  1. Thanks Dave. So the color is resolved
  2. Thanks Gary, you always come through with your mega database. I already had pics 2-3 from xked.com and they are definitely from the restored car. Your first picture answers the question for me as it a period pic from LeMans. Looks like Jaguar Opalescent Blue. I like it much more than the restored car color.
  3. I agree guys, definitely more Tamiya in my future. But for now I just started taking on Revell's newly tooled Jaguar E-type and it also is very good. On this one though I can't leave it alone and making some changes to turn it into a race car.
  4. What...a Cobra. You keep surprising me Ray! Seriously, looks like a good kit and a nice build so far.
  5. Racing sports cars site listed the car as green but I believe other sources listed it as dark blue. The car was restored with a blue shade (see pic below) but I can't say if it is the correct shade of blue. Some research still needed to nail the color. Andy, can you post pics from Andrew White's book? Thanks.
  6. A new project begins. Look forward to your updates sir.
  7. I did not expect this thread would generate so much interest (60 responses so far) since posting 3 days ago. Beautiful to see such passion. No matter how big or small the stash, it's the passion for the hobby that is the common thread I love seeing the pictures of everybody's "collections" but it makes me realize that for me the satisfaction from impulse buys can be short lived if I immediately move to another impulse buy. So my stash of 20 is small but perhaps that is what's best for me. The few I bought on impulse I may never build because there was no planning leading to the purchase. I enjoy building models but I enjoy just as much or perhaps more the research of the subject I want to replicate i.e what car in what race and what kit to start with and parts, decals and modifications to achieve the replica. So that is my learning for the day, finding a formula that works for me between the research & planning, purchasing and model building.
  8. Rich, absolutely fabulous build. Perfect in every way. Always a joy to see your work. I have this kit but did not know the kit has center lock wheels with knock offs. You just made my day, I want to do the Mille Miglia racing version and now I don't have to look for aftermarket wheels. Thanks!
  9. Thanks Matt, I'll look into that. I think the Heller/Airfix is the Lightweight Jag right? What they raced at Le Mans in 62 were steel bodied coupes. Thanks James, part of al list of items I will have to figure out. Change from left to right hand drive, engine with 48mm Webbers, race fuel tank and filler through the rear hatch and so much more. First I chose to experiment with wheels & tires. This was the only of the 3 cars on wire wheels instead of Dunlop racing wheels. PE or 3D print not yet ruled out but looking if I can recycle some of the stuff I have. The kit tires appear a bit small but look good on the car if I want to keep the unique E-type narrow track / low riding look. Also on hand a set of HRM wheels & tires all assembled (i.e glued) and a set from a Revell 300SLR (beautiful but very tall sidewalls). Pics 1 & 2 show the various sets Pic 3 the Jag set mocked on the car Pic 4 is the HRM set mocked on the car. A candidate but I would have to modify the rear wheelhouses to allow a lower stance. Pics 5-6 are 300 SLR wheels mounted on the Jag kit's tires. White line around rims is 0.25mm styrene I glued to tighten the fit & would be painted black to blend into the tire. I think that option is also a good candidate
  10. Starting work on one of the 3 Jaguar entries in the GT class at 62 Le Mans. Jaguar did fairly well with these steel bodied coupes at the race placing one with 4th overall and another in 5th. I'll be working on chassis 860458, reg 503 BBO which retired after 4 hours. Starting with the new Revell kit but with quite a few changes planned. There are available references photos from the race as well as the restored car which will help.
  11. Thank you fellows, I appreciate the nice feedback. Jason, can't say if all Tamiya kits go together this easily because this is my first one. This limited experience shows a great level of engineering expertise on the parts as well as the tooling to inject the styrene. A good example is the windshield designed with an angled edge perfectly matched on the body side. It mounts from the inside but ends up a flush mount with that design. Just good engineering of the parts and their interfaces, all done with very tight tolerances.
  12. Super nice Scott. I love the front end as you worked out the meshing, looks very realistic. I wonder why they routed the exhaust forward and then back under the front crossmember. That's surprising.
  13. Just finished and posted a build using their decals. Good product, fair price and good service.
  14. I tend to migrate towards 1970's and earlier subjects for my race car builds. It was the era of my youth but it was also a wonderful era for automotive styling. Aero was part of design for race cars but it was possibly more art than science, producing masterpieces like a Ferrari GTO, Ford GT 40, Cobra Daytona etc. Contemporary cars are aero optimized weapons of speed and tend to be less visually harmonious to this old modeler's eyes. Still some of the newer cars, like this 911 GT1 can be very interesting modeling subjects. Tamiya kit, basically OOB with only a bit of powertrain plumbing added and PE seatbelts (which are barely visible). A modern race car but I wanted a classic livery. Problem solved courtesy of Indycals with the Pennzoil livery. My first Tamiya kit and a real pleasure to work with. Everything just fits perfectly. Sort of like painting by numbers, no fixing needed, just follow the instructions.
  15. About 700? Van is way ahead of you!
  16. Beautiful build. Looks like it has seen some racing action. Well done!
  17. So I have a stash of 15, then I find 5 more hidden away...for a grand total of 20! I was wondering if it was a bit insane doing this but I hear numbers like 200, 500, 1000 and Mr Van the big winner at 5000+ You guys are great. Now I know I don't have a stash, I only have an emergency buffer. I now know I am completely normal although a bit deficient in stash performance. The wispers in my head saying Airfix Bentley, Tamiya Lotus 79, Gunze Cobra Daytona, NORMAL! The eBay siren chanting my name, NORMAL! I'm canceling the therapist, thanks to you guys and guess what I'm doing with the money I just saved?
  18. Masterful model sir! The weathering of the body and aging of various components are very, very convincing. Be proud, this is a masterful execution of a tricky kit.
  19. Beautiful work Matt. The spare tire tie down belts look very realistic. Good inspiration for a similar setup needed for a build I am just starting. Cool build!
  20. In my short (7 years) "career" I have completed about 30 builds. I used to buy, build, buy, build but lately it's evolved into a buy, buy, build, buy, buy, buy... I now get it when I read from you guys about "THE STASH" So here's my modest stash. I do plan to build maybe 12 of the 15 on the pile, starting with the one at the top TOMORROW! How big is your stash and your split between "I will build it" and " why did I buy this" ?
  21. Can't find a decent doctor around here...so what's your rate? Just in case...?
  22. A_M_A_Z_I_N_G !!!!!
  23. It is a gorgeous build Thomas. Glad the thread resurfaced so I could see it. Your 1/12 builds are always a joy to watch with the beautiful finishes and well crafted detailing.
