Thanks. Casting thickness was always an issue - but the castings were less likely to warp - and the caster got better mold life and was able to pull more castings from a mold - as commercial resins got better - casters like Harold Bradford and good friend and mentor Norman Veber - figured out how to produce parts without the out of scale thickness - as did Paul Fisher - on the left coast - which is why these three are in my resin casting “hall of fame”.

The earliest Columbo 12’s were made in ‘47 and ‘48. Forza and Cavallino have both featured excellent articles on the Barchetta and the Spyder Corsa. These two cars used the early tipo 166 engines …. The sumps were made of magnesium - they were hammered from sheet by burley (?) workshop apprentices using hammers and probably wood forms - and every sump was a little different- the sump on 0010 was finned - and ran the full length of the block - the UMI casting - I think this was done by Quarterman - gets this feature correct. - I’m going for a more precise part - using some Evergreen railroad car sheet siding - and the .2 Tamiya scribes - same as the door gaps on the Barchetta … then building the part up with strips of Evergreen …part in photo one contrasts with the GTO sump - made 12 years later …

Here’s a neat discovery …. Years ago there was A Ferrari magazine publication called Ferrari Story - I don’t think it was published very long - I’ve got about a half dozen issues - they published a great series on the earliest Ferraris - including early chassis drawings from Gilco - they designed and made the early chassis - this drawing has the dimensions of the chassis tubes - don’t think I’ll use this for the UMI Barchetta - but it might come in handy in some Other early Ferrari projects that are percolating …

Exhaust pipes. Very nice. Is that alclad. Or what ?

This shot shows how much better the Reps and Mins GTO block is …. Mite be able to use the cyl head casting on the UMI part - but I’ll have to remove and replace the cam covers … and this shot shows the diff between the GTO sump and the UMI part - which tries but fails to represent the early V12 sumps …
-
Also notice that the magneto is different and the spark plugs are located along the inside of the cams rather than on the outside …
-
Here’s a better shot of the Columbo 12 in the Barchetta …. Notice the absence of ribs on the cam cover - one change from the GTO engine - but there are other changes at the base of the engine ..

I told you the Reps and Minis GTO Engine was Really good …. So I’ll use the parts of that kit - and the measurements of these castings - to make an early Columbo V12 - as used on the Barchetta and the early Ferrari open wheelers …

If you have a look at the UMI kit body on the Barchetta thread in the Other Racing WIP section - it is quite good - and the kit has great decals and very useful photo-etch and very nice white metal parts - but The bits for the engine - not so good …

now close your eyes and picture a "garden variety" Ferrari GTO engine which has been kitted / offered many times over the years in 24th scale. None better than the Replicas and Miniatures GTO engine - which has been available now for thirty years - I think Randy Ditton can get you one - he may have some for sale on his site - either Harold Bradford or Norman Veber still make them - when they have time ! this kit is by far the best offering in the scale - there will some day be a 3D printed GTO engine kit - I doubt that it will beat this old fashioned resin offering ... don't open your eyes yet [how are you reading this?] you will notice that there are several differences between the early V12 found in the early Ferraris - and the GTO engine - so that is what I am messing around with ...

this is a shot of the engine published by Sports Car Digest - with - or without - there permission - but with a plug - great site ... this is the display engine in the Jon Shirley Collection - that family is the lucky owners of the Spa Winning Barchetta that I will build from the Umi kit ... the kit includes a fairly detailed engine bay, but ...

2 cars but same engine ... this is an early Columbo V12 the photo in the sports car eng bay is from the Spa winning Ferrari Barchetta that I am building in the Other Racing WIP section - an Umi kit that I am building as a tribute to the late Mike Quarterman - he produced this kit in 1993 ... the other photo is of the Collier family owned 166 that is displayed at the Rev's Museum in Naples this photo was taken at an Amelia event a few years ago ... It is one of the first Ferraris - and was built about a year before the Barchetta.

That’s SO not fair !!!

Should probably do some more work on the Vanwall engine - but I’ve got Ferraris on my brain … maybe I should just lie down to see if this passes …

Oh dear …. -
If you’re loading pix fr your I phone. - give them a “spin” on the editing app - which will give them correct orientation on the thread - which is what I forgot to do on the first trunk shot above …the fourth shot is the obligatory “glued the model to my fingeR tip shot”. That’s always fun …

Gonna put all the …. Junk in the trunk …. But first I have to recover the shut lines on the trunk lid with a strip of Evergreen and lots of CA glue …. And filling the one casting cavity that I found along the lower edges of the body casting …

Very nice -
Sanding. Filing. Scribing. Just removing all the excess resin so that the base looks like the master … leave the UMI markings under the base of the trunk, right ??

The base plate has a few features - pretty basic - the kit was designed as a semi curbside with engine compartment detail but not much else - the frame rails should widen from front to back - these do not - the thickness of the base plate makes it impractical to add detail - so I’ll just clean things up and add one or two features - like the leaf springs -
