Builders Slump
Rocking Rodney Rat replied to Rich Chernosky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm in a pretty big slump right now, pecking away unenthusiastically at my current project. I just put it away in a box. I don't fight it. Have I built everything I want to build? A kitchen remodel starts tomorrow with cabinet delivery. The guys will want to use the garage (my workshop) to setup their (as it rains pretty much every afternoon this time of year), saws (etc) so it will be a big mess of sawdust and whatnot for the next few weeks. Good timing I guess. Heading to Home Depot to buy some dropcloths to cover everything in the garage....expensive fun n games... -RRR -

I'm not going to show you a picture of my workbench. I work in a disaster zone....it's always been that way, not sure why. I'm not a messy person in any other aspect of my life. Seems to work for me, so I'm off to the bench (where I hope I can find that part that just skipped town last night).... -RRR

Pre-building
Rocking Rodney Rat replied to Sidney Schwartz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I sometimes make the hole bigger than the pin so I have a little 'wiggle room'.... As far as pre-building, every part is carefully removed from the sprue, attach points are cleaned up, mold lines removed, light sanding to ensure paint adhesion and yes, lots of mocking up with the above items, blu-tack or white gloo. Final sanding with 800 to 1000 grit paper, a good hot soapy wash, dry and primer all parts, sand primered large parts (body, etc.) more washing, spray color and clear. And then I make sure I get super-glued fingers on a few key painted parts...it's all part of the fun... -RRR -

I got the rear suspension dialed in. Coil springs from the Revel Model A series will be cut down and added in, once I figure out the ride height. Ladder bars from one of the AMT AWB cars.... -RRR
-
I removed all of the modern style bracing and transmission mount, filled in the notches and filled in the numerous sink marks...I added the trans mount from the Revell Model A series... ----------------- I added some bracing and started mocking up the rear suspension.... More later.... -RRR

This build is influenced and based on a Jeff Allison illustration used by the Billetproof show several years ago. The design was used on a show T-shirt: --------------- Here's the "yard sale" of parts pulled for the build. The body is the new tool Revell '32 body, frame from a pre-painted version of the AMT Phantom Vickie [sic] kit. Cammer is from the MPC Malco Gasser Mustang, with wheels and tires form a Polar Lights funny car kit. Various other components are sourced from the parts box. ---------------------- The first order of business was to strip and clean up the frame. I used the interior door panels from the Rat Roaster, covered with thin Evergreen styrene pieces. The floor pan is from the Revell '32 five window coop with the rear panel cut off. The other floor pan is from the Vickie kit. ------------------------------- I mated the back part of the Vickie floor pan to the 5 window pan like so.... -------------------------- A bit of grinding out the center section of the Vickie pan and a schmear or two of putty...... --------------------------- Firewall will be recessed, cammer will have a healthy set-back, perhaps a notch in the cowl to allow room for the blower scoop.... Thanks for looking, more to follow... -RRR
