Plastic Spoons for testing paint?
Can-Con replied to crowe-t's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Wish I had known you 13 years ago when I sent that tip in to S.A. Bill, I wouldn't have bothered. Just burn's my biscuits that almost everyone including, I see, one of the model paint companys does it but almost no one believes that I sent the idea to the magazine and I'd never seen anyone do it before. Heck, I don't even do it unless I want to see what 2 colors look like together before I waste the paint on a body. -
Looks like it's the MPC "Tiger Shark" showcar. Hotwheels did a version and called it the "Python". I think that's what it is.

1975 Datsun 620
Can-Con replied to martinfan5's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Huh. I'm building one too. All I had to do is sand down the ends of the dash a bit so it wouldn't spread out the interior bucket and everything just slid right in place for me. -
Rick, if you need a proper set of grilles for that '71 look no further than the old MPC Dukes '69 Charger kits. Those grilles are wrong for a '69 but correct for a '71/'72. They fit right in because it's the kits they were made for. I used a set in my '72 annual rebuild.

How I spent my weekend. [February update on mt 1/1 project]
Can-Con replied to Can-Con's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Snowy day with nothing to do except work on models. but before I go start on that I thought I'd post an update on my T/A. Haven't touched it since Christmas as it's too cold out in my garage now but I had done some work on the paint before putting it away for the winter. Wet sanded it with 400 , 800 , 1000 then 2000 grit paper then buffed it out with 3M compound. Turning out pretty good but I should have done more prep on the doors before painting. There's some small waviness that's more visible now that it's shiny that I didn't see before. I'm gonna try spraying a few more coats of clear on the doors and block them out and buff then out again when it warms up. Hopefully, that will take care of it. -
I've been doing this for years too but I use sheet plastic and make them as big or small as I want and in any shape. I just glue the wet or dry sandpaper right to the plastic block with superglue.

What will I need to complete this model?
Can-Con replied to JollySipper's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
The windshield from the AMT kit "might" fit. Hard to say 100% with resin. The rear window would not fit at all, wrong roof style. If it were me, I'd find a cheep Lindberg '61 Impala or an AMT '62 BelAir and swap the whole roof section. They both have the same roof as the Olds in 1/1. That way you're pretty well guaranteed the glass will fit. Loads of work though. You could always check the fit of the glass from the Chevy kits and the windshield from the Pontiac, Heck, you might get lucky. -

BB Chevy Engine Question
Can-Con replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bill, why do you think you have to educate me on how a turbocharger works anyway? Contrary to what you might think, not everyone on this forum is an idiot. I'm one, sure , but not everyone is. I know from reading your posts over the years that you are trying to be helpful but maybe being confrontational when you try to correct someone may not be the best way to go? "Yeah, I've heard of draw-through. And blow-through. And I've designed and built and tuned them. Have you?" seemed very confrontational to me, especially the "Have you?" part. The OP asked a question about a model and I posted a couple suggestions on what was available. I'm no mechanic and I don't pretend to be, but I do know something about plastic model kits, which is, they usually don't run no matter how accurately they are built. I really think the problem here is you are talking about real turbochargers and I'm talking about little peices of plastic which are supposed to look like turbochargers and they are not the same thing. Anyway, You know you are not going to quit the forum. You've been in a lot bigger dust-ups in the past and will be in more in the future. I still consider you one of the few friends I have here so I hope you're not to P'd off. -

BB Chevy Engine Question
Can-Con replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No Bill, I don't have any knowledge on the subject whatsoever. Never had a turbo equipped car, never worked on a turbo equipped car and have only rode in one turbo equipped car and that was a Chevy Cruise. Does this mean I shouldn't have posted in this thread? If so, I apologise. I will make it a point to never post anything in any more threads past a generic "atta boy" or "good job". But I do know what came in what kit and how to look at a picture. Like I said in my last post, it looks like the Monogram kit setup is missing a pipe from the compressor to the manifold, is that right? -
Atta boy, nice work so far.

What? you guys never heard of a "draw thru" turbo setup? But, yea, the Monogram setup is missing the extra pipe that should go form the compressor [where those air cleaners are in the ends] to the manifold. http://www.dailyturismo.com/2013/04/05k-new-old-stock-martin-turbo-systems.html -

That's because I can't find any good pics of turbo'd big blocks. Would they work any different Greg? -
BB Chevy Engine Question
Can-Con replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Snake, some of the AMT modified stockers from the '70s had a BBC with a Tarantula manifold. I had a Gremlin like pictured below with one, I bet some of the others also had the same engine. -
BB Chevy Engine Question
Can-Con replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A couple I can think of off the top of my head are the MPC 3rd gen Firebirds. IIRC, all issues except the Turbo Pace Car version had this as an option. [even the Kniight Rider version.] Both are the "flow through" design instead of the "blow through" design in the 1/1 pic. And the old Monogram '56 Chevy from the late '70s with the blue car on the box. Being in 1/24, it might fit a 1/25 big block better than the MPC parts. Either way , you'll have to either modify the exhaust manifolds for the big block spacing. -
BB Chevy Engine Question
Can-Con replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, those were the days of TURBO. Turbocharging was THE hot ticket in that era and there were a lot of different kits with different designs on the market in that time period. Fuel injection or intercoolers would have been very uncommon back then, just a 4bbl carb. This kinda thing. -
Just fabulous work. I always thought those Chargers looked great in orange, especially without numbers on the doors.

Looks great Raoul.

Except , of corse for the largest mass sighting in the country with thousands of people reporting seeing a huge "V" shaped ufo on March 13 of '97.

Na, It's just whoever came up with that and posted it on facebook has no grasp on geography. Even a dumb Canuck like me knows Mount Rushmore is several hundred miles from the border. It could be taken as mildly insulting if it didn't say more to the ignorance of whoever made it up than the insult it was meant as.
