another use for Elmer's glue?
OldNYJim replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I really like both of these Elmer’s related tips! I always assumed Elmer’s wouldn’t be strong enough for a job like you demonstrated in the first tip - I guess I was wrong! I’ll be filing that one away for future reference. I like the technique for the pinning too - super clean precise work! -

That’s a great idea - I should research that! Thank you! -

They’re really outstanding - I’ve been thinking about how I could make gauges as crisp and scale-accurate all day! I wonder where one could find a 2400dpi (or higher) printer nowadays? Seems like it SHOULD be possible to find that easily in this day and age, but I’d bet I’d struggle to find one that the public could have short run work done on. -
What did you see on the road today?

I figured he was keeping the sidewalk trimmed, but that link is equally feasible -

Any day I see one of these is a good day! And this was on the next block across: And this lawnmower wouldn’t be remarkable...except this is a busy intersection and there’s not a lawn to mow within 30 blocks of here ??? -

I too was taken with the gauges (amongst 100 other cool things on this build)...I think buying an imagesetter is slightly out of my hobby budget, but the results are outstanding! I’d love to find something else on the market that could print as crisply as that! Gauges aside - beautiful build all round! Amazing work! -
Nice! ? This was one I was particularly looking forward to...not that I’ve started the first one of the six yet, but still...

Did my first little bit of airbrushing this week on this thing...went for a spooky Grim Reaper full-length mural on the roof. First, a black blob as a base (because it was easier to weed the mask if I was removing all the lighter parts than the darker parts): Then a super-intricate mask: And two hours of weeding, two minutes of painting and then another hour of weeding later... I’ll candy over the top of that whole thing once I do a few little bits on the rear pillars and figure out the best way to spray the new Createx candies I picked up for this build...more soon!

This one here: Didn’t meant to hijack your thread, my apologies ...looking forward to seeing more of this build! ? -

I love both those guy’s videos - I just started using Donn Yost’s painting technique recently after trying a bunch of stuff - can’t argue with the results right out of the airbrush! Anyhoo, great start - if all the parts look as good as the body this is going to be a great looking build! -

I don’t think you need many suggestions - that looks GREAT! -
I really wish we had a Hobby Lobby near here...we have a bunch of Michael’s but no HL! I guess I could take the Metro North to the nearest one, but the cost of the ticket would outweigh the 40% HL voucher they email me every week ??

Oh wow! ?. That apoxie sculpt works really well, it looks like! This is gonna be BANANAS when it’s done, I can’t wait to see it in person Better get going bud - only 56 days to go ??

I like upstate New York - when we eventually get sick of the city, if we do, that’s where we’ll be headed. Ideally a part with a good hobby shop nearby! ?
-
Nice work Dann - I really like the softening you did to the sharp edges on the seats, and I always enjoy your scratchbuilding!
-
That color works really well on there! It kinda reminds me of a cal-look Beetle or something - very surfy-looking of a color, but looks great on something sportier too!
-
That looks great Steve! I’ve been experimenting with a similar technique lately too...I MUCH prefer the look of a thin windshield compared to a lot of kit pieces, and I HATE replying on tiny little gluing surfaces, so making a little frame so the glass almost snaps right in there is a big plus for me!
-
This’ll be cool - I’ll be watching! Where in New York are you BTW? Bensonhurst, Brooklyn here!
-
Oh wow, this is GORGEOUS! I think Donn Yost built one of these in a very similar color in his video series, if you haven’t seen it. Nice job so far!

Thanks fellas! Little update - got my pearl coat on! I’d always imagined that body color having a little subtle flip-flop, so I mixed up some Pearl Ex and shot it on the body today: And shot a coat of clear over it so I could see it with some gloss over it: I like it! It retains that dark blue that I liked in the low spots but as the light catches it it flips to a lighter blue and even a little bit of a silver or turquoise...just need to stop my wife brushing the cat right next to the wet paint like I just found her doing so that it doesn’t get a lot of hair in it ?? IMG_6569.MP4 More soon!

I’m not an expert on old Ford speed parts, but are these optional heads meant to be Offenhausers? There’s no lettering on them like the 1:1s, but they’re pretty similar aside from that...
-
Thanks fellas! Didn’t forget about this one...was doing some bodywork to get this thing ready for paint - getting closer anyway! Got a BUNCH of figuring out to do on the graphics and paint job for this thing...it’s taking some thinking about to figure out how to layer all the masks and stuff to get the paint job I’m going for...more soon!
-
No notable progress today - but I like the combination of these wheels with the body color! All the blue bits are going to get a Pearl-Ex-infused clear coat next...but there’s a BUNCH of other blue bits that I hadn’t painted until today...excited to get those done next so I can start building up some clear coats! More soon!

Couple more little bits on this one this week...made an exhaust system: Drilled out some of the switches on the kit dash... ...(and deleted the ones that wouldn’t do anything if I was building this car for real, like the interior dome light switch), and picked a color for the wheels: I really need to start getting paint on this thing now - only nine weeks til NNL East, so I’m making an effort to work through all the little things that were STOPPING me getting some of the major components in paint already...I’m excited to get to the point of getting color on everything and actually see some finished parts! More soon!
