1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"
Casey replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yes. -
The AWB chassis for the Olds F-85 AWB kit is the same as used with the Unreal Edsel and '65 Chevelle, correct? Is it different from the chassis used under the AWB '65 Mustang, "Rat Packer" Chevy II/Nova, Falcon AWB, and/or Tempest AWB cars, too?

I forgot about the Scorpion, good catch. Maybe it's next?

Do you still have those photos, Geoff?

No kit of the Dunn & Reath R/E F/C was ever released AFAIK, only the F/E version by MPC. Here are the original issue chrome plated parts from the Piranha dragster. Like the American 12-spokes found in the AMT '56 Ford Victoria, they are molded as an inner and outer half, with six spokes per half: Looking at the RC2 reissue on eBay, the 12-spokes are still present, so I was wrong that the wheels were changed. It looks like only the box art model for the RC2 era reissue has the American 5-spokes up front. Except for one small problem-- it isn't a Funny Car. Now, had you said that because Round2 reissued the street/Man from U.N.C.L.E. version in two flavors not all that long ago, and are about to reissue two additional Piranha-related kits (the stand alone and combo kit), I would agree 100%.

I wonder if something happened to a mold insert(?) or similar at some point. The AMT 'Mr. Speed' '53 Studebaker Funny Car and Sand Kat kits both used the same Piranha dragster frame and running gear, but both the Mr. Speed kit seem to have included (Mark or anyone else know for sure?) the American 12-spoke wheels. I know for sure the RC2 reissue of the dragster included the 5-spoke spindle mount front wheels, so I guess we'll have to wait and see what Round2 decides to change/backdate/improve as far as the front wheels are concerned.

Looks like an annual AMT Camaro SS. The two-piece wrinkle wall pie crust slicks are an AMT thing, and comparing the underside to an MPC '72 Camaro, it's not an MPC kit:

No, not all: "In the end, not all the tools got sampled. When RC2 bought Ertl the program was cancelled and tools started getting shipped overseas. However, an impressive number of tools did get checked and sampled and the shots thereof have proven to be a big help in finding and putting some old kit tooling back together!" http://www.collectormodel.com/round2-models/2224-whats-a-hanger-shot/#sthash.d8SrRYk8.M8yER8mI.dpbs

Heads up that those are 1/24, and IMHO, look a bit larger than that, even). If you can find a set of the rear tires and wheels from the AMT Baldwin Motion '70.5 Camaro kit, those might work better with the 1/25 scale 'cuda:

I don't think I've ever seen the panel truck version in person, and this one looked to have been fully restored. -

It was, along with: "The other candidates were Foose’s 1934 Ford Mercury-inspired “Stallion,” 1935 “Grand Master” Chevy Master Sedan, 1936 “Impression” Ford based roadster, 1965 “Impostor” Impala, and his legendary Hemisfear custom supercar coupe." Also note it's spelled 'Impostor'.

Ah, that makes sense. Hopefully that is the case and we'll see the full top Scout in the not too distant future.

Round2 isn't really releasing new kits (save for the few modern car promos/easy assembly 'kits'), so your best bet is to hope for the Haulaway trailer to be reissued, and use it as a very basic starting point.

You're making assumptions with those statements, but really, there's no way to get either absolute or definite numbers for how many people would or wouldn't buy a particular kit. How do you know for sure that 50% of potential customers would have only purchased a stock kit, and that none of those customers would buy the Eldorod? I agree nobody but the most hardcore builder is going to try to turn the Eldorod kit into a stock Cadillac, but custom kits can be customized, too. We've seen builders use the parts as raw material for other builds and even built mostly box stock, there's room for customization, as with almost any model. Not everybody wants nor has the ability to heavily customize a model, so pre-customized models like the Eldorod, FD-100, Revell '49 Mercury, etc. do have appeal to buyers. Heck, the Revell '49 Merc has been in their catalog non-stop for almost a decade, and I would bet it outsells AMT's '49 Mercury by a wide margin. Maybe not a fair comparison since the AMT kit was only current for a limited time, but if you gave the mass public the choice of having a '49 Mercury with a pre-chopped roof over one they had to chop themselves, I bet the former would be chosen by a wide margin. Most people just don't have the skill and patience to perform such a drastic modification.

The lack of transparent molded parts might be why they went with this version instead of the Scout with the full top and multiple pieces of 'glass'.
