, "end of the year" is too long (at this point, mid-January). No urgency, not enough motivation. Maybe run these twice a year, or quarterly? (The next deadline would be the end of March, say.) What kicked off the last one was, there were a lot of recent postings in the (very) old Bring Out Your Dead thread. It seemed like there was some currency and some interest in the topic. Let's see if there are some new postings onto that thread. (I'm hesitant to start a new one.) I'm all for it, if the interest is there. I also think it was a great help that this ran up here in the popular Workbench section, rather than down in the less-seen Group Builds section. (Special thanks to the mods for NOT moving us! ) -
This one doesn't. So, IMHO, no.

Super-clean build, what's not to like? Well done and model on!
