My Gurney Tribute build. Still a WiP at this moment, I'm hoping to finish it off later today while I watch the Bathurst race. Base is an AMG GT3 done up to an approximation of his '64 Reims Daytona Coupe.

I couldnt agree with this more. Every time an old kit gets a re release some people fall over themselves about how great the kit is and how many they're gonna buy. Where as I look at it and think " piece of BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH then, piece of BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH now". But that's me, and I know I dont have the same opinion as others. Which is fine. This kit, doesnt interest me that much, its cool, but its not for me. But I hope this company succeeds in their first endeavour as they plan to release new NASCAR kits to follow, which I might be interested in. And should they succeed maybe they'll add more products to their line that you will like.

With the passing of Dan Gurney I wanted to do at least one tribute car. Since I'm in love with the new Tamiya AMG GT3 kit, and I've got like seven of them already I decided I'd use one as the basis for my Tribute. And it doesnt hurt that they actually kinda look like a Daytona Coupe, so it's really not too much of a stretch that a race team could do a Tribute livery like this. For now, a couple shots. Paint is from Scale Finishes, Ford Viking Blue. Wheels and other gunmetal parts (including rear wing) are painted in Gravity Colors OZ gunmetal. Decals are from VRM and the stock AMG CF decals, tho I wont be using too many of them. Mock up shots, still more details to add before clear. Comments and criticisms welcome. Thanks for looking in.

Toy fair 2018 news and pictures.

The Ford GT, snap kit is completely different from the Le Mans GT. The GT is just the US version in Revell Germany box. The Le Mans is a full kit, new tooling of the Le Mans car, two different models. Im very much looking forward to the Le Mans car, would of been nice for them to put it out 2 years ago with the race program only having another year of life in it. But I'll take it. From the build up it looks like it has decals for at least 2 of the cars. Hopefully the others are included too. I will be building more than one for sure. -
You're right. I dont really follow F1 anymore, and yes, one team, not need for aftermarket decals unless they're just fill ins for missing decals or for another version for later in the season. I saw a video for the kit, and its got no engine. I've not built an F1 kit in a long time, and this wont be a kit for me. But I do like that we're seeing more race car kits. Variety is good.

Love it, you have me at GT40....

It's not Tamiya on pricing its the licencing. Here in Canada the Tamiya F1 kits are pretty much $80-100 now due to licencing. The last F1 kit, Red Bull one, was like $97 retail here. And I'm sure most of that was due to the licence fees. I dont mind paying more for a Tamiya kit, their engineering is great and makes it that much easier to build it into a good looking model. I almost wish they wouldnt do liveries. Just make a blank F1 "Ferrari" "McLaren" etc and let the aftermarket community take care of the different decals. Kind of whats happening with the AMG. It's the Presentation car and already there's like 20 different liveries available for that car from the cottage industry. I think this will help keet the cost of the base kit down. Sure after the kit and then decals the cost is up where it would be for a straight up manufactured kit with decals, but at least everyone wont be building the exact same car. Get my kit from the manufacturer then I can pick what livery I want, we all win cause we get to see 20 liveries instead of 20 cars the same by different builders.

Looks amazing Mike. I'd be in for at least one of each. Please make them available.

Tamiya AMG GT3-12th Annual 24hr of Daytona Group Build
Jhedir6 replied to Jhedir6's topic in WIP: Model Cars
It's finished. Finished in 23hrs and 52mins.....cut it pretty close this year. I didnt sleep the night before so I crapped out at about 4am. Car is in Under Glass section. I didnt take as many progress pics as I normally would. -
Finished in 23hrs and 52 minutes. OOB build with the addition of Powerslide Goodyear tire decals and goodies. Base is from Hiroboy (comes with a cover). Very happy with the results for a one day build. A few things not perfect, but that came down to time crunch. I've got a few more of these to do, but love this kit. So easy to build. First complete build for 2018. New Year's resolution, get more done this year than I ever have before. Thanks for looking in.

Tamiya AMG GT3-12th Annual 24hr of Daytona Group Build
Jhedir6 replied to Jhedir6's topic in WIP: Model Cars
So I ended up switching back to the Presentation car instead of the Gurney Tribute. I decided that I was going to have to do some masking and didnt want to spend the extra time on it for a 24hr build. I'll still do the Gurney car, just at a leisurely pace. So here's a few pics of my progress over the course of the race so far, they're in chronological order, although I didnt take as many as I should have along the way. Colour is from Gravity Colours, Selenite Grey Magno Grille was sprayed with some Gravity Colors Anthracite black straight onto the chrome. After setting up for about 20 mins I took a toothpick and rubbed off the ribs I wanted to be chrome. Simple, but worked like a charm. I painted the rad assembly with Vallejo Liquid Chrome and then accented it with Tamiya panel line accent (black). Wheels were painted with Gravity Anthracite black and detailed out with Goodyear decals and goodies from Powerslide. ( I know, they dont run Goodyear's on these cars, I just wanted to detail the wheels instead of leaving them plain black. I have a couple sets of the goodie sheets so I wanted to use up some of the Goodyear logos.) Decals on and car about to head off the the booth for some matte clear from Gravity. I still need to matte varnish the tire decals too. More shortly. Thanks for looking in. -
Tamiya AMG GT3-12th Annual 24hr of Daytona Group Build
Jhedir6 replied to Jhedir6's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks Shayne. So yesterday I had a brainstorm..or something similar, and decided to alter my build a little bit. I'll still be using the AMG GT3 kit but it will now be a Tribute build to Dan Gurney. I'll be using the AMG as a base for a "throw back" type livery. I'll be doing a Phantom GTLM team using a Gurney Livery in remembrance of Dan. More details a little later today. I need to get the bench cleaned off in prep for the Race/Build. Last year's even had 193 participants, this year we're at 221. So there's still time for anyone interested. More info HERE. -
Awesome. I'd buy at least one too if you offer it. Please PM me you decide to sell them. Thanks.

This Saturday, the 27th of January will be the start of the 2018 24hrs of Daytona. It's also the start of the 12th Annual 24hr Group Build. This will be my third year participating and this will be my entry Hosted on Fotki There wont be any updates till Saturday afternoon, but they'll come quick once I get going. This will be an OOB build with some tire decals added in cause the plain tires look off to me. I might add in some PE seat belts too pending on how my build progresses throughout the day/night time. If there's some extra time come morning I'll add in some extra details, if not, box stock it will be. If anyone is interested in joining, or just following along with what's being built you can log into FB and check out the thread HERE. Thanks for looking in and hope you race fans will be enjoying the race too.

Nice starts guys. I'm hoping to get a bit of time in on mine this weekend. Next weekend is a bust cause it will be the annual 24hr of Daytona FB group build. I need to get the workbench cleaned off and ready so I am going to try to get the body mods started on mine. Looking forward to more updates from everyone.
-
I know right? What were they thinking?
-
Yep. Easy. I glued the kit parts in the spots the instructions said to. I just set the HD wheels in place without the interior hub pieces. I'll glue them in place on final assembly but they're nearly a perfect fit to the rotors without the inside hub piece.
-
No update for today, too much going on but I'm off on the weekend and will push to wrap this one up. For now a mock up of the HD Monza wheels. I'll have to modify the mounting points to fit the stock suspension. Hosted on Fotki And a shot of the weak brake rotors. Very disappointing. I'm going to try and find some PE discs to cover them up since the HD wheels are more open than the stock wheels. Hosted on Fotki More tomorrow. Thanks for looking in.

The body is or can be awful. I got lucky, like I stated above, it wasnt too bad. The blue is weird, not sure why the molded it in blue, you cant even leave it, it's got some weird swirls in the colour. The detail of the kit is actually very nice. The chassis is super simple, but that's not really an issue since how often do you display your cars upside down. The wheels look bad. I've already swapped them out for a set of HD's. The kit tires are actually pretty nice tho. There's like 6 different styles on the car and they picked the worst ones imo. It's got a full engine, simple only like 6 parts but decently detailed but its 100% hidden on the finished car, they could of saved the money on tooling that and done a good job on the worst part of the kit, the brake disc. They're pathetic. The calipers looks ok, but the discs are blah. I'll post a pic up in a bit of how bad they are before I paint them. I might add some PE discs over top if I can find some left overs that fit. It's not a fabulous kit, but its decent. I paid $42 CDN shipped for mine so its in the acceptable range to me. Other's may feel different.

Thanks Benny. Mine wasnt too bad. I've heard and seen some pics of some pretty bad bodies, guess I was lucky. The panel lines are a little shallow, but not bad, I didnt scribe mine other than to clean out sanding dust. For sanding I've switched to Tamiya sanding sponges over sand paper. The sponges conform to the body and dont leave flat spots like paper can. I just scuffed it up with some 600 grit then primed. I hit the primer with some 1500 grit then painted. Pretty happy with how it came out so far. Going to get to wrapping this one up over the weekend along with my 2 AMG's I have going while I watch the Dubai 24hrs.

Another Merc arrived yesterday. This is for the 12th Annual 24hr Build (during Daytona). Gravity Colors primer/paint/clear for an OOB build tho I'll likely detail the wheels up with some decals. Hosted on Fotki

This is going to be a quick build, I hope. Revell's new Panamera, Scale Finishes Porsche Dark Blue Metallic. Decals and clear to follow later tonight after work, if I have a better night than last night. Sorry for the bad back drop, still rearranging things. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Interior will be some various shades of grey. Wheels will be from Hobby Design.

Bernard, I got my Panamera today and the body on mine doesnt seem to be as bad as some of the other pics posted. On the parking sensor, I'm not sure which year the kit is suppose to replicate but on the 2017 model that sensor you have circled isnt on the body of the real car. Just the large one on the right as seen in this pic. Hosted on Fotki So if you want to do the 2017 car, fill it in, easy fix.
