I love these threads, as you get to see everybody's great work all together. I wasn't as productive as last year, as I've had a few slumps, but I had fun with these. Keep on building! My 2009. Not a very good year, realistically.
Randy Kern replied to Ron Hamilton's topic in Model Cars
Ron, they're all great models, the Buick being the highlight build. I enjoy seeing you the few times I get down to the MAMA meetings, and I consider you one of my favorite builders. Keep on plugging along and building, and I hope next year is a better one for you. -
CPMCC Meeting and Party pics
Randy Kern replied to Lyle Willits's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
Ken, that was built by club member Jeff Emlet (hope I spelled his last name right). -

Randy Kern replied to Greg Cullinan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Roger, all of the glass is red, including the head and tail light lenses. The only thing I can find that the original had, that the re-issue doesn't have, are the few sponsor decals (Doug's Headers and Crane Cams). -
Revell/Monogram "Street Fighter" Questions.
Randy Kern replied to Joe Handley's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Joe, I just picked up the re-issued kit at my club meeting yesterday, and it looks to be exactly the same as the original. Check over in the general section, as I have a photo of my original kit and box. -
All beautiful builds, that I'm fortunate to see up close in person. I want to retire soon so I can also build at a tremendous pace. I have too many kits to finish before I kick the bucket

Tom Daniel Street Fighter
Randy Kern replied to Greg Cullinan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Greg, I still managed to keep mine I built 39 years ago, with the box! I just got the re-issued one at our club meeting yesterday, and it looks to be exactly the same as the original, including that classic box art! I don't care what people pick at about this kit, as I still get a kick out of it! Here you go. -
A beautiful model, Brendan! If this is the same Audi they used in the TOCA race games for the PC, then my son (NickF40) and I raced many times at our computer, just using the keyboard . I know this car even seemed to have an edge in the game. Very cool!

This is the Fujimi kit. Paint is Dupli-Color Med Maui Blue Met. The carbon fiber decals are from Scale Motorsports. The spoiler is from the Corvette C5-R, with the end plates removed. Wheels & tires are from the Tamiya Ferrari 360 Modena, and the exhaust tips are aluminum tubing. I just wanted a nice, clean street version with a few extra race details. Thanks for looking! THE END.

For your first air brush paint job, that came out beautifully! I love to see these 'in the weeds'. A very cool build, and welcome to the forum.

Clear Question
Randy Kern replied to Nick Winter's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dupli-Color clear is a great product when used properly. I use it all the time to clear. So do lots of others, including Bill Stillwagon on his customs with perfect finishes. If you use Dupli-Color paints (that are lacquers) over enamels, you are going to have a bad reaction, such as crinkling and paint lifting. You can't put lacquer over enamel, because it is a hotter paint. You can use enamel over lacquer with no problems, though. You can get a decent clear coat with the basic Testors clear, by carefully sanding each coat, and hoping you don't get dust in the final coat. The lacquers though, including Tamiya's clear, will have to be polished to get a mirror-like shine, if you're shooting for that. I've even had great results recently using a $3.50 can of Krylon Crystal Clear clear coat, polishing it out. Just remember not to put a hotter paint over a cooler one. -
That is cool. No, cool x 100!! I've wanted to get this kit since it came out, and yours is beautiful. great job!

What a clean, beautiful build of one of my favorite GTOs. That color looks like Med. Maui Blue, also a favorite of mine. The Cragars give it a classic street machine look. Cool!

NO. Dave, Bob, Lyle and Andy summed it up perfectly. I guess there are some people whose whole lives are consumed with computers and the internet, so post on the thousands of other forums for the off topic subjects.

Dale, that's flat-out cool! Another fine build, of your usual quality. Between you and Chris, our club has a couple of the best race car builders around.

Happy birthday to Mr. Bill !
Randy Kern replied to Eshaver's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Bill, hope you had a great day. You're still a young pup, you didn't hit 50 yet . -
Rick, I did introduce myself, and was glad to meet and talk to you a little. Thanks for a great show, and it was cool to finally make it there for the first time this year. I got to meet and chat with lots of builders, putting faces to some notable names. Even though it was an eight hour drive, coming out Friday made it a nice, long, relaxed weekend get-away to completely surround yourself in model cars and toys! See ya next year.

Even More NNL Pics
Randy Kern replied to Tom Jackson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great shots there, Tom. It was good to meet you. I hope your camera lens didn't break after taking my photo! ;) -
My first visit, and it was a great show! I got to hang out and have dinner not only with my club members, but also 'Chopper' Lear, Bill Stillwagon, Doug Harrell and Bob Dudek (thanks again Bob, for picking up the tab Sat. night!). Also met and chatted with George (53) Hernandez, Tom Jackson, Randy Derr, Mike Madlinger, Morgan Barclay, Rick Forrester, Steve 'Z Man' Zimmerman, Gary Kulchock, and Tom Kren to name a few. I definitely plan to go next year. Oh hey, now we know what George 53 looks like, he's in the photo with Chopper . Here's a link to the photos. http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p40/Ran...NL%20Nationals/

The Way We Were
Randy Kern replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
;) Bill, that is priceless! Hey, you should be smiling like that for your avatar pic Snazzy dresser, too! That's another car you probably would want back, huh? Cool photo! -
Tommy, beautiful builds, real and model! The '66 and '67 Novas are my favorite body style, and your build is top-notch.

I have been using stands I have made, that are close to what Charlie described, for about 15 years, and they work great. Very simple, inexpensive, adaptable to any body. The Tamiya stand is very nice for the money, and Donn's method is good, too. I don't really leave my stand on the paint booth floor surface, as I always hold it while turning it, so I don't need a rotating stand. The large holes I put in mine make it very easy to turn as I hold it. I have adapted my dehydrator so that the extra height fits fine. Here's a couple pics of what I use: A small piece of wood, a coat hanger, and there you have it. Plus the satisfaction that you made it yourself.

New old guy in the house
Randy Kern replied to oldscool's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome to the forum, Gerald. I'm a '55 model, still running, but needing some restoration work Glad to have you here, and as you've said, with this hobby you may stray, but you usually come back! -
NNL Nationals Toledo..... Who's going?
Randy Kern replied to PatRedmond's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here 'ya go, George. I just remembered I picked this flier up at the NNL East. -
What new technique have you learned lately?
Randy Kern replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The most helpful techniques I've learned lately were learning how to paint plastic to look like wood (thanks to instructor Lyle Willits)....... and using embossing powder to simulate carpet (thanks to a forum member). I hope to sometime get an airbrush and learn how to use it (maybe Mr. Geary can help with that ), and learn more engine detailing techniques.
