  1. The original Surf Woody was painted with a pearl white center section of the body and the sides were painted a reddish bronze, almost maple color and then fogged into the top panels. The original had Astro chrome steel wheels as did the original kit, the "as cast" appearance on the wheels in the later (and current) releases are totally wrong, as there wasn't anything about the wheels that were cast. The front suspension minus the rack can give anyone wanting some detailed Mustang suspension parts something to work with, along with a 289 with the Cobra dress up kit and cast pan, a Mickey Thompson cross ram two four intake and carbs, although the dual Paxton superchargers may be a bit much to fit in a Mustang. And a fairly nice C-4 automatic transmission,

A little late now, but an FYI to future builders, the Chevrolet small block unlike the big block doesn't use a water bypass hose from the pump to the intake, and the one in the Grand Sport is no different than the production engines, their are some waterpumps with a provision for a fitting in the top of the water pump, but it's used as a heater hose fitting for some engines that didn't have room for one in the intake manifold, we did use it to run water from the rear of the intake manifold on some race cars to help the circulation of water in the heads and get rid of the steam pockets that some heads had problems with at the center cylinders. I based this information on photos of the Grand Sport serial number 004, if you want some very good pictures of the engine in this car, it's at the Revs Institute - Collier Collection web page. Gravity paints has single use urethane two part clear that is excellent, and all you have to do is mix the activator in it, pour it in the airbrush and paint and the results look like it's wet and with a little polishing are as good as any show worthy paint job. They also sell it in a multi use package that has the clear, activator, and a small bottle of thinner/retarder that when measured out and used properly can do three or four cars even though they say two, but there's a lot of waste if you use it for two, and once it's mixed you either use it or throw it out as it will make a nice clear plastic glob if you try to save it.
  6. Quite a few ended up running in the "modified stock" divisions where speed equipment and modifications were allowed. I know of a couple that ran on the dirt at local tracks as early late models in the sixties (don't ask me how they got the name) but they were allowed engines up to 1956 but they had to be stock engines. The early model Chevy was most popular since they could use the pop up pistons and the duntov cams that the fuelie cars and the two four cars used. But they could only use the tiny wcfb carbs on the the cast iron single four barrel manifold. But the F code 312's were strong in the Ford's, you know there's nothing better than cubic inches.
  7. Bet that would be a little uncomfortable to get into after it had sat in our nice summer sunshine for a while, can you imagine the the air conditioning that would take to keep it cool in one of OUR summer days of 110+ ?

  9. Imagine that, two companies produce a a model of what is basically the same same car, and they both look almost exactly the same. A miracle isn't it? I like the the old quote "They're EXACTLY the same, except where they're different" lol.
  10. You're right, don't know what I was thinking of, this old age thing is getting old. The Bronco pan that's posted elsewhere is the same as the Econoline van, and 4 wd pickup.

Just something to think about for future reference, if you're going to have a friendly paint shop mix your paint switching the metallic in the formula for a silver pearl will make for an even finer metallic than using the fine aluminum metallic. That's how fingernail polish gets such fine metallics for their colors. In fact if I can find a polish that matches or is super close I'll use it because their metallics are so close to scale appearance.
  13. In most cases the manufacturers ask whoever is building the box art model to leave the window glass out because it creates reflections during photography, and a retouch artist puts them in later. In this case the airbrush artist evidently wasn't aware of vent windows being on the real car.

  16. I do have some pictures of Ford in Ford sacrilege, at our big local show Kool April Nites, I took pictures of a clean '66 Mustang notchback but was really shocked that when I got around to taking pictures of underhood discovered that it had a 2300 cc Ford four cylinder for power.

Chris, the early Cobra (from the dealership) cast aluminum pan was a rear sump like the sbc, they are probably as rare as hens teeth, but many oval track pan and pump manufacturers make rear sump pans for the Ford motors, we had one in a Ford powered limited late model where the rules didn't allow a dry sump system. The Cobra pan was on the Ford small block motors in the John Buttera kits that Revell produced, and all are identical whether it's one of the different '34 body styles, or one of the '26 T variants.
  18. The front fenders, hood, grille and bumper, and the dash and depending on the option that's duplicated the seats might be different.
  19. Revell had a pretty nice tandem axle car trailer that was last released with the Edmunds Super Modified kit, the one with the car painted red on the box. I think it was also issued as a race team hauler with a Chevrolet van kit once.
  20. It should be ideal to use as a trailer for the new dirt bike kits from AMT.
  21. I'm building a copy of a car that was built in our area in the early sixties, and is still in town with just a freshen up by its new owner after sitting in forced storage for years. It's the tall T coupe from AMT and for the engine I'm using the flathead from the '34 sedan kit, (the gold car on the box) it takes a little work on the motor mounts on the frame for it to work but I think it'll be worth it.
  22. Those Torque Thrust wheels were in the AMT release that had a blue car on the box, but they were unplated. They may have been in at least one of the other Super Stock kits, but it's been years since I've opened one of either of the kits up.
  23. That's the official logo of the what is now known as the Green Triangle Growers Association. It used to be known as the Humboldt County Growers Association but it has enlarged with Trinity and Siskyou county joining.
  24. try using a roller ball from a roll on deodorant, coat it with contact adhesive and roll it with some pressure thorough some extra coarse silver glitter, then clear it to hold the glitter down better. If you can find some Li'l Daddy Roth Flake their silver looks like small pieces of mirror it's so shiny.

Why don't you get the two four set up from one of the AMT Riviera kits, and if you want to stay fifties style trans (but you have '60s rear suspension) go with the block adapter from the AMT '40 Ford coupe, and the '50 F-1 transmission from Revell since it has better detail, but it would be relative to the rear suspension if you used the B&M Hydro out of any of the early Revell kits with the Oldsmobile motor, the new custom version of the Olds coupe even has that trans.
