Can Anyone Tell Me What This Color Is?
charlie8575 replied to Quick GMC's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think Tony has it right. Looks like Wild Strawberry Metallic, which was used on Tempos, Topazes, Mustangs, and I think Escorts, in the late '80s. Nowhere near deep enough for Vintage or Heritage Burgundy, Chestnut was much more brown. And...wow, is that detailed at that small a scale! Charlie Larkin -
Every bit as nutty as that mouse, though, I'll bet, if not more. Charlie Larkin

Basil, oregano and thyme. Add some garlic with the flour in the base, and you have the start at a nice herb bread. Goes well with roast chicken and pasta. Very nice work on that, Tyler. Welcome to the forum, too. You'll enjoy it here. Charlie Larkin

Living room light/ DISPLAY CASE
charlie8575 replied to Amar2300's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I solved the wife problem. I don't have one. Sounds like a few of you guys either need to trade in, or, unless she makes a substantially larger amount, reminds her who pays the bills. I share the house with my father, who builds airplanes, and we're both looking at some improved display solutions for planes, trains and automobiles. These wouldn't be a bad start. If you like some of the Ikea products, check out the Billy book-cases. Used with glass doors and no-heat LED lighting, they'd make dandy display cases. We actually have a couple of them being used like that right now, and they work well for his cameras, our various bits of Masonic regalia, and some of our antique and vintage books. I can't remember what they're called, but they also make these really nice glass-walled steel cabinets that have a design motif not unlike an early refrigerator. They're a bit much for my budget (around $200,) but they looks great. Lastly, don't forget that building a set of built-in shelves in a case isn't that tough. A simple Danish-modern case can be built with two sheets of birch plywood, iron-on banding, and some Minwax Golden Oak or similar color stain. Other styles can be achieved with some Internet research and a little planning. Charlie Larkin -

A True Gluebomb Restoration 10/26 Finished
charlie8575 replied to Porscheman's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Nice color choice, Al. Man, did that clean up nice. Considering what you started with, it's quite remarkable. Charlie Larkin -
I don't believe Auto Color Library's sponsoring site carries touch-up bottles or custom spray cans, but it won't hurt to ask. I'd suggest ordering the paint from either MCW or Scale Finishes; if you don't have an airbrush and don't want one yet, I'd recommend a Preval sprayer, which many auto parts stores carry (usually NAPA, Parts Plus and similar franchised operations.) Also, many paint jobbers are now doing custom color cans and touch-up bottles. I can't think of anything in the Krylon line that's close to Peacock; Valspar, Ace or True Value's in-house lines might have something. If you don't have an airbrush, take advantage of Michael's 40-50% off coupons and grab one, or, if you have a good hobby shop nearby, try them. A Badger 250 is a great airbrush to start with- almost clog-proof and very easy to use. For the time being, use the Propel can. A couple of people have recommended the Campbell-Housefield (?) pancake compressor Wal-Mart has sold. I would recommend the Harbor Freight one, as they do work nicely when working, but the first one I had starting leaking, and the second one won't turn on for some reason, so I'm a bit reluctant to recommend it. All of those can be used safely over Dupli-Color Primer. I would recommend white because Dupli-Color's new "grey" sandable primer is, at leas to me, more of an off-black; again, many jobbers carry SEM sandable primer in a nice light grey. If you can obtain Plasti-Kote primer near you, I'd use that, as I've also had less trouble with their primer than Dupli-Color, which can sometimes be a bit "hot" chemically. Charlie Larkin

Peacock for something a bit different? I'd go with white for the interior. http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1964-Mercury-pg01.jpg http://oldcarbrochures.org/NA/Mercury/1964-Mercury/1964_Mercury_Full_Size_Brochure/1964-Mercury-Full-Size-19 Charlie Larkin

Quiet in the Chat Room......

I've had the same issue. I start typing and nobody answers. Talking to myself seems more productive sometimes... Charlie Larkin -
Excel or Quattro Pro (Word Perfect's spreadsheet) or the Open Office Calc all work well for this type of application. Setting the spreadsheet up is not that difficult. Column headers below: Manufacturer Model Mfr. # Qty. on-hand Notes Very easy. Takes two minutes to set up and re-size the columns, and as long as you need to enter data. Charlie Larkin

Never thought of the Ziplock bags, but not a bad idea. I store built-to-restore in Zip-Loc/Glad/store brand tight-seal food storage containers that are about shoe-box size. Evertything else, for now, is in banker's boxes. I like the idea of the big plastic totes, I've been planning to move them into those once I have the time to do it. Charlie Larkin

The rims do look nice on it. Nice, clean build, and it looks a bit like Embassy Gold. Charlie Larkin

Love it. I'd like to know the color as well, and the wheels used. They look very nice on that. Charlie Larkin

Nice job. How old is he? I have trouble with two-toning that clean. Charlie Larkin -
I like that color. Very nice selection. I'm thinking black with a red interior for mine. Charlie Larkin

Beautiful job on the steering. The interior is best done using the guide on the instruction sheets; it's fairly accurate for color placement. If you're doing a wise-guy's car, I'd suggest a muted color scheme- less flashy is better for that, but you still want to leave an impression. Seal Gray with the blue interior would be a nice choice. Scale Finishes has that available as a mix. Elm City Hobbies in Nova Scotia handles Canadian Distribution. If you don't have an airbrush, Testors Gloss Gray will do. Honey Cream with a brown interior would also be a good move. I would suggest using Testors flat brown, flat light brown and tan for the dark/medium/light areas. Not "exact," but it'll get you in the ballpark. Again, you can either use Scale Finishes or Testors 2-step lacquer Ford Phoenician Yellow is very, very close to the factory color. Black with a brown interior would also be within reason. I like Tamiya's Gloss Black. I think it's the best one on the market, and that includes the automotive paints. The paint chips are here. http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/aclchip.aspx?image=1953-Hudson-pg01.jpg Charlie Larkin

Cool! Didn't know they did this. Their s/h charges are a bit much, but if you shop carefully, even with those, it looks like there are some real bargains. Charlie Larkin
