  1. I was a 1/25 racist for most of my modeling life. But now, with equal rights and my desire for kits to fit my "needs" and desires, I have Monogram 1/24 kits and also a pile of 1/24 VW's and some others to boot. I feel better for it!

  4. Speaking of 944's .. and their 924 predecessor, I have to agree these were fine machines. I had 5 of them total ... were my daily cars for over 25 years .. and I'm in snow country. They always got bad press from people that didn't know better .. many of those 911 owners. I doubt any of them ever drove one. Yes, they could always have used more horsepower, but people with big bore corvettes say the same. Just take one around one corner and you will be sold .. the handling was the best I ever felt .. so neutral and it made ME look like an accomplished driver! Yes, they were put together with various VW/Audi parts bin items .. hand picked by Porsche. I guess all those 911 naysayers weren't aware of Porsche's great engineering talent. They put those parts together in a way that turned out one of the best handling cars of the day .. for a small sum. I bought all mine used from @13,000 to $21,000 for a 2 year old '91 944 S2. My 2 liter BMW turbo has more HP than that 3 liter four. But the 924/944's were designed as GT automobiles .. high speed cruising from point A to point B ... something Americans didn't know much about, but practiced all the time.I loved these cars in my engineering business that had me on the road quite often servicing our clients. One client 4 hours away up the Adirondack NY Northway always asked how many tickets I got ... and paid for all of them! The 944 just settled down at 90mph .. felt more stable than at 55. At first I couldn't get snow tires for them but by the first 944 they finally became available and four of then kept me using them rather than a company truck when it was snowing. Dominik has done a beautiful job on this clean build. I've said this before when it was first posted .. and lost. All five of mine have been either built (2) or are on the workbench (3). My old avatar is the middle '87 944 engine.
  5. This IS obsessive, but I understand it completely. Your tutorials are clear, concise and I always know exactly where to go and what to get/buy for all the materials you use. There never a question left in my head after reading through one of your tuts!

  12. Thanks for the gracious comments everyone .. I do appreciate and they help to keep me on this. So, here's a real update .. not huge in quantity, but huge in advancing forward on this. I did some wood distressing today and my idea is going to work it seems. I planed down a piece of the outer wood at the bottom of the door with a chisel and glued a piece of .015" x .125 strip that I distressed with a knife . just taking slices at varying angles. I also did a short piece at the upper front that is rotted short of the because the underlying metal has rusted through. I also ran some fine saw teeth along all the raised wood to add some some grain. I believe this will look right once it is painted. That is my next try at this distress that's in my head. The front bodywork is pretty much done .. I'm still debating some custom tail light treatment.

  14. You all need to calm down and get a model built or something. It's pretty fine that everyone likes the best model car magazine our there but Greg's condition just doesn't allow such a rigid schedule as you all seem to need. ... his condition was explained by Harry .. time and time again. I doen't get bothered by any subscription being "late" though I have no idea when any of them are due .. they just magically show up one day and it's nice. So go build a model and when it comes, it comes.

  16. Things have been progressing slowly and have no photos but I have been looking into how I'll distress the wood. I want to have some missing pieces so went looking for woodies undergoing a restoration. I came on this pic that is just what I need and thought someone else looking here might appreciate what's under all that beautiful wood.
  17. Those rear tires are huge. I'd expect you really have to test fit the rear axle for tire fit on this one. I never built this but do have one and stole the tires for a '32 fendered Ford and it has been a constant grinding with the Dremel fitting them under those fenders. I expect you will have to do the same.

  21. I/m a firm believer in pinning ... I'm always adding pins for positive location and strength. All my newer builds have no missing outside rear view mirrors! I also agree locating the pins perfectly opposite in two parts can sometimes be tough. BigTallDad's suggestions were very good. I have a series of 1/2" long brass tubes I use to center pins into round pieces. I start with the largest that will slip over the end of the rod to be drilled and insert the others into it. The smallest fits my drill bit tightly and I get the hole dead center. I have also been pinning a lot of wheels that is the result of much wheel swapping. It has become standard practice for even the kit wheels. Two sleeves that fit tightly allow perfect fit and many mockups as well as strength. I use brass tubes but have used plastic tubes where it works. Plastic tubes will allow you to drill out the inside so it will slip over a positive ring on the part you are attaching to. A larger interlocking tube on the other part will give a positive mount.

  24. rust and weathering is looking very good ... the way I like to rust up something sitting in a barn .. let it sit and keep adding layers. I'll have to try some of your colors/materials.
