Hear you on the strict budget. That's been a lot of the last several years for me. I always thought dark blue looked nice with woodgrain. If you decide on maroon, I have a bottle of MCW Madiera Maroon I was going to use on another project, but I've been reconsidering my color choice. Yours if you'd like it. Charlie Larkin

Actually, lacquer-based paints tend to work better in cooler weather. Anything above about 25-30 degrees is good. Before I ended up back home a few years ago, I painted outside at my little senior studio apartment regularly. This is how I did it. Get a small table, folding might be easier if you have to cart anything a ways. I lived in an apartment with a curb-side entry and two steps down to the sidewalk, and had a small one-foot square stand. Upon said table, place a 10-ream paper box on it. If the bottom has a gap, run a couple of pieces of tape over it (inside and outside) to prevent accidents. Invest in some good paint aids. Little Motor Kar Ko. offers a very nice paint stand for about $10 that works well for many bodies. I'd also recommend buying the Tamiya paint-stand set; each body stand has its advantages and you'll find which one you perfer. The other Tamiya stand has clips on it for small parts and trees. Small, loose parts can can secured with painter's tap on toothpicks or popsicle sticks and painted. Paint as you need. Leave the parts outside for a few minutes for the worst of the stink to pass, and bring everything in to dry in a warmer environment. I agree with Rob- lacquer or enamel, warm the can first. It helps with paint atomization and you actually get more paint out of the can due to the increased pressure. Enamels can also be applied outside, however, they need to be brought in quickly or the paint won't harden right, as enamel dries by catalyst. Best bet is to do your painting before going out, and place the box in your bathroom and turn on the vent-fan. Charlie Larkin

I think I have one of these downstairs from when they were new and I was in high school, but I'm not sure. I really wasn't into Corvettes (I know, I was a weird kid in high school, now I'm just a weird adult.) My friends used to dream of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. I wanted to order a full-size Ford or GM wagon. I'd like to see this come back, too, especially if I don't have one. If nothing else, Round 2 might want to do the drag strip pack with stuff like that TV camera and some of the other odds and ends. I don't even build drag cars and I'd buy it for the assortment of weird and cool stuff that I might want to use someday. Charlie Larkin

Welcome home. I do miss it down there many days; loved the people and the food. And not being stuck back at home! Trust me, they won't confuse linguicia with kielbasa, and after trying linguicia, well...kielbasa lost its appeal for the most part. Blows I can't get it up this way too easily. We're meeting on the Stoughton/Canton line not even five minutes (seven if the lights are working against you) off of 24. 139 towards Stoughton, turn right at Turnpike St. where Cumby's is, go to Porter & Chester about 2 miles down, in the drive, left around to the auto shop, and in the door next to the shop garage, upstairs and into the meeting room upstairs. When I had my apartment, I used to set a small side-table outside with a 10-ream paper box on it, my paint stand and the parts. If I was air-brushing, I'd run the cord out the door (I had a curbside entry,) and paint. I'd let the paint dry outside for 10-15 minute to let the worst of the stench pass (especially in the winter with the windows closed,) and then bring everything in. Charlie Larkin

I'm tending to agree with Bill- too much material at once. Silver can be a very, very tough color to do well. Many, many years ago, prior to their takeover by the Evil Empire, Brand "S" magazine did an exemplary article by Larry Booth(e), sp.?) on how to do a killer silver paint job- it was around 1987-88, using his award-winning all-stock T-Bird Turbo Coupe. It came down to careful, even application of the color, plenty of time between coats, and believe it or not, contrary to many people's practices, an LMG polishing kit, going through all the steps from 2000 up. I don't recall if he used a clear or not, but with that polish, it might not be necessary. I also agree with Steve- try the Testors lacquer system in its entirety. I also suggest a good sandable lacquer primer like Plasti-Kote or Dupli-Color. For color, go with the AMC Platinum. It's a bit softer in tone and will be closer to the stock color if that's what you're going for. Charlie Larkin

I agree, 1-2 days is the absolute minimum before I'd even consider attempting overcoating with a different color. For masking, I use 3-M blue tape, and have had pretty good luck with it. I also tried the Testors tape in narrow width for a very narrow strip I needed to mask. Excellent stuff, as long as you don't need wider than 1/4". I have some Tamiya, and I suspect the Testors is very similar, but that's the wide width, and I'm curious to see how well it works. Charlie Larkin
