collectors choice special edition- 1961 Impalas
Rob Hall replied to MR BIGGS's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Huh? The Lindberg '61 Impalas were molded in white in previous issues....they are molding them in color now? -
None have turned up on ebay or my usual online vendors yet, so I assume it's not out yet...I saw March listed somewhere. With some things, you have to take Tower Hobbies w/ a grain of salt--they have bogus release dates of March, April etc for AMT (Round2/Autoworld) releases that have already been out for a while, like the Chevy Titan, '60 Ford Starliner, '49 Ford...

I saw that. I'll believe it when I see it.

No...but both the Cutlass and Regal were announced as a diecast lowriders 2-3 years ago by Revell. Then canceled. Then announced last year as styrene Donks. Then canceled again. I'm expecting they will announce them again sometime this year. And cancel again (to be consistent).

Any suggestions on laptops???
Rob Hall replied to cruz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've basically quit using desktops, have 2 laptops these days..a Compaq Presario w/ Win XP (15 inch display, 1gb RAM) that I bought at Fry's last year for $650, fine for surfing the web, email, etc and an Apple Mac Book Pro (4Gb RAM) that I use for business/consulting/etc. -
Are decade style stereotypes over?
Rob Hall replied to KanelKustoms's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
One thing that is interesting about trends that come and go is often we see the same types cars from a given decade (like '60s muscle cars) done up in the style of a trend that is popular in a given decade. One current trend I like and like to build models of are the Pro-Touring style cars---'60s-70s cars with modern wheels, tires, brakes and often modern engines...I've been accumulating parts to do several cars this way in scale, vintage Mopars with modern 6.1 Hemis for example. I also like building them in retro styles also, though, i.e. a '60s car done in a '70s or '80s street machine style. One thing I do wonder, though, will the older styles of hot rodding die out as the older rodders fade away, or morph into something new? I.e. will younger people be interested in a style from 50 years ago or create their own---it seems to happen both ways---witness the 20 somethings that are into 'tuner' style Hondas yet there are also 20 somethings into Rat Rods, which seems to be a new spin on a very old style. -

Jarius, can you please keep your right wing delusional rants to yourself? They are irrelevant to the subject of model cars. -
EXCESSIVE PRICE INCREASES.
Rob Hall replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hasn't this been hashed to death on here and every other forum over the last couple of months? It is what it is...complaining isn't going to bring the prices down. -
1984 GMC Fall Guy 4x4
Rob Hall replied to Mj-Styro's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Cool...I've thought about doing an '84 Jimmy by kitbashing a spare '84 GMC 4x4 pickup w/ a spare '76 Blazer.. -
That's very cool...and I really like what's on its bed...who makes the 1:24th Maserati Gran Turismo?

Rob Hall replied to RodBurNeR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've bought mine from him on ebay...he usually has many hoods as Buy It Now items. Drag City ebay -
Any of those would be great. I think a regular 2dr wagon would be neat to see also.

My '87 Mustang GT was always easy on gas...in 5th gear at about 65, I've consistently received about 25-27MPG highway in the past..not bad for a V8. Too bad it doesn't have a 6 speed.

Yes, Ed's made a lot of good stuff.. I've bought quite a few of his hoods over the last few years. -
I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised about this kit or the '68 Mustang. It's been assumed since they were announced that they were just the existing diecast kits with styrene bodies and a few extra parts. The diecast versions have been out for years and any problems with them are known. It has some faults, but should be able to be built up into something pretty nice.
-
Yeah, I could see that being confusing....I've never driven a car with a column shift manual..seems like it would take some getting used to.
-
Yes, the CTS w/ a manual is one of the cars I'm seriously considering for my next new car. I test drove an '08 with an automatic, very sweet car.
-
I've done a bit of off roading w/ my Jeep (automatic) and my Bronco II before that (manual), and found I prefer an automatic off road...just shift into a low gear and 4 wheel drive, and have both hands on the wheel to concentrate on the trail. When I bought the Jeep, I didn't have a choice, no manuals offered in the GC.
-
Most of the time I'm driving an automatic...It's just easier to drive in the stop and go city and suburban traffic and heavy freeway traffic...and to drink coffee or a bottled water. About the only place I can really enjoy a car w/ a manual is on winding backroads out in the sticks--desert, mountains, etc. Don't get out of the metro area very often. My '87 Mustang GT is a manual, as was my M3. My next Mustang will be a manual, thought about a manual CTS for my next daily driver, but an automatic would be fine also.

The MKS platform shares nothing with the Jag S type. You are thinking about the defunct Lincoln LS. The S type is RWD. The new Taurus and MKS are built on the same D3 (Volvo P2) FWD/AWD platform as the current Taurus (formerly Five Hundred) and Sable, which is a platform derived from the previous-gen Volvo S80, shared with the XC90, XC70, S60..

Another idiot eBay buyer
Rob Hall replied to Terry Sumner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree. It's one thing to order resin items from a catalog or a web site and expect a delay, but eBay is for immediate shipment, IMHO. If there is a photo of an item for auction, it's natural for the buyers to assume it exists and is ready to ship. I've also seen model vendors doing preorders on ebay, which is a bit strange, IMHO. But at least they are calling them out as preorders, so it's not deceptive. -
Another idiot eBay buyer
Rob Hall replied to Terry Sumner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There is one well-known resin caster that sells on ebay, but takes 4-6 weeks or more to deliver. It's a bit misleading, IMHO...if you have it for sale on ebay, it should be already cast and ready to ship immediately, IMHO. -
I think I read somewhere that of new car sales in the US, manuals are around 3%. I've always liked a manual in a performance car, but am fine with an automatic in an SUV or luxury car.
