I was keeping an eye on that one but didn't bother to bid as I have one already. Love that Syd Mead style artwork on the box.

1968 Olds 442 Wheel Options
Can-Con replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Steve , Here's a couple pics of the JoHan '70 442 wheel in a small MPC tire They look pretty accurate to me if you can see beyond all the old paint. They'd need to be stripped of the old Testors paint and re-finished but I can send them along if you like. -

I'll take a couple pics and post them up for you. Honestly, I haven't looked at them in a while but they are nice. Also a touch smaller in diameter than the other 500s available. As I've said before though, my favorites are the ones in the AMT '70/'72 Chevelle SS kits. The depth of them makes them look dead on for the Olds 500s I had on my Nova. -

I bet it would be pretty easy for someone with experience making decals to do the lettering as a decal. -

I may be able to help you out with that. I have to work tomorrow but let me have a look after work. -

Missing link has the earlier caps with the Olds rocket crest in the center, if that helps. -
Looks like this will need a new body. I hope they correct the top of the rear fenders on this one while they have the chance.

Yes, definitely trim rings from the factory. My old '79 Nova had the Olds wheels. Chrome spokes, painted rim with stainless steel trim rings. -

Steve, I'd suggest the Magnums from the AMT '70 Chevelle SS kit. They have the proper depth and look great when painted properly. My '79 Nova actually had a set of SS Is on it when I got it. They had painted rims with chromed spoke section and stainless trim rings. -

"Super Stock 1" was the Magnums. SS IIs were the Olds specific rallye wheels painted silver and the SSIIIs were the same wheel painted body color. -
Hate to tell you David, but the '70 dosen't have the rallye wheels in it. It has a set of disc style wheel covers for the stock version. BUT,, it does have a set of 5 spoke mags as an option that could pass for the wheels in the pic of your old car. Sounds like you pretty well have everything you need for your build coming. We'll be watching to see how it goes.

The Magnum 500 wheels should be super easy to find David. They're the most common wheel in muscle car kits. There has to be at least a dozen kits on the market right now with them.

Duke, I tried to tell him last week to find a resin or rebuilder '68 for his conversion. But?? That resin '68 is from Star Models. cast by R+R Resins. It hasn't been on the market for over a decade. Some real old stuff pops up when you do a Google image search. And Rocketfin.com 's resin section is so out of date it probably thinks Baywatch is still on TV. LOL ?? Anyway, the hood is also 100'% different.
-
David, that's just as rare and hard to find as the '68 itself ,, possible more so. I've been trying so score one of those to fill the hole in my collection of Pontiacs for about 10 years now. But good luck hunting.
-
David, are you absolutely sure that body is 1/24 and not 1/25? Like Stu says above, it's probably and I'm 99% sure of this, it's probably based on the MPC '67 annual. I just measured my original , from tip of front fender to tip of rear fender on the ridge that runs the length of the body. Without bumpers, it measures almost exactly 22 cm. If yours does also, it's 1/25. The guy you bought it from may have told you it's 1/24 but he may not know the difference either.

A junkyard lot went on e-bay last night for 73 bucks USD. It had a '68 and '69 annual built-ups. The '68 was missing the front bumper and both needed new hoods but both looked like the rest was good. Heck of a deal for someone who likes rebuilding old kits like me. [no, I didn't get them. LOL]
-
David, Like I said in my PM with you, you're best course of action would be finding an old '68 builtup or resin and swapping the front , everything ahead of the doors and the back bumper. I know it may get a bit pricey but believe me, it really is the easiest way to go.

Metallic paint for an interior?
Can-Con replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Semi gloss is great if you want a vinyl or leather look. -
Anyone know if anyone makes RCMP decals that would be period correct for this kit?

Metallic paint for an interior?
Can-Con replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This one is from Scale Finishes. I think it's lacquer but they sell both so I'm not really sure. ,, but it doesn't craze the plastic . It wasn't clear coated this time as it has about the sheen I wanted for a vinyl look. I usually use a flat dullcoat if I want a cloth look and a semi gloss clear for a vinyl or leather look. Testors spray from the can. -
Looks really great Raoul

Metallic paint for an interior?
Can-Con replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I use metallics on interiors all the time. Sometimes I dull coat them with regular Testors dull coat bit not always, depends on the paint. Here's the last couple I did , you'll have to decide for yourself if it's the look you're going for. -

Paste toothpaste for polishing.
Can-Con replied to ewetwo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I haven't used toothpaste since my local shop started bringing in Tamiya compound over 30 years ago. I'd never go back to it. Like 8-tracks and cassette answering machines, it's had it's day.
