I think a lot of it has to do with what's under the skin, and I think a lot of kit builders like Pocher have it wrong. There are so many similarities between the 500K and 540K it's hard to keep it straight. But I'll go with what RM Auctions says. They ought to know.

Totally. Excellent work.

If you click at the bottom of that page, then go ahead a couple of pages, you'll see he did his best to replicate the "pearlescent frost-blue." As with the 1:1, the pictures don't really capture it.

The same kit has been boxed by Lindberg except it contains a chrome sprue.

Not to be critical, but this is the Under Glass section and we have no pictures.

Duplicolor paint pulling away from masked edges?
sjordan2 replied to Hawk312's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Would there be any difference in the behavior of the metallic paint on the Mustang stripes and the non-metallic on the Camaro stripes? In any case, your paint jobs are always awesome and if you're confused about this one, it would be important to get to the bottom of this to inform shlubs like me. -
I just received the original Gold Cup issue of Jo-Han's superb Mercedes 500K coupe, which was molded in the perfect color. There are no seam lines, sink marks, difficult flash or ejector pin marks visible anywhere on the body. This is really a stunning kit with amazing detail and accuracy for a 1/25 model. There are only some tiny inaccuracies that are easily dealt with. However, the eBay seller said it was molded in two shades of maroon. The fact is, the hood and the fenders have been painted. The main body shell is perfect, with no scratches, and I would prefer to keep the bare plastic exterior and only polish it or coat it with Future. Before I make a mistake while stripping the paint down to the bare plastic, are there any suggestions for bringing it back to its original molded color without harm? I use Purple Power with great success, but never with the idea of going back to the original plastic.

I couldn't resist noting the irony that this discussion is in the Big Boyz section.

Well, ya done good, boy.

Plus a few words here to make sure I don't merely answer this with an emoticon.

Just got it today, in perfect condition as usual. I must say that this issue has some of the best photography I've ever seen in MCM, especially on the cover and in the section on GSL XXIII. I just wonder if dedicating the cover to specialized subjects like a sprint car and a dragster has enough newsstand appeal to attract a wide audience. I say that because I'm loyal enough to the mag to root for its success. One question: In the review of the CMC Bugatti Atlantic diecast, the question is asked if there should only be two taillights - no photos on how the kit handles it. This model is based on the Pope Atlantic currently owned by Ralph Lauren (now painted black). The Pope car in earlier blue paint (like the model) should only have one brake taillight per side (as Wayne Moyer noted from the L.G. Matthews book), but the Lauren restoration has two taillights on each side, for a total of four. Same car, different stuff.

A Personal Apology
sjordan2 replied to Steve Keck's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm with you. And I still don't understand what this is about. -
It's hard to tell from the photos above, but the original show car was actually a white pearl with a tinge of ice blue. It was repainted red for the movie because that color didn't photograph well. Interesting background here, plus a couple of shots of the red version in poor condition before it became the Batmobile. Includes a shot of the Revell kit in a color that looks very much like what you're doing. http://theinvisibleagent.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/the-lincoln-futura-concept-car-1955/

I just won a Jo-Han 1935 Mercedes 500K coupe on eBay for a very reasonable $22 (which includes shipping) and am tremendously excited about it, and wondering if I will need to mash it with any of the Monogram kits. Interesting to note that (as I have heard), the Pocher 540K kits are actually 500Ks as the engine pictures indicate, and can provide some good engine and mechanical reference. There are only about 3 to 4 reference photos available for the original 500K coupe, but more for the Monogram 540K coupe as I posted above.
-
Sorry, Harry, I don't get your point at all. We've got the lists covered in spades, but there's plenty of opportunity here to discuss these type of kits, how they might relate between Monogram and other similar classic car kits of other brands, yada yada yada, and where to find additional information on them. Why is there a problem?

Silver is always good on a Mercedes. But Mercedes no longer offers basic, standard paint options on this car. If you have an airbrush, how about the new Mercedes Aluma-Beam painted with Alclad or Krylon chrome? All new versions of this car are done either with a chrome-like base for various colors or a semigloss/matte finish for charcoal (NATO black recommended). http://www.mbusa.com...ection-exterior

1/18 parts in a 1/16 model?
sjordan2 replied to Toast's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
It all depends on what the kit is and what the 1/18 diecast is. I know that there can be quite a bit of difference between 1/24 and 1/25, so it all gets down to specifics. For example, I have a "1/18" Bburago Bugatti T59 metal kit, which is actually somewhere between 1/16 and 1/15 (apparently so Bburago could use the same wire wheels on all their classic diecasts). I can use parts from other 1/16 kits with no problem. On the other hand, I have a 1/16 Mercedes SS kit that can rob parts from a 1/18 Bburago Mercedes SSK without a lot of visible differences. As I said, it just depends on the kits. -
For anyone interested in building the Mercedes 540K coupe above, there are a few good reference shots of the 1:1 here: http://www.ultimatec...zial-Coupe.html For pretty good reference on any 540K, you might want to drag this to your desktop (a very detailed 4.5MB file), and reviewing the Pocher builds at scalemotorcars.com is helpful in adding detail to the kits above for Rolls, Bugatti and Mercedes. You can also download the Pocher instructions there for free.

Very nice deco style. Reminds me of the opening titles of the old Hercule Poirot TV series. I would hate to see what the 2CV looked like after the train caught up with it.

We continue to have new members asking how to post photos to this forum. Somehow, the tutorial on this subject has grown to 4 pages and in my estimation has become needlessly complex. Can someone in admin go in and edit it and simplify it, and keep it pinned and locked? We don't need a ton of people adding their spin on it when it's so easy. If there are special questions, I would think these could be answered on an as-needed basis, and admin could adapt them to the pinned and locked thread if necessary, without allowing access to the thread by others. I think it just confuses people otherwise. Perhaps the pinned tutorial could add an FAQ for dealing with questions as they arise, which would have to be edited by admin. Also, this tutorial thread is way down in Tips, Tricks, etc., and I think a duplicate of it should be kept in General where newbies and others will discover it more easily.

Recommendations for sharing pictures
sjordan2 replied to Mirage's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There should be no problem with Photobucket or Fotki. Just set up separate albums for individual builds you want to share, if you have multiple images, and paste the links here. For example, if you have a Charger build with several images you want to share, set up an individual album for that build on the hosting site and post the album link here. Not sure why you have a problem with flickr. All you need to do is post the link. If you want to post the individual images here, that's a different process and you need to look at the tutorial posted on this forum. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=12248
