That's excellent, even without having seen one of these kits for real I can imagine the challenge it would have been to put it together - it's worked out very well.

Nice haul Tom! I got these in the post: I hadn't seen one of these before, from an initial glance it appears to look decent, the roofline looks nicer than the Monogram Camaro I'm familiar with. Got this for a good price, I think it's a reissue of the old Monogram kit? Has the louvred side panels and glass alternatives. Don't like this box style much, no ability to use it for storage of parts as the kit gets detailed and assembled. Not too much difference between this and the Fujimi R31 bodyshell, but the Hasegawa kit has much more accurate chassis and suspension. I don't have much interest in building this as a rally car, maybe Time Attack style instead?

Ferrari basically finished, just needs a bit tidying before I take some daylight photos, and the Datsun Z is ready for completion tomorrow: Toyota at the back has been on a bit of a 'journey', after polishing through the front end I resprayed that area but the match wasn't great. I redid all of the green and have since given it a healthy amount of of Tamiya TS-13 clearcoat to avoid any future issue. The Ferrari was a WIP for 12 years. Some of the other ones I've recently finished were the Datsun Fairlady at 13 years, Maserati V8 over 25 years and the Corvette nearly 30 years, so in the last two weeks or so I've wrapped-up nearly 80 years' worth of WIP. I now have some clear space on the bench, so I can think about what's next: Off the shelf and onto the bench. I haven't done anything from AMT for a while, and I've got an idea in mind for this one fitted with the Thunderbird's V6......

Excellent work, looks very realistic.

Great to see another one of these on here, after ItalianHorses recently completed one. Nice work, it looks really good.

Wow, quite a lot of work and thought going into such a small car. Are you confident your masking tape will peel off the fenders after a while without leaving any residue?
-
Just the way I'd like it in real life. Admittedly any Corvette is making a bit of a statement, but I like the hidden potential of this one, hopefully those wide tyres would get it around the corners too. Thanks Glenn ?

Thanks Bob and David. Thanks Tom, it's certainly a nice kit and one I'm certainly pleased to see done at last!
-
Thanks Larry. Thank you Roger, I had the look in my mind for a long while. You got them in the States, I think just called Roadster 1600 or 2000 and I believe they raced them in SCCA classes.

Good luck, great progress so far.

Looks like you've had a battle with this one! Keep persevering with it, what you've done so far looks good and it will be worth it. It's tricky when a kit is designed and engineered in such a way that you can't easily trial fit everything until you have a load of assembled components. I've a horrible feeling I'm going to encounter the same thing on a project I want to start next.....

Great to see you continuing with this amazing attention to detail. I was thinking of this project earlier today as I messed around adding column stalks to a plain bit of rod to come up with something resembling a steering column on one of my builds - not even 1% of what you'd do, but in the past I probably wouldn't have bothered at all.

Monogram Datsun 280Z holiday project
Spottedlaurel replied to Spottedlaurel's topic in WIP: Model Cars
He certainly did, here he is with a 280ZX he raced for a while: Datsun 280ZX Saloon Stock Car - Horry Barnes, Foxhall 1990s? by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr I saw him race many times over the years. He ran a Volvo 300-series for a while, but he ended up back in a Datsun again. Thanks Mattias, it's been a fun way to do this for a change and not have to worry about polishing! Thank you Martin. I have some others in the stash to try out different ideas. I've seen one or two customs in old copies of Street Machine and Custom Car, perhaps one of them could go that way? -
I enjoyed seeing it come thogether on your WIP thread, the finished result looks great!

Thanks everyone for the very kind words! I love the process of choosing wheels, colour and the overall look of a project, it's very satisfying when it works out.

Looks excellent, very purposeful. Looking back at the first few images and then seeing it now your concept has worked out really well.

Monogram Datsun 280Z holiday project
Spottedlaurel replied to Spottedlaurel's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks, and you've heard of Horry Barnes?! The British Racing Green colour would certainly be good for one of his cars, and I don't know what else to use it on.... -
Thanks everyone, I enjoyed building it with a bit more of a challenge due to the engine conversion and the bodywork polishing.

Monogram Datsun 280Z holiday project
Spottedlaurel replied to Spottedlaurel's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I had been hoping to get this one finished today, that may not happen but I'll be pretty close..... Over the last week or so lots of this has been happening: 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Which has certainly improved my masking skills. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr This being the result. I lost some of the Ochre paint on the RH wing, so that had to be redone - as a genuine period Datsun colour I was determined to have it on there. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr I paid a bit of attention to the fitment of the nosecone, adding a small offcut of styrene into this gap and attaching a tab behind it so it can be firmly glued together. The nose has since been sprayed red, a common colour on Zs here. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr A quick bit of silver dabbed around the shiny black vinyl interior, with US brochure reference material. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Fitting the different steering wheel required me to find a column. As I'd drilled out a little pin to attach the wheel I thought I'd have a go at adding something that vaguely resembled the column stalks. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr This is what I have left to detail and fit. Door mirrors are from the parts box, possible ex-Corvette America, and an interior mirror has been sourced from a Tamiya BMW. Oil cooler will be mounted externally on the nose, leftover from the Datsun Fairlady Roadster I finished the other day. 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1:24 Monogram Datsun 280Z kit by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr BMF to add around the door tops, arch flares and spoiler to be attached. Nearly there..... -
Nice. I've built the standard NSX, one of the best kits I think ever put together - the detailing is so delicate.

That's excellent, the concept has worked really well and it looks fantastic.
