Bench cleaning
jaymcminn replied to Modelbuilder Mark's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Same here... just substitute 10 minutes for 10 seconds. I might not be the most organized modeler. -
Only change I'd make would be to add JDM fender mirrors and really mess with some people. Very cool!

I can't stand most of them. They've fallen into a familiar formula- roughly 30% working on cars and 70% shop hijinks and fake drama. The most interesting thing about most of them is the facial hair. Jay Leno' s Garage is generally very good, Wheeler Dealers is fantastic, and Seinfeld' s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is fun. I can also zone out to Garage Squad if there's nothing better on. Brian Johnson's new show is pretty fun as well...he's a genuine car guy and his enthusiasm really shows. Top Gear was the best, but Chris Evans' brief tenure as lead presenter really hurt. Maybe it'll be better with Matt LeBlanc. Can't wait for The Grand Tour.

Model car builders are cheapskates, right?
jaymcminn replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
About $185 for the 1/12 Tamiya Porsche 934. The Trumpeter 1/12 GT 40 was cheaper at about $150 but I had about another $100 in it for aftermarket tires and decals. -
The Cooper car resides locally at the Revs Institute, formerly the Collier Automotive Museum. It is breathtaking in person. Note the lack of any sort of ropes or barriers to keep you away from the cars. You can really get up close and personal with some of the most important performance cars of the last 115 years. Cant wait to see how this one turns out... great start so far!

Revell (Germany) Ferrari 250SWB! New for October
jaymcminn replied to Matt Bacon's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Of course. Now that I paid silly EBay money for the original Italeri issue... -
Fantastic build of a great little car. Well done!
-
Breathtaking. I need one of these in my life...both the 1/24 and the 1/1.

Most accurate kit(s) ever (1/24-25)?
jaymcminn replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Came here to post this. Body shape, details, stance...it's all pretty much perfect. -
There was definitely more than one roofline on these T50 coupes...the Heller 1/24 kit is based off of the same style as this one. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
-
Beautiful job on this build, Jim. Fantastic detail work. Thanks for reviving this thread, Skip...I saw the WIP thread but never did find the under glass pics.
-
I remember building one of these as a kid. I wouldn't mind having one in the stash for a rainy day project...
-
Fantastic work on what I'm sure wasn't an easy build. I've been working on the Bugatti T50 on and off for a while so I know how much work it takes to get the best out of these Heller kits. Excellent!
-
Fantastic idea. I think that this will really reinforce that long, low appearance that the chop and lowering are creating. Can't wait to see where this goes next!

Nice paint on that 250TR, It's a great kit, and I had a blast building mine. I would definitely hold off on finishing until I could score a new engine... a curbside 250TR just doesn't seem right, especially with engine work like yours! The color on the 512 is great. It's really reminiscent of a factory color called Blu California.

Very, very nice. I love a mk1 GTI and yours looks great in white... reminds me of the classic Wheeler Dealers episode! I'm still not sure why Revell didn't include the Pirelli alloys as well as the steelies, though...

Thanks, Gary. The intricacies of the UK number plate system are a complete mystery to me. I started boning up on the subject, got a splitting headache about ten minutes in, and finally just went with something from my decal stash! I might still swap it out someday- I know it should be 3 numbers and 3 letters, but sometimes the letters come first... aaagh, here comes the headache again...

Thanks all. The wire wheels are the nicely detailed plastic units from the Tamiya Jaguar Mark II. I stripped the chrome and painted the Racing Green over the bare plastic to keep the paint buildup down. The Tamiya paint came straight from the rattle can and just required some light polishing with compounds to smooth out the light orange peel. I have a Morgan and the Gunze Triumph TR3 in the stash to go with this one! It's actually not a bad kit. The parts count is pretty low but the detail is nice. It has a lot of 70s Monogram compromises in the assembly, such as crude chassis detail and lots of molded detail where separate parts would be better, but it comes together well. The hood fit is terrible out of the box- I probably put ten hours into the hood and it's only about 90% there- but overall proportions are great and it's the only game in town for an XK120!

If you could only choose ONE photo of any of your builds, wich would it be?
jaymcminn replied to JAFFA's topic in Model Cars
My Ferrari 250 California was probably my most photogenic model, and I think this is the best picture... -
Ooooh, that's a good idea...

This is Revell Germany's Jaguar XK120. The kit is a plastic-body reissue of the old Monogram metal-body kit from the late '70s. I decided to build it as a period-appropriate gentleman's toy... the sort of thing to drive to the track, thrash some punters in MGs, and motor home in after. I made several alterations to the kit- the biggest of which was to modify some Monogram Cobra seats to represent XK120c racing buckets. I raised the rear suspension by a scale 3" and lowered the front by roughly the same amount to give it a nice rake and make it look a little meaner. Wheels and tires (tyres?) are Tamiya Jaguar mkII units. Paint is Tamiya Racing White with Racing green wheels and stripe. No clear coat and polishing was done with Meguiar's Ultimate compound and polish. The roundels, flags, and country ID plaque are from a VRM decal sheet. I like the blank roundel look, but might put numbers on them at some point. I'm still contemplating installing driving lights up front, but I don't know if I want to clutter up the design. Holes for front and rear bumpers were filled with styrene rod. PE hood straps were left over from a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa detail set. External fuel filler is a parts box piece. Here the heavily-modified Cobra seats are visible. I drilled out the instrument panel for the gauges and mounted the kit decals behind clear acetate. Dark brown flocking adds a nice contrast to the weathered biscuit "leather". The kit offers a choice of right or left hand drive, as well as a choice of the "Brooklands" windscreens I used versus the standard windscreen, The aero rear- view mirror between the windscreens, a staple of XK racers, was scratchbuilt from sheet styrene and PE rivets. I'm less than thrilled with the under hood presentation... the somewhat eccentric design of the kit, with full-length side panels that go from the interior through the engine compartment, led to some gaps between the body and engine compartment sides. If I build another one, I'll cut the engine compartment sides out and mold them to the body shell. fortunately this car looks so good with the hood closed... As always, questions and comments are welcome!

Jaaaag XK120- Gentleman's Racer! Paint and Engine Update 7/26
jaymcminn replied to jaymcminn's topic in WIP: Model Cars
As promised, here are some pics of the Jag finished except for last-minute decals... Here's a good shot of the interior. Notice the scratchbuilt aero rear-view mirror between the windscreens. If my decals ever come (hurry up, VRM!) I'm going with black roundels and white numbers. Or yellow roundels and black numbers. Still trying to decide... Under Glass shots are probably going to have to take place outdoors, as it is impossible for me to get the lighting right with my indoor setup to get the colors correct and fixing it in Photoshop leads to all sorts of weird artifacts. -
Yet another paint question re: clear coats
jaymcminn replied to Roadrunner's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and Polish are your friends here. No residue, no silicon, and they bring out an amazing shine. Since learning to work with these products my finishes have improved and I don't even need to use the old Micro-Mark polishing cloths anymore! -
Jaaaag XK120- Gentleman's Racer! Paint and Engine Update 7/26
jaymcminn replied to jaymcminn's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Can't wait to see them. The Jag is done and looking pretty nice... just waiting for roundel decals from VRM to complete it before going to Under Glass. Might have to take some "pre-roundel" pics tomorrow and post them up here. Looking forward to your build!
