  1. as i said, never trust someone who'll tell you how much they know at the drop of a hat
  2. i've always been leery of anyone who tells me how much they know
  3. my life changed the day i realized a 2" x 4" was, well, not.
  4. in addition to 3M wet & dry paper from the local autoshop and Stevens International sanding sticks,i've had pretty good luck with these: http://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/fa03000/#.VQiBFI7F9u4 (i know how much we like pictures) don't do too much customizing/ putty work, so mostly use 180, 220, & 320 grits, but there's more on both sides of those grades (finer & more coarse). there are also different brands of basically the same stuff at the big box stores in the paint department - just more expensive per pad/ smaller packages, but you won't have to wait for shipping or make an investment until you determine if you like them.
  5. practically: http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2012/12/05/on-the-trail-of-the-nash-pickup/?refer=news (i really didn't want to start a new thread just thought this looked good)
  6. and if any of the resin guys would consider a detailed K member, i'll take one.
  7. that's been my go-to reference for a few years now. this is available for ordering now and i think it'll be a good reference. maybe nothing different than is available online, but i still like paper & ink. never seen, or maybe actually noticed, a grille with body color infill. interesting that once something has been pointed out, how obvious it really is. like all the fender styles: "well of course it's different; anyone can see that!"
  8. well them last four post's giving me some good ponters; thanks. (see what i mean about having a Styling & Design Forum category?)
  9. for those of us mechanically challenged, does this mean it's not a matched body & frame, or did the model A poop out with the '29? and for those of us stylistically challenged (see where i'm going with this?), what nuances in the '30-1 body differ from the '28-9? the "hips" are approaching '32 width? is the radiator shell more square on top, less curved/ more rectilinear than the passenger version? trying to discern all these meaningful variations. thanks
  10. being reminded of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mickey_Thompson irked is really the wrong word, but more of an example of greed and sadness.
  11. those are pretty prominent. after you get the most obvious gone, you might try a guide coat of primer to help you see what's left.
  12. true, but by the time someone gains that much experience, quite often their position is undercut by a newcomer with "a pretty little certificate" or they've seen too much and realize their experience and paycheck are not going to coincide.
  13. that '34 Sophia looks like she just had a tune-up
  14. the announcer was going on and on about the show for next year. i believe he said it would be March 20, 2016 - but don't write that down in pen. the vendors will be the same, the location will be the same (i hope they turn on the ventilation fans- i came out smelling like homefries from the adjacent Holiday Inn restaurant), it's just the Masscar guys won't have judging & trophies. but might have model display tables. sounds like a big car kit flea market. i didn't see and great deals, some okay deals, and some priced 50% above internet shops. so i guess it pays off to be familiar with what you want. there were a lot of old boxes with high prices, AMT 1960 Ford pickup for $275. i guess it would be a complete unbuilt A grade kit for that? and a lot of Styline kits for around $100 - $125. a bunch of nicely built models, too. some real talented modelers. and some younger folks that i hope are developing a lifelong hobby. i don't take pictures; sorry to disappoint.
  15. i'm not savvy enough to quote this in another thread or vice versa, but this is pretty much validation we could use (yet!) another category: Design & Engineering - no; not volunteering for moderator position. follows my thought here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=99989 posts #11 & 12. "don't know how practical it would be, but i'd like to see a design category in the forum. i understand some threads discuss this, but there are enough serious modelers here who could offer guidelines or criteria. a perfect example is the engine proportion comment (above). i think scale difference can be used to advantage." "i realize this would blur the difference between engineering and art"
