  1. Hi, Although I've had the pleasure of being helped by many here, it dawned on me that I have never formally introduced myself. This came to mind as I just joined another modeling forum and introduced myself properly. So here it goes, hello from the left coast although some of us in Cali are in there right minds I'm very new to modeling and last did a build when I was like 5 (I'm now 46.5). I Elmer Glued a Revell Corvette is all I can recall. I had a Tamiya Tyrrell 6 wheeler back then as well but some adult took it away from me, probably to build themselves. So I instead excelled in Legos as no one wanted to steal those from me. I'm a tech jok since 93' and mostly surf (as in the ocean, not internet) but am enjoying this hobby of ours immensly. At any rate, thanks to all for helping me soo much since I joined up earlier this year.
  2. Hmm, well it seems a good discussion and not so silly after all, I'm stoked. I've been shaking and swirling as well.
  3. I'll be using your build as inspiration for mine as I too have the Fuji 250 but the kit is in the blue and white colors. Although it will be a bit until I get to it. Still your build is marvelous.
  4. Cool, thanks fseva. Does an alchohal soak damage styrene?
  5. Do it man do it. Think eye of the tiger!
  6. Dude since 06', wow. It will be a decade next year, how cool would that be? Your decade long record.
  7. Ok cool, thanks JT. I'm paranoid after my first mishap on the 908. I know its a diff beast and all but still. I check the parts daily.
  8. Yep ditto to every ones comments. In terms of Tamiya and F1, I've always been curious, is it a licensing thing? Seems like the F1 kits are always more money then other type of kits. I noticed that MFH no longer does 1/20 and 1/24 Ferraris either so that may be licensing as well?
  9. Wow man, sounds uber time consuming. Still a killer endeavor. I see a patent and $$$ in your future as RC is big. I've a client were its a bunch of grown up kids basically and its RC every where from cars to flying fish to mini heli copters etc... It gets anoying when the Nerf guns go off but it beats cubicles.
  10. Hi all, I'd love to avoid a warped/meltdown scenario. Whats the safety limit in terms of soak time for styrene parts in Simple Green?
  11. Wow, that sounds cool. Are you doing this via trial and error or is there some math/previsualization involved to help speed the R&D process?
  12. Wow man. Well, if you don't wanna catagorize yourself in the pro builder class, I'd insist you at least be in the "true craftsman class". In fact I'd say 99.9% of the builds I see here are pro fo sho! I'm probably the only newbie that has posted a build lately.
  13. Hi John, What advantages in RC would a rear axle clutch give you? Seems a like an awesome endeavor.
  14. WOW! Its pretty impossible for me to comment on every ones post even though I marvel at just about all of them. But I'm curious, you obviously seem like a pro builder, is it something full or part time? How long would a build like this take you?
  15. Wow, this is my favorite Tyrrell. Very very cool man, looks awesome!
  16. Why thank you Slusher. I'm almost done with my second one, made some mistakes, albeit a different kind and I've a feeling my 3rd will be smoother. This one was tough, lotta bondo/putty work, lotta sandinging/primer work. I can see why AFX said this isn't a model to start off with. But I am soooo entirely stoked its done. I really had issues with the windows as they were of the soft kind you cut to fit. I cut em fine but through handling them, they got sorta foggy. Should I have used an acrylic floor sealer to shine em up? How does one approach these?
  17. Thanks Stephen! I made a lot of mistakes with it. The windows, seemingly easy at first did not lay down easily. Also Rit Dye didn't work at all so I used TheDetailMaster washes which seem awesome!
  18. Hmm. Then perhaps the new site doesn't support my old Safari browser on iMac any more, unlike everyplace else on the face of the Internet. I can't upgrade without spending a few hundred dollars that I don't have. If you are running 10.6, you are indeed out of luck w/Safari unfortuantly and many sites present and future. No more support or updates from crApple. I'd suggest Chrome or Firefox as they'll run on 10.6 I have 10.4, which still works with most sites. Except here. Hi, There is prolly a good reason you stayed at 10.4 but if you can run it, you can prolly run 10.6 and 10.6 can run the latest Chrome/Forefox. I can try and get you 10.6 if you like. Its not a matter of if, but when you will slowly be unable to use your browser due to site updates. One can't make a new responsive style site capatable with older browsers like what you have. Anyways, just throwing that out there as 10.6 was a pretty solid OS.
  19. Not to seem like a barney in responding to my own post, but these are the things I learend in addition to what was learned in the initial build; 1) A bad paint job only gets worse, so strip instead of fix. 2) The quality of prep and primer will show in the final coat. No exceptions, at least for me. 3) Take your time. 4) Build for yourself. 5) Reaserch this forum carefully. 6) Don't try to over do it, it's only the first build. There's plenty of time to learn which can really only be achieved through several projects.
  20. Ok ool, many thanks gents, many thanks. I know it seems like silly questions but I'd like to start with good habits early rather then break bad habits later.
  21. Well, in terms of vigorously shaking the can, Tamiyas site says to swirl the can so that the ball inside rides around the cans wall. Wondering if any one notices a difference in quality were they shook the can vigorously vs swirling it around?
  22. Ok cool. Well, I definatly see the bottoms buldging out to the point were a can couldn't lay upright. Was curious if any one else had this same thing. I'll stick to luke warm as the super hot to the touch definatly buldges the cans.
  23. The history of this car is fascinating. It was lovingly built by the Piech/Porsche family for there beloved adopted son Rex Racer, also known as Racer-X. His birth father had brutely berated him after crashing the Mach-1. Later his younger brother Speed Racer, would champion the Mach-5 but thats another story. Rex, being very distrought over his fathers behavior ran off to Germany and was embraced by the Piech/Porsche family. This car bears the #9 being Rexs number, also known as the shooting star. PS This project started out here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/102327-my-very-first-build-fisher-porsche-908-and-im-sorry/ ... where it met an almost tragic end. During the stripping process the body warped and some parts rubberized. The door and headlight seams were somewhat eaten away is if some one took a sand blaster to the poor thing. Not wanting to leave Paul Fishers wonderful kit in horrable condition I improvised. So here I happily present you the outcome, my very first build although it felt like many! PSS Since I really liked the racing-white/bright-orange combo this car initially had, I bought a Lemans Miniatures 908 to do it. I'll post a kit review hoping the community will enjoy seeing the LMM 908 offering. PSSS Finally I finished! I eagerly await your comments, tips, critisiscms etc... Humbly yours; A Beginner
  24. Hi, So I've read several posts on the importance of warming paints in general, wether spray or brush. Some even say to heat the can super hot to the touch. I've been using very warm, not hot to the touch with my cans and notced the bottoms start to bubble out. Does any one mind giving me guidance on this? I'll simply dial down the heat to luke warm and let the can soak for a bit.
