  1. I was working with some lighting today, and it made me think of watching Doug Whyte at the NNL East a couple of years ago. I don't know of any other photographer who is at his level. I would love to spend a week just watching what he does, how he does it, and the post-production and of course, the actual setup of the lighting for shots. With that, I added a second strobe to the soft box, and it made a big difference. I'll try to post before and after shots, but I just wanted to put my two cents in, for what it's worth...
  2. Jim Keeler told me he used to shoot the models on a piece of glass. I'll try to see if he has any prints/slides left of them. This is a great thread, even though it had a few bumps in the road along the way. Luke, I love your work. Please see Harry and me after class...
  3. I saw this on YouTube, and thought it was cool!
  4. The freezer trick works for me too
  5. Welcome, Pete! Yeah, I know those prices are quite the sticker shock. It's easy to spend a hundred bucks just on the simple supplies for one or two models. But then again, you're going to have something that you made, hopefully enjoyed building, and if you go to any local shows, meet some great new friends. e komo mai (welcome)
  6. If someone gets in touch with him, please have him contact me. I needed replacement filters, but never got a response from my emails.
  7. Yeah, I'm tired of it. It's not fair to Harry to put the burden of watching the schoolchildren in the playground. Harry does this voluntarily, and without his help, me and MCM would not be where we are today, and where we are going. John made a good point, once that jump happens, it's going to get worse, and now is the time to really put down the hammer. I have had a really laid back way of handling the "crisis" that show up here occasionally, and I have to change my ways. No more Mr. Nice Guy. The forum is a great place to learn new things about the hobby we love, meet great people who become great friends, and of course, get to show off our love of model cars.
  8. John, you're hired!!! But, I've known you a long time, and I don't think I would want to do this to you my friend!!
  9. Tye, what is Liquid Chrome? Did you prep the underneath at all? What did you polish it with? Sorry for all the questions, may I use your model for reference in the upcoming feature on the Dune Buggy?
  10. Yeah, I know, I messed up the cover. Sorry about that Chuck! You got the cover for December, but the model is featured in the January issue. As for what makes a cover car a cover car, it doesn't have to be perfect, look at all the times I've snuck my builds on the cover. What we look for is what we, as a collective group of glue-dropping, paint-throwing, x-acto knife-wielding bunch of modelers, would like to see on the cover for that issue. Oh yeah, and we take bribes.... rolls of unmarked twenties divided up between Harry and me.... This is probably that one and only time that something like this happens. Chuck, you made history my friend!!! Mahalo nui loa!
  11. Also make sure that your email or ISP is not blocking www.modelcarsmag.com. Thanks for answering, Tony. I should do one of those screen video captures for all the functions of the board.
  12. Unfortunately, this is the first time in I don't know how long I will not be able to make it to the NNL West. It's a big disappointment for me, since I feel that the NNL West is my "adopted home" show, with the roots of Plastic Fanatic and the bay area guys who have given me so much support over the years. I'm going to miss you guys this year. Yeah, I know, sniff, sniff, sniff...
  13. I just got wind of this thread a little while ago. I went a step beyond Harry's suspension, and put outright bans on a lot of people here tonight/today. If you have a problem with this, take it up with me, not Harry.
  14. I have heard that you may be able to get them in some places for $50, hope so. Put the chassis together. Not bad. Needs weights and some better tires.
  15. August 18, 2012 (Saturday) Houston, TX Houston Automotive Modelers Society (HAMS) presents their Sixth Annual Model Car Show. Location: Cypress Creek Christian Community Center at 6823 Cypresswood Drive, Spring, Texas 77379. Hours: 9:30AM to 5:00PM. Additional info at www.ipms-hams.org or contact Rob McQuown at Robert.mcquown@sbcglobal.net.
  16. As a final two cents on the original subject for this thread, yes, I have wanted to add a Rust/Weathered section for a long long long time. I think Jairus and I talked about that in the beginning. I am ashamed of a lot of the replies, comments, and innuendoes that were slung here over the past day or so.
  17. Thanks for putting the link to that Chuck. Here's the chassis built for one of them. Yes, that picture is correct. That "set screw" for the ring gear makes me cringe. I added aftermarket braids because I muckey-mucked the kit ones. Lots of small things need to be done. Friend said today to use aluminum tubing for the spacers for the axles, instead of the black plastic tubing. Need to get some bearings, better ring gear, and of course, some wide monster rear silicone tires and matching rims...

  20. Let me check this week. Email me if no word from me. gregg@modelcarsmag.com
  21. I'm just going to make a quick comment. The problem with doing any major changes, restructuring, or rearranging of the forum, tables, fields, etc., is that something is going to get messed up. Murphy's law. I can try to download the whole database, and do a test on it, but that takes time, probably a few hours of sitting or more, which is way past my max of 15 minutes. If someone wants to download the DB and try, let me know. It's not as simple as just adding or subtracting, you have all the corresponding data, fields, etc that will get moved, and if there's a link in there that doesn't go along with it, it will mess things up. And it will show up probably later more than now. Don't know if that makes any sense. With the lack of support I have had with this board (from the board programers, not y'all), I would be hesitant to even think about a major restructure.
  22. I just got the two new 1/25 scale slot car kits from AMT. The first two are a '66 Nova and a '70 Camaro. Pretty Cool! Hopefully I can put them together this week and try them out. Will let you know how they run.
  23. Grex makes good ones, great customer service. My "Cadillac" of airbrushes is the German one: Harder & Steenbeck Infinity. I love this airbrush, but I use it only for that "perfect" paint job. The Grex pistol type one is probably the most used one now.
  24. Here's one I dusted off. The Jo-Han Rambler Wagon from the Okey Days :-)
  25. I know, it was cold last night. Had to close the louvers..... I like the tail on the ground look for this. Can't wait to do the same for the convert that was just posted by Sean. Snuggy suit, I don't think I could get get into one, let alone know what they are!!!!
