Now THIS is ridiculous!
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's one of the chief reasons I never bought one. Not much is more irritating when you have a quiet weekend and someone out of the blue you've never heard of wants something moved. I'm of the mind that I'll just have to be 'that guy' and simply say no if I ever get a truck and that situation arises. Either that or charge 'em and probably be confident they'll never ask again! -
Jason, that is absolutely gorgeous! One of my favorite '50's European cars! In fact, this model and your pics are so nice, I saved 'em all!

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That's a VERY good question Bob! Or, are they now delving into 3D printing for their tooling? That would be interesting to find out! -
I just ran across the thread where he focused on the Valiant solely....................
-
Just a thought, but with the '64 Dodge kit you have there, its roofline will get you part of the way. The rear window will be tricky. That might need to be vacuformed if you want the shape to be close. And yes, the sedan's roofline was about a ½" -1 " taller than the hardtops. BTW, here's the thread where someone was doing a Valiant conversion. He was doing pretty much the same thing you're doing now.

There's no way I'd EVER do this to my Challenger! Not only does it look trifling, but it's also terrifically DANGEROUS! Check out the pic here........

That's a malady that seems to afflict Monogram's '59 as well. What I ended up doing on my '59 is I grinded down the chassis sides a bit so that once the chassis was in, it wasn't hanging so much below the rockers.

Mopar A series 318 "Poly" V8

For those interested, I did a buildup of Doug's 3D printed engine.......... -
Raoul, you did a FANTASTIC job on what is a holy grail kit of mine! I don't think I'll ever be able to get one of those at a reasonable price, so I've got the bits and pieces to turn Monogram's '68 into a convertible sometime. And yes, Verdoro green is one of my FAVORITE colors for any '68 GTO or Firebird!

I think I’m done with Duplicolor
MrObsessive replied to Brutalform's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Chalk another user up as a big fan of Plastikote! Particularly the sandable gray primer T-35. Yes, you can still get it albeit online as no one in my area seems to carry it anymore. And yes, the formula has changed just a bit as it may be slightly hotter than before, but I airbrush 'bout everything. This where I STRONGLY recommend again that one should be putting some kind of barrier coat on the plastic as the plastics of today CANNOT be trusted as they are not the same as they were in years past. Everything (including plastics) has been cheapened to save money--------to our chagrin in not getting the results we used to get in years past. Yes, it can be more work to do all of that, but it's just as much work if not more so to COMPLETELY strip a model body or part because of paint troubles. For me the trouble is very much worth it as IMO, a good paint job is THE most important part of building along with near flawless bodywork. It's the very first thing people will see once your model is on display and it won't matter how many bells and whistles the model has. Like Bill, I've stopped projects in the past due to bodywork or paint issues and won't continue with it till I sort it out. Thankfully because I do a bit of testing before I do any of that, those troubles are few and very far between. Just my 2¢ worth........ -

That blew me away! I had no idea they had shut down until I stumbled across a post on the Spotlight board and I thought "Huh??" I think the loss of The Modelhaus business had a lot to do with him closing I'm now hearing, but yeah............that came literally out of left field. Speaking of getting things you want in resin, a perfect example are those 10 spoke Shelby wheels I got for my Green Hornet which came from Plamoz. I happened to order them almost the moment when they said they were available and then recently I thought about getting another set. Nope. For whatever reason, they're no longer to be had. I don't know if the mold went bad, or what happened but one time they're available and then POOF they're gone! I've been checking their site to see if they were back, but it keeps saying "out of stock" with no word whatsoever that they'll be making them again. -

I've met Dale a number of times over the years. He lives not that far from me considering and I didn't know he was now 79. He gets around very well, but I know he's had some health troubles also in the past. As time marches on, it looks more and more like those of us that are really into this hobby, are going to have to find alternative sources for what we used to take for granted. That includes things like chroming. No one's getting any younger and those that we've known for years that are still doing this sort of thing be it chroming, casting or what have you.........may not be in the next few years to come. Not meaning to sound like a downer, but that's the reality of where we are today. -
From the way it looks you'd never know this kit was so cantankerous! It looks TERRIFIC!! Funny.........someone that might not be familiar with Spanish might see the word Papas and think it means Dads, when in fact it's 'potatoes' plural.

With the BIN sealer run through my airbrush, I don't really need to do any sanding. No, it's not gummy-----at least not that I've ever experienced. Yes, 91% alcohol is good to thin it with. I use my old Badger Crescendo for putting it on. Here are a few pics of models that I built in the past that I sealed with the BIN Zinsser before putting on the main primer coat and then color coats. My recent resto '74 Corvette......... Dodge Viper............ And the '59 Impala....... Now mind you none of these models were molded in red. My point here is that even for heavy bodywork such as was done on the Impala, BIN is great for sealing the plastic against the hotter solvents in the paint which many times does not play nice with body putties. If it seals against that, it'll keep the red out which in the case of the newer-softer plastics I highly advise anyway. Hope this helps!
-
I second what Dale said. I've been using BIN for years and have never had an issue with crazed plastic or bleed through. And yes, decanted in your airbrush is 100% better than straight from the can. Or you can go big and get this................ This will last you a loooong time!

LOL! I have to chuckle at that as he looks like a cousin of mine when he was younger! -

Thanks Bob, and thanks to everyone for the nice comments! Doing some bodywork on my next resto, so after a spell I'll have a new thread up on that. I don't think I'll have too many snags on that one since I originally built it! I ordered a new carburetor from Chief Joseph so I don't have to use the lump that the kit gave you. I should be getting it by next week, so I'll be able to jump right in head first to getting the engine redone. -

Just a quick note that I edited the pics on my second full post. Seemed a bit dark to me so those that wanted to copy them-------hope they look better on your monitor! -
I'm 'bout positive (Dominick would know), those look for all the world like Chief Joseph's of Fireball Models. I just ordered a set of those myself for my '68 'Vette resto............ain't that a TERRIFIC looking carburetor??
-
If only! I wouldn't be ridiculing, I'd be jumping for joy!
-
Pretty much like you mentioned. New hood, new exhaust, and new engine as the AAR's IIRC used a 340(?), not the Hemis that are in the current kits. Of course, proper decals would be needed and good ones not unreasonable facsimiles!
-
One can only hope they made the previously mentioned corrections. We'll see soon enough, but I'm a bit pessimistic they'll do so. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised.
-
Aaaaah! Now that looks sooooo much better! How come Revell couldn't see before this hit the streets that this still wasn't right?? Now I like Ed Sexton as I've met him a number of times over the years, but back when this was intro'd (2007-08??) I had mentioned to him at the NNL East that the shape still wasn't quite right. I had taken a number of pics of the test shot as it sat on the table at the show. Ed shook his head and said something like "Oh well, this is what we got". Of course, I never bought it but at least they finally got it (mostly) right with the latest version. Just a few tweaks here and there and the current one would be 'bout perfect.
