Parental Support and Car Modeling
Randy Kern replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hi, Dave! Nick told me you made the trek down to the MAMA meeting. That IS quite a haul! Will you be out at the NNL Nat's, also? Hope to see you at a MAMA meeting sometime. I don't get down there too often, but see Lyle and a few other MAMA members at the CPMCC meetings. As for girlfriends, I told Nick if you want to have money to spend on your car or models, don't get a girlfriend! -
Parental Support and Car Modeling
Randy Kern replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My start in model cars was more from my big brother, but my mother did allow me to get kits quite often. She knew where I was, and I was keeping out of trouble. I helped my daughter do a few when she was about 11 or 12, with no pushing, she got three or four done and that was it before the teen years. My son (NickF40) probably got into building models with my influence, but again I didn't push him, and he's been keeping at it now for about 5 years. Although, as it seems with everybody else, he got his first car, and the building has slowed considerably. I am proud of how much better a builder he has become, and how much he has learned about the hobby, hopefully from my support. Here's to the younger modelers! Keep on building! By the way Donn, will you be at the NNL Nat's? If so, see you there! -
Great job on that, Mitch. I think Dyno Don would like it! One easy to do, small detail, that really adds to any race car with a 'chute is to add a release cable and chute cords. You can even add them after the 'chute is in place. Any craft store would have the material for the cord, and a proper size wire for the cable. Pro Stocks from the first decade are my favorites. Keep 'em coming!

Ouch, that poor Triumph! Nigel, that's pretty cool, and 1/32 scale yet. It looks like a barn find with a slight bump . It's good to see these old Airfix models built. I've got several Bugeyes done, plus an Aston Martin DB5 and Mini to do.
-
Ahh, my favorite '32 street rod. That color should look pretty nice! As Raul said, don't sand the last metallic color coat. You will see scratches and muddiness under the clear coat. Solid colors are ok to sand before clear, or even polish out without the clear. Don't use any cleaner on it, either. Just try to make that last metallic color coat dust and lint free!

Raul, that truck is looking really cool in color! Those tail lights have a sort of Cadillac look to them, and fit in perfectly. Can't wait to see it done.

NNL Nationals Toledo..... Who's going?
Randy Kern replied to PatRedmond's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This will be my first visit. I definitely want to try to meet the forum guys. It's only an eight hour drive from my area . See ya there! -
Kenny, that's a neat little Morris! I've got the R&R panel version to do, definitely as a street rod. Very cool!
-
Nigel, now that is different, and cool! I'm also picturing how it would look 'in the weeds'.......great job!
-
Very nice build there, Emily! This really brings back good memories of helping my daughter build her first model. She only stayed with the hobby for a little while, but it was just neat to see how satisfied and proud she was when it was finished. I also hope you continue on with building, who knows, you may just be the next Shannon Dimaulo!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. This was a fun, fairly quick build. I thought I'd go with Lyle's idea of this being the year of resin builds. After all, he is a trend setter! As far as wagon master, only if I would have done Steve Milberry's '58 Pontiac Safari, or Bob Downie's Magnissimo. Both over the top! Hey, I'm excited about my first trip to Toledo, and putting some faces to the names, and especially hoping that George 53 character is there!

Russell, that is just beautiful. This Ferrari body style is one of my favorites, also. Superb detailing throughout, and a great finish. I built the ROG kit a couple years ago, and just picked up this kit (still sealed) at my club's show for only $7.50!

I just finished this curbside for the Toledo show. This is Jimmy Flintstone's Nomad body for the new Camaro, with a PSF Hobbies hood and chin spoiler. Paint is Dupli-Color Arcadia Green and Silver. As a lower cost alternative, I decided to try the latest Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss on it to see how it performed, and it sprayed on and polished out beautifully. The wheels were given a shot of dull-cote. I also made cargo area bed sides, using embossing powder for carpet. I didn't like the grille grid, so I put a piece of plastic mesh over it for a different look. Here's another wagon I'd love to have in my garage! Thanks for looking.

1/12 `69 Camaro Z/28 Cross-Ram.....Huggar Orange
Randy Kern replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Cars
Sorry to echo everyone else, but incredibly beautiful! Being 1/12 scale, you've got plenty of great details in both, and the paint work is exceptional, also. I would like the orange one in 1/1 scale, my holy grail of Camaros! -
Another incredible build! After seeing it at the show Sunday, I can't wait till it's done. This paint scheme, along with the Hot Wheels and Rain-x cars were my favorites. Hey Chris, now you'll have to get Paul Gentilozzi to sign the roof with a big Sharpie!

I don't have much interest in Nascar builds, but you just have to appreciate the quality, in every aspect, of this build. I think Chris rates right up there with the best Nascar builders, and if he had a professional taking the photos (sorry, Chris ) you would definitely see it. Cruz is right, it's more impressive in person. Uh....did you build this one on the floor, also?

Your Very First Real Car
Randy Kern replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Very cool Bugeye Sprite, Scott! What you need to do is get over to the East coast and take my Bugeye home with you. It'll be a lot easier, and it's needing a new owner! That's NickF40 standing with it (about 10 years ago). B) -
Cruz, it's too cool!! I can just hear that rotary screaming at 9,000 RPM! Beautiful and classy, all business color, and the stripes really set it off. Can't wait to see it!

Your Very First Real Car
Randy Kern replied to FujimiLover's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In 1971, the year I got my driver's license and turned 16, I bought this '65 Chevy Impala for $350.00. It had the factory 327-300hp motor with 4bbl and Muncie 4-speed. I put on a set of chrome slot wheels with G-60s in back and Walker glass packs. Not too shabby for a kid in 11th grade working at Howard Johnson's! Here she is, and I'd love to have it back! -
Cruz, that color with those stripes and the wheel & tire combo gives it a serious, street racer look! I hope you get it finished for the show Sunday, as it will be a real standout. See you then!
-
Wow, that is both beautiful and wicked! Those rear tires help tone down that big bumper . The detailing and paint are so clean looking. Very cool!

'65 Chevy Stepside Pickup 2 'n 1
Randy Kern replied to Randy Kern's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Luc, they're the B.F. Goodrich Silvertowns, and that's all the lettering on the side walls, along with the ribs. Here's a pic of it assembled. I guess you could make them a little more like factory stock by de-chroming and painting the wheels. -
I thought I'd give a try at doing a kit review, so here goes. This is Revell's latest issue of the 1965 Chevy Stepside Pickup, that I believe was originally released in '96 with a Hemi-Hydro boat. It was also a '98 re-issue of just the truck. I don't have the other two versions, but it looks like all the parts from them are here. This issue now includes: the modern Torque-Thrust big 'n littles from the 'California Wheels' '65 Chevy Pickup (in addition to the chrome reverse-baby moon whitewall combo), custom air cleaner, carb, manifold, headers and valve covers for the 283, radiator shroud, lowered front suspension, and very tastefully done flames, wood bed, and disc brake rotor decals. There are even individual 'CHEVROLET' tail gate letters in silver, white or black. Here are the parts pics I built the '64 Fleetside 'California Wheels' truck when it came out, and it was a great kit to build, as I'm sure this one looks to be. Here's a shot of it I love the new style Torque-Thrust wheel & tire combo, as they are just the right size for a lot of other street machine builds, and not too large in diameter. I used them on my recent '65 Impala Wagon, detailing the spokes with aluminum paint to really make them pop. The box art being the actual model, and a very well-built one at that, really tops it off. Truck lovers, snap it up!

Beautifully done, Bill! I love that shade of red, it really compliments the wire wheels. I think the longer exhaust tips gives it a neat Ferrari look. Hope to see it at the Showdown. Hey, watch what you say about bug-eyed!
