Tamiya's New Primer is out
Chuck Most replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, Duplicolor is pretty sensitive to humidity, that's the one thing I don't really like about it. I know its true that ALL paints are vulnerable to humidity, but it seems like Duplicolor is even 'touchier' than most others when humidity comes into the equation. On the plus side, it has always sanded beautifully for me, and cures quickly. I do like the Tamiya acrylics (the stuff that comes in the small glass bottles for brush or airbrush application), and I've never had any trouble with the Taimya acrylics seeping into Duplicolor primer, though I have had a few isolated issues with the Tamiya not wanting to adhere to the Duplicolor, though I'm not sure if that's the nature of the two paints or just something I'm screwing up. -
The R&R is a '64, and depending on how good you are working with resin, you might want to think twice before you go with an R&R kit.

Cadillac 354cid V-8? (Parts pack)
Chuck Most replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It builds up really nice, and that four-carb intake is one of my favorite kit parts. -
Love it! And don't keep it in a closed display case or cabinet- dust will only add to the character of a build like this (in moderation, of course).

1/25 AMT '76 Gremlin X 2n1 coming from Round 2
Chuck Most replied to SteveG's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'd like to see them bring the Pacer back, and possibly the Matador and Matador Bobby Allison stock car kit. With the arrival of the Moebius Hudson Hornet, and the impending reissue of this and the JoHan '59 Rambler, its shaping up to be a good year for AMC fans. -
More messing with 8-bolt 3/4-1 ton truck tires. Why? I've got something like this in mind-

"Holy Grail" Models?
Chuck Most replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The big one for me is the Premeire Studebaker Champ pickup. -
Found my powerplant... and to up the goodness, it's a glue bomb itself! It's the AMC/Jeep 4.0 inline six from a Tamiya Wrangler. It's not a fantastic engine, looks more like something from a Lego playset, and I'll definitely need to come up with another trans for it, but toss on a turbo and I've got an oddball powerplant for my oddball Nash hot rod.

How Much Do You Have Invested ?
Chuck Most replied to XJ6's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ah... now THAT I have a good handle on! 1978 Washburn Falcon - free (inherited it) 1998 Harmony Sunburst 'strat'- $50 at a pawn shop Beat-up Marshall VS30 amp- got it for free because it was taking up space in a buddy's attic Even with strings, cords, picks, straps, cases and gig bags, I doubt I have $500 in music equipment. At least I have ONE of my hobbies in check! -
So far, this is the only Caddy I've built (besides the JoHan '77 Coupe Deville)- a hearse based on the old Ecto ambulance- And another Ecto being turned into a pickup

Makes no difference when spraying Duplicolor over Duplicolor, though. -
What can we learn from Steve Jobs?
Chuck Most replied to sjordan2's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Steve Jobs... Henry Ford... Thomas Edsion...Nikola Tesla... what do they all have in common? They were all visionaries who, by most accounts, weren't the most pleasant people to deal with on a one-on-one basis. (And that is the ONLY comparison I'm making between Jobs and those other guys.) As to the matter at hand- Not a fan of Jobs or Apple, but even I can get behind what he's saying. -
Odd Job was a pretty big guy... maybe that balanced the load?

The Hornet's Nest: Hudson Hornet Build Madness!

I'm just stuck on a powerplant for mine. I was even considering a boooooooooooring Small Block Chevy (but with a cool intake), but now I'm leaning toward an old Buick Nailhead. -
This is just cool!

Though you could argue the Model A does have a computer.... Sure, most people think of a 'computer' as being electronic, but there were mechanical computers long before electronic ones. A computer is a programmable device designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations. It could be argued a carburetor does just such an operation- meters a given amount of fuel to the engine. So, depending on how loosely you use the term, you could argue the Model A has at least one computer on it, albeit a mechanical one. -
If you aren't familiar with the story of the SS American Star, a pretty complete history can be found here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_America_(1940) She was one of the last great American liners, and lived a long and storied history until her infamous final cruise in 1978. But she is perhaps most famous for wrecking 100 yards offshore in the Canary Islands in January 1994, after spending almost a decade and a half 'at the wall' after an aborted salvage attempt. She was under tow to Asia to be converted into a floating hotel when the tow lines parted, and she crashed into a sandbar. There she sat until just a few years ago, when the bow section finally collapsed and fell into the sea. This is perhaps the most well-known image of her, circa 2004. The severed stern section collapsed and sank in 1996, but is still visible in aerial photos of the wreck. Now the bow has collapsed and sunk as well. The hole along the keel was not caused by the collision- it was cut there by salvagers to prevent the wreck from floating free and becoming a navigation hazard. A few photos illustrating the bow's deterioration I'm thinking making the actual hull will be easy- the Revell or Glencoe SS United States looks like it can be modified into a pretty close duplicate of the SS America. Making the beach shouldn't be a huge challenge, but the one thing that's holding me back is duplicating the choppy surface of the ocean around the wreck. Just wondering- has anyone else done a shipwreck diorama? I've seen quite a few dioramas of war ships in water, but never of anything close to shore- where the water is typically clearer and lighter. I've actually seen a model of the SS American Star wreck, but it was set on a wooden base, with no representation of water or the beach. Oh, for those interested, there is a pretty good site dedicated to this ship, both as a wreck and during her heyday and decline- http://ss-australis.com/

Making a stock coupe by cutting off the molded deck and subsituting the stock turtle deck should be a very workable proposition, though. I'm still kicking around that idea with the chopped verision- I dont think I've ever seen a fendered, chopped T hot rod model. Done right, such a build would look very cool.

Not for me! Then again, I still haven't come up with a compelling excuse NOT to buy the Bandit Resins transkit... -

Sorry- I was a bit more stoked for the 'GT' version that was being speculated earlier. Seeing its been put back to a stock variant kind of knocked the wind out of the sails on this one for me. -
