new kit just got today!
Jeff Johnston replied to Poncho-Power's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow there is a kit I have not seen in years. I can't remember ever building that one.... I wonder how it builds up. -
Anniversarys
Jeff Johnston replied to Corvette.Jeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
17 years this past August. -
Mike yeah that was mine. I am glad you liked it. 2 years ago Steve Salhany from Maine had a dark maroon one on the table which inspired me to build mine. So classic plastic must be the place to see stock STS Caddys' lol I thought Pete Wisniewski was building one too but I don't think he finished it.

Very cool... I did the same thing with mine except its blue. Nice work.

Model photography setup
Jeff Johnston replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I bought a Fuji with a manual F-stop, andF8 is as far as I can go... I was somewhat disappointed but could not justify the $$ for an SLR to take pics of models I ended up backing up, and setting the digital zoom and also actually zooming in a little. This seems to work for me, though I wish I could set the F stop higher to get perfect clarity front to back. I still have my Vivitar SLR that I bought in the 80s. Not sure why I still have it though LOL. -

Model photography setup
Jeff Johnston replied to Jon Cole's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here is what I use Jon. Cardboard box, tissue paper and lights. All said under 20 bucks at Wallyworld, including the lights. About 3 bucks if you already have the lights. -
I love it...it has that sitting in the dealer parking lot look to it... They weren't all Yanko's and Z/28's back in the day... I like this one...

wow nice. I always liked the long nosed front ended Ferrari's. Nice job on that one. I built that one years ago... I saw a "real" one driving up the Merrit Parkway in CT a few weeks ago and it reminded me how beautiful these cars were.

Thanks guys. Mark definitely off the path for sure...way off. I used the 2004 and 2006 Fujimi kits for the body and interior. The 2006 had a way better interior from a detail perspective than did the 2004. Then I used the wheels and the wing from the Tamiya Rally car kit. Now back to old muscle cars :-)

I used 3 kits and printed my own decals to replicate my friends awesome Sti.

69 RT CHARGER - MADE IN BRAZIL - FINISHED
Jeff Johnston replied to uelder valongo's topic in Model Cars
WHOAH...I think I just drooled on my keyboard. I have to say when I saw the first pic I had to look twice because it looked like a real car. -
this was a quick weekend build just for fun and because I wanted one on my shelf. I didn't even detail the chassis. I saw that transferomer movie with my kids and they had a goldish color on in the movie...and the next thing you know I am at Michael's with me 50% off coupon picking up this kit. I used decals from the 70 Chevelle on the hood since the stickers don't exactly work (or fit).

Scary Jerry's Pig Roaster- Better Pictures
Jeff Johnston replied to Chuck Most's topic in Model Cars
I really like that .. great imagination -
Thank you for the tip Peter. It's true that the door panel looks thick as a Sherman tank in scale I'll definitely do that next time. I never noticed it until you pointed it out, and you are so correct...the trick will be for me to not grind too far LOL. I appreciate the feedback, as I'm always trying to do just a little bit better on the next one (which will be a sprint OHC 68 Firebird..)
-
LOL Harry I saw that when I took the pics... Its amazing what the camera will show that my eyes can't see. I opened the door panels myself, and the trunk lid is already kind of open on that kit.

Finished this one recently. AMT lit painted MCW Lime Gold.

Fox Chassis (Ford) community build anyone?
Jeff Johnston replied to whale392's topic in Community Builds
Slow but sure I am making progress. I'll make the deadline but have a few other projects I have to finish before I focus totally on this one. -
not much...I pained a few more parts and tonight I hope to prime ad paint the wing. Thanks for asking. I'll have some more pics sometime this weekend.

Some more progress replicating my friends Subaru. Home Made carbon fiber decals. Interior with Diamond plate floors like the 1:1 car.. (his anyway). Close up theg flocking looks real fuzzy but to the eye (not zoomed on macro lol) it looks good.

spray can paint alternatives
Jeff Johnston replied to Builderbob228's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I swear by Plastikote primer...you cans usually find it in non chain automotive parts places. I like their spray cans if I am not going to airbrush. Duplicolor has a better spray nozzle but goes on really HOT....you have to go so light with Duplicolor in my experience. Tamiya sprays are the best though...I also like the Testors lacquers in solid.l The metallics are too flaky (think almost bass boat lol) But I think regardless of the color, I get the best results with Plastikote primers. -
I was exactly where you are 10 years ago. I built as a kid and as an adult. then I met a girl, married her and had a couple kids...as soon as I met my wife I stopped building for about 8 years ... Mostly because girls are one of the few things I enjoyed playing with more than model cars LOL Then I bought a mustang and decided I;d do a model of it. The rest is history. some new things I learned right away once I got back into it. Lacquer spray paints work sooo much better than the old Testors enamel. I assume the paint you bought was lacquer, but if it wasn't, get some lacquer and come clear coat. I swear by Testors "Acryl" paint for my brush painting of solid colors. Black, Red, Blue, etc. It dries fast with no brush strokes. The metallics and silvers don't cover well but the solids do. Bare Metal Foil...I never used it before I started up again. I live the stuff - both chrome and aluminum. The other thing that really struck my when I got back into it was the paint jobs in general. I thought I painted pretty well, until I went to a local show. WOW...did I ever get an eye opener. Then I learned about paint polishing using the micro mesh polishing cloths and about using model wax like Novus. This was the single most satisfying step in my newly discovered hobby...what a difference it makes. Anyone on here can elaborate if your interested, but suffice to say if you paint with a lacquer base coat with a good clear coat...and you polish (sand) and wax the clear, you;ll get a mirror finish. Lots of f#11 blades and sandpaper. I use Wal Mart super glue (the stuff for a buck). It dries cast but not too fast. JJ

Jon I paid 149 for my Tom Tom at Wal-Mart and I really like it. My Dad bought a refurb Magellan on line (Amazon I think) for 99 and its pretty nice too. I have had the Tom tom take me to the wrong place once but I was close. They might be a little cheaper now (mine is a couple years old now) and I am very happy with it. JJ

How many BUILT models do you own?
Jeff Johnston replied to Jeff Sauber's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
maybe 25 on display...I sell off many of mine too. I love to build but after a while I gert tired of looking at hte same kits so I ebay them off and that gives me pal pal $$ top buy more stuff. I have maybe 3 models I will never ever part with. One if a 67 Galaxie Albert Wallace sent me to build after I did some painting for him... One is a Pantera painted Pantera Orange...My uncle owned one just like it when I was a kid the last is as Bandai 1.20 Fiat X 1/9 thats done up just like my first car.
