1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup WIP
Duddly01 replied to Duddly01's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thank you. I always make my hood and trunk hinges so they can still be easily removed but can be posed with the hood opened naturally. Outside race cars and a maybe an A12 Road Runner 440 Six Pack I don't know too many cars where the hood wasn't hinged. Thank You! Once I have the voltage regulator, hoses and wiring in place the hinge covers won't stand out so much. The driver's side will be easy, the voltage regulator and what I am assuming is the fuse box is right there. -

Created hood hinges, had to cut and create channels in firewall. I will camouflage when I go to detailing. Added magnets to help close hood. I really like to pose the hood open and still have the ability to take it off so I make my hinges so they can be. Drilled bed for tailgate chains. Started filling body seams for odd panels. I figured out how I am going to hide the LED battery as best as I can. I had a hollow tire in my spares. I really hate the filler panels. Such big noticeable seams to fill. drilled for tiny tailgate chains for some odd reason his kit didn’t come with a spare. In my reference pics the all have a spare under the bed at the very back. I cut a hollow tire to camo the LED battery. I am going to resin cast one of the rims to make a face for the spare too. -

Ah, that might be a thought. Considering the era I would like to go with chain but for a future more modern or hot-rodded build that sounds perfect. -

Has anyone found any sort of tiny chain that would be good for making the tailgate chains? Trying to figure out what I need for detailing. -
Thank You!

I am going to try to make it look like a spare first, but that is an option. I dug up an old hollow tire out of my stash that might at least mostly work. You'll see here if I accomplish it. -

Beautiful work! I haven't cut open doors yet. I cut open trunks just so I have a place to hide the LED battery, trying to make it look like a spare. Still have to figure out how I am going to hide the battery for this kit. -

Got some work done. Started assembling some components for paint. The engine and chassis and pedals for the interior. I love that the pedals are separate and not molded in. The chassis is really nice. I did however run into one thing I do not like at all. They engineered the kit so pieces of the body are added after the interior leaving huge incorrect seams. I can not live with that, I glued and will be filling the seams. It will be a fight getting the interior in but it is what it is. What were they thinking ?!? -

I think it will look great! Not sure what I will have it say yet. That’s what my wife says, personally I like the 1953 Ford that was another choice in the stash but she prefers the Chevy. And that with all the FORD Mustangs in the garage! -

My wife picked what color I had to go with. She even says I have to do the wood side slats. I am going to be learning how to make the seat look like old leather and the woodgrain for the bed. Will be new for me. Probably will make the side slats out of bass wood. -
I let my wife pick my next build and she decided next is a 1950 Chevy 3100. Picked up this kit last year and finally getting to it. First impression is it is a pretty nice kit. Good thing after the AMT 57 Thunderbird which is really not a good kit. As usual will have working headlights, taillights and gauge lights which has kind of become trademark of any build I do. preparing and testing for LEDs removing door handles, wipers, etc that will be replaced with resin or photo-etch cut in the openings for the wood stakes cut the end so the wood bed can be slid in after paint separately. what I am hoping to make it look like

I decided to take some more pictures outside today, both indirect and direct sunlight. Indirect sunlight Direct Sunlight

Interesting, I have only seen the black. Other than mine I am not sure how many others I have seen in person in Lime Gold though. Searching reference on Google seemed to be fairly even split, but I do like the black on Lime best.

Thank you! Thank You. Sadly, been there. I let mine go quite a long time ago to buy another 1966 Convertible, not the one I currently have. I wish I hadn't sold it. I have learned my lesson and two of the 1966 Mustangs I have now I have had for about 25 years or so. These two I will die with. They were both built on Dec. 1, 1965, ten cars apart. I was born Dec. 11, 1965, ten days later. I have already built scale models of them as well as the other 3 in the family.

Thank You! Thank You! I have been trying to use accurate paint colors through all of my builds. Luckily the paint for many classic models is available. Since I built the Mustangs, we currently have in the family I thought I would go back and do some we previously owned interspersed with other cars and trucks. My wife asked that I do a 1950 Chevy 3100 Pickup next though, in the dark green they were available in. This will be my third one in a row in green.

Thank You! Thank You! If I even hint at not adding LED lights to a build now my family gets on to me. The worst so far was making the pop-up headlights work for a C4 corvette though.
-
I would assume that was all the new law required early on. Thanks. Than you!

Thanks. My family tells me I can’t do a build without the working lights anymore. It is a challenge at time figuring out how I will make them work, especially for the corvettes. Finding room for the battery is also a challenge at times. Thank you!
