Wrinkled Paint - What Happened?
89AKurt replied to andy12646's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'll study this thread later.... but when I need this texture for Ferrari cam covers or such, this would be a trick if it can be controlled. -
I owned this 1969 Chevrolet C-10, got from a friend who needed the money, died last year, nephew bought it because it was sold new in Safford (still had the service plate with the manual) to a relative. It grew on me, found out why they are very coveted, much like the model kits! ? I nicknamed it The Green Barge because a friend owned a nice motorcycle named The Green Monster. Currently own a 1968 C-10, so can use for reference (which is the same blue this model was painted). Going to build for a future diorama idea, so not going to scratch-build an accurate chassis, but will grind off the left exhaust to replicate this truck (I wanted to put on twice pipes). Bought off Facebook Marketplace, it was built half decent, seller had stripped the body, I'm stripping and rebuilding the rest. The plan is to improve some things, and modify to resemble the trim specifications. The interior is going to be a major scratch-build: cut out the bucket seats and make a bench seat from Corian, dash will get gauges behind 'glass' (minus little auxiliary ones), add shift lever and turn signal, pedals, door panels were steel with simple arm rest. Exterior will have the upper trim removed, the raised wood grain needs to be removed from the lower trim, tailgate will be a major change, drill stakebed holes, modify the front bumper, sidelights need to be basic, and fix the horrible taillights. Scratch-build: the license plates, rear bumper, mirrors, toolbox, steps, driving lights (which came off my MINI). Aftermarket details: gauge faces, slotted mags, and the big deal item is the '69 grill! I took reference pictures with the tape measure in the picture when I sold it, will post them as I get to those parts. Start off with these photos to give an idea. Hauling flagstone: Hauling mountain bike: Replaced the perfectly bumper that I snagged on the fence post: Day that I said goodbye: Most of the parts, instructions with notes: The rest of the parts: Cleaning up parts of mold lines, and starting assembly. Puttying the massive ejection pin marks. Going to order Splash paint per paint chart, 503. The original owner had it repainted, including the interior! When I replaced the left headlight, discovered why. ?

Does this make over 30 on the bench now? ? No battery terminal clamps on that photo-etch? You going to use the wheel arch and window trim too? ? The hood a test shot, looks awesome. Power on my man!

Where to go sell off some of my kits?
89AKurt replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you can stomach Facebook, there are several model "Marketplace" groups. The Admins tend to keep out ripoff artists. FB even offers a way to pay, but I'm leery of spreading such information around. I've acquired several kits via this source. I'm also not adverse to eBay. Will PM you. -
First car is pretty awesome. Cool setting too.

I'm amazed what some have done with glue bombs, when the kit has not been available for a long time, and people pay big bucks on eVilbay for them. I'm keeping that in mind now as I dig out of the hole. I will say that Tamiya primer is impressing me! Brake fluid didn't do much, needed to wet-sand. Took another step back breaking the windshield frame, I'm sure many got broken in the box at this point, the silver plastic has the swirl meeting point there. Gouged a groove, superglued in wire. Can fine tune bend and screw with this for awhile, later.

Came out nice! What gold paint are you using? I've never been satisfied with Testors, the Alclad gold for Lexan r/c bodies isn't much better, I want better.

I built this last century, when it was new! It's the only big truck I've built, modified a Chevy van for the cab. I painted the suspension different colors, like illustrations showing the different components. For some reason the cab got wasted, I have most of the chassis parts in the junkyard. I recall that it was a fun build.- 41 replies

Another reason regarding wire wheels, use flat photo-etch or kit wheels. In this case stayed with plastic wire wheels. I'll fake it until I make it. Thanks. Good answer below. Thanks for the answer, wasn't sure how to answer it anyway. ? I went to the auto paint store and got high quality "slow" lacquer thinner just for using with nail 'polish', but also use it for all the other enamels. No worries posting the picture, that looks fabulous! Between you and Duke, I have to step up my game! Started the brake fluid remediation task. ? Posting pictures would be like rubber-necking a wreck on the highway.

Never heard of UT Models. That's really cool! Well done.

Determined to not abandon this project. ? Worked on microscopic details that could be overlooked, but I think adds to the overall picture. Detail Master battery hardware, wire salvaged from electronics, aluminum plate, guitar string. I know the red wire isn't proper ? but adds interest. The hold down must be a box frame, but the short sides are smaller than the long side which is the aluminum bent to an angle, so a faked it. ? Radiator drain petcock is aluminum that is bent.

You say that only because it's not flaming RED. ? I'm happy with the color, but since I'm going to start over, could use a little less black to the mix. Good thing I got a big bottle. ? That almost looks brown, like the Testors brown metallic. Wanted to successfully get something done today, so put together the Fujimi Daytona tire/wheels together. One of the center pieces needed flashing cleaned off, scraped and sanded down the minimal ejection pin marks, sanded the tread a tad, clamped each step just to ensure all is well. Took some shoulda-coulda-woulda pictures.

andrews_544@hotmail.com That's what I kept with the parts. ?

Oh kill me now.... this is why I prefer doing beaters, I *could* change course and make this a barn find after doing this. ? The trick with spraying nail 'polish' is using more than the normal amount of thinner, and flooding it on just enough to lay evenly. But when you do just a little too much, it crazes and wastes time. ? Also wiped some globs done on the first pass, which took away the base color and resulted in another ?. But am happy with the color! One reason I like nail 'polish' is the scale pearl/metallic, hard to tell in photographs. Anyway, if you blur your vision, it looks okay. But think this is going to get thrown into brake fluid and start over, no point sanding. Climbed onto the pickup to take pictures on the roof because the sun has gone down. ? Screw up on the fender. Crazing: On the hood, not direct sunlight: Taken with the flash: So close. ?

I wouldn't mind doing this, but have to hold myself back from everything that is desirable, especially modern cars. Great choice of details, love those money pits. Pulling up a chair to cheer you on! Someone in my town owns this one, among other nice cars.
-
Oh no, even I won't do a RED interior! ? I find it amusing every car has black armrests, everything else such as parking brake boots are matching colors.
-
I know right? ? Just needs some white spear pin striping. Would look good on your Invader. ?
