Trumpeter Bonneville
MrObsessive replied to RichCostello's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not 100% sure about this, but I thought that the convertible didn't have the correct interior in it. I don't have this one (I have the hardtop), but it was something to do with it not having the right pattern, or it was a custom or something. It's been so long that someone mentioned this kit I may have 'em mixed up with something else. Now the hardtop..........I could go on for hours with the issues on that one! -
Aaaah! A separate frame! Excellent, and trying to paint frame rails is one of my pet peeves when it comes to chassis detailing! Makes things so much easier........... That wouldn't be too hard if that never comes about to convert the hardtop into a coupe. They shared the same roofline, so one would only need to add the vent windows, and proper plastic stock for the window frames and posts.

This looks mighty nice from my end! I hope it's not to much to ask for a convertible from this? And yes, this certainly should have it all over those original '68 Chevelle annuals and kits.........LIGHT years ahead!

Aaah! Another one of my '50's favorites! I definitely gotta follow this one! I built this kit a looooong time ago (early '90's), and I don't remember it being a tough kit at all. That's more than I can say about other Revell kits. Is yours the softtop version or the hardtop? ROG did both and the version I originally built had the hardtop. IMO, the hardtop shape is not quite accurate, but nothing that some reworking can't fix. Keep us posted!

Very ambitious project Joe! I'll definitely be following along! I've heard old timers say that the 1960 Unibody frame was nothing more than the '57-'59 floor pan without the frame rails----just the front and rear subframes pretty much welded in. So pretty much what you're doing is spot on. Keep up the good work!

Getting really glued in windows out
MrObsessive replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, I've used mineral spirits in the past and that did work. Took awhile, but I was able to rescue the model without it becoming a bigger mess. As of right now, I'm restoring a '74 'Vette (no pics yet) which someone REALLY glued in the glass to the roof (the runner), and I did end up having to take a Dremel and grind out the rest. Usually I try to stay away from rescues like that, but this was otherwise not built badly. Total glue bombs nowadays for me are out of the question. -
News of Revell molding preparing in US

Man, that WOULD be something if that ever came to be! I can envision someone doing that 3D printed though. Expensive yes, but what a showpiece that would be when done! -

Hee-Hee!! -
Now that is lookin' so nice! To my view this car looks a little better with the thinner whitewalls. Perhaps a bit more 'trim' even though '61 was the last year for wide whites industry wide. That interior is KNOCKOUT! Your glass looks good from my end for sure!

Model Mania Top 20 NNL, 2018, 10th edition...
MrObsessive replied to Mad Slammer's topic in Contests and Shows
Ooooh! I'm in love with this one! From the one pic I saw, it won an award as well it should! I have this kit, but have been too chicken to start it! I see that the show was in Fajardo. At first look, that room looked familiar........similar to the one when I was there as a judge years ago, but that was in Caguas if I remember. Sigh............I'd sure loooooove to come back down there sometime! Especially when it's freezing cold here and too much snow! Is that Luis Ayala I see in the one pic? I wrote him a while back after that nasty hurricane, but that's the first I've seen him in years. Thanks for posting this Roberto..........I gotta save my pennies and dimes and get back down there to see you guys! -
I've not done weathered vehicles as that's not my forté, but this is VERY realistic! And yes, I have this kit but have never built it and each one I know that has, say that it's practically trouble free. You can expect no less from Tamiya. I'm torn though whether to build this '66, or down the road spend the money on Bestmodelcarparts.com's '57 VW transkit which is also very nice!

WOW Lee! For a snapper that turned out mighty nice!

Welcome to our plastic world Noman! I've been here for some time, and I think you might be the first person I've seen on here from Pakistan! Don't hesitate to ask questions if you're in a rut--------someone is bound to be able to answer anything you might need.

Wow! That looks terrific for a model that's 50 years old! In 1968, models were the furthest thing from my mind as I hated them as a kid! And yes, I'll echo what Ismael said...........I wouldn't change a thing!

Tom, I couldn't have said it better! Yes, nostalgia does play a big role in how we can perceive things. I can almost guarantee the young folks of today (under 30) might very well say the same thing about cars of that time 40 years hence. They'll look on today's cars as fond memories, even if they're not as passionate about cars as those of us out here in the lunatic fringe. Let's see.........they'll remember the car they had their first date in, went to the Prom in, the car they had when they got married, first child, etc. The car doesn't have to be the most rip snorting thing that was built----or the sexiest. It could be something as simple as a Hyundai Elantra for instance. Might not light our fires, but who's to say that it won't light quite a few folks' fires say in the year 2055??

I knew this one right away as I literally lived above the garage in an apartment where these were worked on for about 10 years. Unfortunately, not long ago I drove past the garage where I lived and it's a complete mess! Broken windows, a total mess inside, and believe it or not there are a couple Fiats still there. My former landlord still owns the place as far as I know and lives right around the corner. I'm surprised the Borough lets him keep the place in such shoddy shape with no notices plastered on the windows and doors. It wouldn't surprise me if I go past one day and see the place razed. Sad, as at one time that was a booming garage and dealership until Fiat pulled up roots and left the US back in the early '80's. -
Jason, you've done absolute justice to what I think is one of the most beautiful road racers of the'50's! Absolutely STUNNING build, and I love all the fine details!

TĂșlio, I have to say that I like those wheels MUCH better than those wires! I have this kit (picked it up real cheap at a show for $5.00!), and those wire wheels never looked right to me either. The wires are just too thick, and I don't think they suit the character of the car. Wire wheels seem to be more suited for a Lincoln. Gorgeous paint job BTW......LOVE that shade of green!

Effect of Moving Pictures On Fotki
MrObsessive replied to OldTrucker's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
To echo what Steve said, if you rearrange the pics in a particular folder, that should have no bearing on the pics showing here. If you were to move the pics to another album for instance, yes.....the URL would change and the pics won't show here. I rearrange photos all the time as I may want them numbered in a particular order, and the pics are still showing here on the board. I just had this happen the other day when I was making a post, and went to move the pic to another album after I posted. Sure enough, the pic was gone until I edited the post with the different URL and then it reappeared. -
Affordable high end 1/24 diecasts are still out there
MrObsessive replied to traditional's topic in Diecast Corner
While that's not my type of model I'd rush out a buy, it IS nice!! Lots of details for the price, and that black paintjob looks nearly flawless! That may very well be! If you remember the Chinese government seized the DM factories. The reason behind that I'm not sure, but it could be so that they could make their own gems like this without American involvement. -
I have to echo what Snake said. Your air source is VERY important when it comes to putting out a quality paint job. Case in point: Years ago (back in the '80's) when I was first getting into airbrushing, my 'source' of air was those little cans of compressed which I think they still sell today. They were okay for as far as it went, but it never seemed to fail that either I would run out of air when I needed that last coat on, or the can would 'freeze' and would be of no use. That's when I knew I needed a halfway decent compressor. Enter Badger's Whirlwind: This was a neat compressor for the time I needed it. IIRC, it cost something like $90 back in the late '80's, and I thought I was a big shot now! I had a compressor that the 'professionals' were using and my paint jobs did improve-----to a point. The problems came when it seemed like I was always replacing parts. Namely that gasket that goes in between the head and the air ports. They were always cracking and it got to a point where I got tired of replacing those, not to mention that the Whirlwind didn't have enough pressure to push Tamiya's paints through (water based) unless it was REALLY thinned down. Of course the more thinned down those paints are, the more difficult they're to work with. It was time to take a step up. I moved up to a Paasche compressor, and it to this day does what it does wonderfully! Nary a part has broke down, and I've had it I believe since the mid '90's. BUT! There are times when I may need to do marathon painting, and that Paasche for as good as it still is, it can get hot. Well, about 10 years ago I decided to buy this................ Yup! A nice heavy duty compressor I picked up from a club member who was selling them for $65! I snatched one up right quick, but it was kind of a beast to take up the stairs in to my hobby room. Nevertheless, it can run for hours without as much as a whimper, although it is noisy and had one of my cats literally jump straight up into the air when it turned on. So yeah a good airbrush is nice, but if you don't have the proper source of air to make it work as it should, it may was well be a nice paperweight.

GSL XXVII 2019, Who's gonna be there from here?...I will!
MrObsessive replied to simonr's topic in Contests and Shows
I thought the last show was to be in '23, so this is good to know. Still not sure I can make the next one. Certainly I'd like to get to the very last show as it'll be sad to see it go.
