My copy of that kit, bought in the '80s, didn't come with the cammer, just the 429. I wanted a cammer in it so I used one from the Comet, which still had it.

Finished my list. I ended up with 136 pre-1970, and 61 '70-present or undated (such as dragsters), for a total of 197. Was pretty close with my initial estimate of 200. I have three other teenage builds that are complete and displayable and would have been counted, but I can't find them. I SHOULD have them, but they're missing in action and have been for some time (I've wanted to cleanup/restore them). I'm still hoping they'll turn up somewhere, sooner or later. -
WIX '67 Chevelle SS396--Now with Snake-Fu! 1/25/18

Slapped together an interior from a Revell pro street '67 Chevelle. Since the bucket seats aren't stock anyway, I hit 'em with Testor White Lightning "pearl" to look a bit like vintage metalflake/pearl vinyl. Looks a bit better than what it came with, dontcha think? Elsewhere, I didn't like the lower body edges. They're molded much too thick and perpendicular to the ground, or even flaring outward a little (see original pics above) and almost looked like mini-aero effects. Not good! I attacked the ride side with my BAF (10" single cut mill file) and worked it down to shape. This took the better part of two evenings. So on the left side, I knocked most of the excess off with a sanding wheel on a Dremel, which took about three minutes, and then hand-filed to final shape in less than one evening. Polished both sides up with fine sandpaper to a nice shine. I notice that some 396 '67 Chevelles had chrome rocker trim and some didn't, so it must have been optional trim. This one has 'em. -
Got this today in a trade with another board member: A started old Monogram Bugatti 35, entirely suitable for a little project I have in mind. Immediately set it together with some stuff that just happened to be on the workbench at the same time. Does this give you an idea of what I have in mind?

I've never owned any Gee Bee model kit so have no thoughts on them. If the size difference doesn't bother you, I suspect you'd enjoy the larger Lindberg/Pyro/Lifelike kit more. I have done a couple Mr. Mulligans. Built one as a kid (long gone), another as a teenager, and then picked up a clean built one at an estate sale. Here's the builtup (rear) with my teens-built one. Couple years ago I tore the latter down and rebuilt it a bit. One of the things I did was mask off the windows on the kit's odd one-piece glass unit and paint the exterior framing white. I also did away with the brace bar between the landing gear, which the real airplane didn't have, and filled the molding sinkmarks on the top of the rear fuselage and painted that area white. Looks a lot better now. (The real propeller was metal, but I achieved such a nice "wood" paintjob as a kid that I just left that.) I also have a mint unbuilt kit I'll do a really nice job on someday. I wish someone made a kit of the Howard DGA-8, an even better looking airplane. -

Just checked mine. It doesn't move either, though it seems to be a separate part. Think I'll pull it apart (I need to white-stem the headlights, anyway). UPDATE: Have now had it apart. Yup, it looks like a hinge in there but I still couldn't make it move. I might have been able to pry it loose with a screwdriver, but since there's no trunk interior anyway, why bother? (I whited the stems, buttoned it up, and it's now back on the shelf.) I never realized till I had it apart that the little vents in the side coves are not part of the body, they're red plastic!

Oh you're right--the rear deck cross-section is completely different between the '56-60 and the '61-'62. DOH! I knew that! Hey, wait--didn't YOU suggest the top from the AMT '62? (The glass for that top fits like ass anyway.) So we might be down to the top on the MPC '57/'60 kit. I'll try to take a look at that combination this afternoon.

Scott, Moebius used to sell separately the clear plastic stands from the '50s Aurora airplane kits. I bought about 10 of them and am planning to use them for "desk builds" on several vintage Aurora, Lindeberg, and Hawk airplanes. I just checked their website and couldn't find the stands listed anywhere now, but if you're interested you might contact them and ask if they still have or still offer them. As to other Lindberg airplanes, before you buy, ask me first. I can probably save you some heartache LOL. -
I still have most of my teenage builds, though not all of them are in displayable condition. Some I've cleaned up and restored; others are in need of significant repair; others I've paint-stripped for complete rebuilding but haven't gotten them done yet. I lost a bunch of models in a basement fire in late 1968, some of them really nice. Over the years I've been able to replace the AMT '66 Skylark, AMT '66 Corvette roadster, AMT Manx, AMT AWB '65 Falcon, AMT '64 Olds Cutlass, and a few others. More recently I was able to acquire a couple of glue bomb AMT '67 Camaro annuals, and last year I finally replaced the lost MPC '68 Dodge Coronet R/T with the Modelhaus resin repro. I have not actually built all of these yet, however. Two I will probably never be able to replace are the AMT '69 AMX funny car, and the Aurora "Super Spy Car" Aston Martin DB5 with all the gadgets. Oh, and the MPC '68 Impala convetible, so that's three. I have plans to do "take two" builds of some of my teenage models--in other words, build the same kit (or as close as is available today) the same way, but better. So far, I think I've only actually done one of these, the AMT '69 Chevelle. Here's the one I built in 1969 (black vinyl top), cleaned up and restored (all original paint) alongside the one I started in the early '90s and finally finished up a few years ago (white stripe).

Didn't somebody tell you that? Oh yeah, it was me. Did they come with stands? If so, I'd suggest building them gear-up and on the stands as "desk" models (Model Airplane World's equivalent of curbsides or slammers). -
All these tops were the same in real life, but they're not all the same in models. For example, I have yet to find one that will fit the "new" AMT '57 Corvette. At least not without major "tweaking." I'd imagine that the one that would come closest to fitting the Revell '58 would be the one from Revell's '62 Corvette gasser, but have never tried it so can't say for sure. If I get a chance today, I might be able to try the tops from the MPC '57/'60 and AMT '62 Vettes and see how they work.

Interesting! I've never heard this, so checked it out. The GM and Ditzler paint codes are completely different, so I don't think they're exactly the same. Marimba Red is, however the same as '64 Chevy Palomar Red. I've been thinking that Model Master Stop Light Red would be a suitable match for that, though I'll have to test to see if it's closest over white, black, gray, or "red" primer. I've been working on an AMT '64 GTO off and on for years, and am thinking of painting it this color.

'70 Chevelle kit - Revell vs. AMT

Almost certainly a 210 2-door wagon. The resin body you posted would probably be your best starting point. Looks like you'll need either the Revell Nomad or Del Ray kits to finish it. About 50 years ago I made a '55 Sedan Delivery out of an AMT '55 Nomad. I know today that this isn't particularly accurate, but it also wasn't particularly difficult. If you don't need to get real anal about your finished project, starting wit the Revell '56 Nomad would be the easiest and cheapest way to get a model on your shelf and not two people in 100 who see the finished model will know the difference. PS: Your brother looks more like James Dean or Dennis Hopper than Steve McQueen.

Okay, inspired by this thread, I started a list of my completed model cars. I found it easiest on my memory to list them by model years (1957s, 1965s, etc.) I did not count my childhood/teenage builds that are gone, nor those I still have that are in such disrepair that they are not fit to be displayed, nor those that I have stripped the paint of and are awaiting eventual rebuild. I did include teenage builds that are together enough to be displayed (and those I have already restored), adult builds, "glue bomb rescues" and restorations of others' builds, full rebuilds, and diecasts that I've Snake-Fu detailed (but not unmodified diecasts). In other words, anything I have in 1/24-25 scale that's ready and fit to be displayed. So far my list is up to model year 1969 and I'm somewhere around 130 (and only 16 of these are pre-1963). I suspect that the list for years 1970-present will be somewhere in the same neighborhood, maybe a little less. Will update when I'm finished.
