Stupid things we do.
robertw replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've done your first goof and what is worse, a couple of times (I'm a slow learner). The first time I was able to sand the offending white paint off because the model already had a couple of clear coats on it but the second time I had to strip and start the whole project again. -
Now you can build the ultimate "glue bomb" that no one will ever be able to disassemble.

New Nissan/Mistubishi Kei Car

I hope it does become a Fujimi box art. I enjoy building these small compact and micro cars and Fujimi is one of the few model companies doing them in plastic. -

One man display at an outside car event. You've done the hobby proud. Well done. -
Getting My Fix, Store or E-bay ?
robertw replied to Chris White's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Over the years, ie before shipping costs went ballistic, I would buy where ever I could find what I wanted. Besides shipping costs which are what drove me away from ebay the couple of online shops for old kits that I frequently checked on have closed leaving only LHS as a source of supplies. Fortunately in those "pre-ballistic days" I bought far more kits then I'll ever build so my few kit needs are easily taken care of by the LHS. The only stuff I order online for anymore is the aftermarket stuff. Despite this when I travel I should have a bumper sticker on the car that states, 'This Vehicle Stops For All Hobby Shops'. -
How big is your work table ?
robertw replied to Fender's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No matter how big it is it will never be big enough. -
Many....many but like models I don't want to really know how many I have, but I have excuses: -the nearest hobby shop is 150 miles away so never want to be caught without the paint or model that I decide I need at the moment -I love the Tamiya synthetic lacquers and at times they can be in short supply -I live in fear that the wacky enviros will one day get their way and have all but acrylic paint banned as toxic so I'm keeping a good supply in the bunker

Rattle Cans - who still uses them?
robertw replied to tiking's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Both airbrush and rattle cans and will sometimes decant the rattle can to use it in the airbrush, whatever I think will work best for the given project is what I'll do. -
Promotionals , Anyone collect Vintage promos
robertw replied to gtx6970's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I collect Corvette promos but can't afford the ones prior to the mid '70's. The prices on the early ones are often outrageous. I also don't have the normal distaste for curbsides that many modelers have so have bought lots of C4 -C6 Vette promos for the purpose of re-building. -
Nice work. The color is a different but logical choice for a Ferrari and the c/f work really adds to the model. It puts the F430 on my shelf to shame, well done.

Very, very nice clean build and one wouldn't think it but it looks great in that colour combination.

Model car box top art MEGATHREAD
robertw replied to Stef's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If AMT '89 ZR-1 kits are that rare then its time to sell the four in my stash and retire. I think you may have the story between kits & promos mixed up. About 3000 '89 ZR-1 promos were produced then recalled and destroyed, it is thought that about 50 survived and no I don't have one only wish I did. BTW the '89 ZR-1 kit carried a stock number of 6277 and the '90 one carried a large sticker on the box that said 1990 and its stock number was 6073. -
Looks good and I love the colour, that blue almost makes the 1 to1 car look attractive.

Built this kit a couple of years back and had some unexpected problems, although none that couldn't be corrected. The biggest problem I had was fit issues between the inner doors and the front fender liners but since both are vinyl some cutting and bending solved the problem. I also found that the dash didn't fit well but by cutting some small wedges out of each side of the dash and the fender liners I got it to fit. I also ended up redoing the bumbers in Alclad because of the heavy spue stubs, sink holes and poor chrome. Build carefully and dry fit often and you should have a sucessful build. Most modellers build the Tamiya coupe so it's nice to be able to build this kit and have the conv or coupe.
-
I'm glad you're doing the conv kit so that the excellence of your work will clearly be on display. The amount of work that you've already put into this kit is already beyond what most of us do so I can't wait to see what you finally produce in the end it is going to be awsome.

Sharp build of a seldom modelled car. I like the choice of color. I built the Italeri model of the 944 Cabrio earlier this year so I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one to build a model of this sports car.
-
Very well built. I built this kit a couple of years ago so know what you went though to get to the point where it looks as good as your photos show. By the time I was done I had a pile of putty dust big enough to start another car. Since building it I've also done the PL Batmobile and the scale difference is really obvious. I wish PL would use their Batmobile mold to produce the original Futura but that is not likely to happen. Again, an excellent build from a seldom built model.

Picked up that model a couple of years back simply because it looked so different. Was planning to do it in a color close to what seems to be the most common color but your darker blue looks a lot better. I look forward to seeing it finished.

Mel "the Velvet Fog" Torme the jazz and big band singer during the 40's - 80's was apparently into model building and collecting. I read once that he was a regular customer of the legendary Polk's Hobby Shop in New York. -

mom and pop vs. big hobby shop
robertw replied to Q tip's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I love the LHS, any LHS! When I go to a new city the first thing I check is the phone book looking for what shops may exist there, whether they be mom & pop style or big box Hobby Lobby style. If I meet staff who are friendly and plastic knowledgeable that is just icing on the cake and a guarantee that I'll walk out with stuff that I might otherwise not purchased. As the old idea of hardware or hunting/fishing stores being a place for men to just wander around in, so a hobby shop is like catnip to me. One of my favorite shops has recently been going through changes, reduced selection of kits, the departure of the plastic guy from the staff and new staff who are more interested in r/c, correspondingly my interest in visiting it is decreasing slightly. While I certainly buy on the internet to get a lot of the stuff that local shops won't carry, p/e, decals etc. or rare or unusual kits the LHS will remain my favorite place to look for the stuff of our hobby and since it is the smaller shops that will usually have employees that have an interest in the customer I guess it will be the mom & pop style shops that I like to visit the most even if the prices are a little higher. -
If Magnum had driven this 308 the show wouldn't have lasted the first year.
