A cat and model kit probably saved my life
ra7c7er replied to ra7c7er's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You know what's sad is that we have one. Well thought we did it was supposed to be hard wired but apparently the people that owned the house before us disconnected it and left it up so we never knew it didn't work. -
2011 Revell-Monogram fall releases
ra7c7er replied to Luc Janssens's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
LOL, nephew just told me he wants the Bell X-1 plane. For those of you with kids that watch the Arthur on PBS. It's the plane Arthur builds that his sister throws out the window. The plane can also be seen in many episodes when he is in his room. -

Scam pulled at Michael's stores
ra7c7er replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think it would have to be rigged swippers or an inside job. How would a non employee get enough time to install a new strip reader and the necessary transmitting equipment while the store was open. -

The Ford Cougar II. I have not attempted the kit but a friend gave his partially built one to me because he was so frustrated with it. -

About two months ago my girlfriend and I heard this weird thud in our house but couldn't find where it came from. Well yesterday I found it. I cleaned out our spare closet, which is the access to the water heater, so I could put my large model kits in there. I stacked some small boxes with loose parts on the shelf above the hang rail and while bringing kits into the closet my cat got in the closet jumped on the shelf and knocked over one of the boxes. I saw that some of the parts had fallen behind the access panel for the water heater. When I removed the panel I saw the water heater had fallen over against a wall so the Carbon Monoxide was venting into the house instead of out the flue. So for two months my girlfriend and I had been living in here breathing that stuff. It explains a lot of my headaches and my recent memory retention issues and my tiredness and well a lot more. Once I saw the water heater I opened every window in between the closet and the front door, grabbed the two cats and went outside, turned the gas off and called the subdivision manager and my stepdad (who I found out was on vacation in the Caribbean with my mom, guess I wasn't special enough to tell?). Luckily the subdivision maintenance guys were still around and they came right over and fixed everything . Less than 24 hours later and a trip to the ER later I am feeling better with only a long list of potential effects to watch out for. I for the first time in weeks don't have a headache. So I say thank you to my cat, Tyson, and Lindberg for making a model people couldn't finish. Also the maintenance guys who worked overtime for free to fix the water heater. I can't remember their names but I will send them cookies at Christmas if I can remember that. here is Tyson

Are real names required or not?
ra7c7er replied to Mike Kucaba's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Harry, I am not trying to get around the rule. But if you put your name in the profile and it comes up under your avatar when you post do you still have to have it in your signature? I mean even thought the rule said have your name in your signature I take that to mean just in your post and for me it is. Right on the left where it says full name. I don't really get why you have to have your name in the signature when it has a place already. Also for many users it won't let you edit your sig (that is my problem). So i either stick with what I have or erase it completely. -
kirkwood show this sunday
ra7c7er replied to route66modeler's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It was great meeting you. The show was great. I can't wait for the fall show and the IPMS show. I will say this though Their needs to be better advertisement for the show. If it wouldn't have been for Matt I wouldn't have known about the show and I told a few long time modelers I know about the show who didn't know about it either. I will be entering a model in the contest in the fall. Something for the Circle track category. -
Of course the jimmy flintstone girl will be ... umm ... a bit naughtier than the one that came in the kit

They can't police that you use your real name but they do ask that you do. Especially if trading. -
Yeah things are a lot better. I still don't have a real job but I finally have more than just a part time here and there job. In the last month I have volunteered for and worked 103 hours of overtime. My girlfriend while not overly supportive about me spending money knows I haven't had any money of my own for over two years and she know I am still saving also. So long as I continue to buy cheaply I will try to get as much as I can get my hands on. That race car I talked about over the winter is doing well to. For a 9 year old chassis that was in a flood, survived a garage fire, rebuilt by a washed up has been (me), and driven by a kid that has never driven faster than 100 anywhere before in his life. She is banging at the local track. In four race days finished 5, 2, 4, 5. When I watch the car go around the track it's almost hard to believe that one year ago at this time their was a raccoon living in the car. Thanks for the comment. It's nice to know someone noticed and remembered. Oh and when the overtime dries up I will leave more of the good deals to others

They had a contest but it was lacking in entrants. The stupid weather people were calling for severe storms all of Sunday and that probably kept tons of people way. Even a couple dealers decided not to come even though they paid for booths. Even with the lower attendance I thought the show was good. They had a steady stream of buyers all day and at one point you could hardly walk around. The contest to had great cars, I was amazed by some of them.

With all the negative that has been going around lately I thought I would post about a couple of the experiences I had at the local model show today. #1 - I showed up at the show at 8:30 (I thought traffic would be worse) and they were still in early admission till 10:00. I asked the guy at the front taking the money where Steve Doing's (route66modeler) booth was and he asked if I was helping him. I told him I was just there to trade a model and wasn't really there to buy anything. the guy let me in for free and even gave me a early bird sticker. It was very nice of him. After I sold a model I went back paid the admission. #2 - When I got to Steve's (route66modeler) booth he offered me $25 in trade for the model I brought. I didn't think it was worth much more than maybe 10 or so (I couldn't find the model on ebay or anywhere). When he said 25 I was stunned and asked him two more times before I picked out what I wanted. I was/am still new to the trading/buying/selling aspect of models and had no clue the model was worth that much. His honesty was appreciated. #3 - This is another nice dealer story. I didn't have much money to spend (I had only 17 in my pocket when I went through the door) but I did bring one large scale model I had hoping to sell or trade it. The dealer that expressed interest in it asked me what I wanted and I joked about wanting a grand for it. He asked if I knew what it was worth and I told him straight up that I didn't have a clue. He let me go behind his booth to use his computer to look up the model on ebay and other sites and after some looking I found that the model was worth somewhere in the 125-200 range and then he offered me 100 cash and a 10 dollar model I was eying I gladly took it. I know dealers make more customers being nice but I probably would have taken it if he would have said 35 bucks, I didn't know. He is another dealer I will seek out when going to shows. #4 - I was looking at a BMW model and I was getting ready to buy it when another buyer looked over and said are you buying that. I told him yeah and he said he didn't have that one and he was looking for it for his collection. I told him if he wanted it he could have it since I already had one at home and was just getting it because I like the car. We started talking and he told me he owned several BMW's and even works at a BMW shop. I told him my favorite BMWs were the E30 M3s and he said he had one at home. Right after that he got a phone call and said bye and left. About an hour later he came back and tapped on my shoulder and told me he brought his E30 M3 Evolution to show me. The car was sweet and apparently their are only a handful in the states. He then took me to his house to show me the rest of his cars and his entire three car garage full of BMW stuff. He even gave me a BMW shirt. Just goes to show a little nicety can go a long way. #5 - I bought a Dragon BMW M3 kit that was the special edition with the metal emblems. I didn't even notice the emblems were missing till the dealer flagged me down a bit later and gave them to me. He found them in the box he had the models packed in. He could have kept them and I would have never known but instead he sought me out to give them to me. All in all it was a great day. I showed up right at 8:30 and stayed almost all day (I left at 1:45, they closed at 2:30) with about a 45 minute trip to the BMW guys house. It was great and I joked that I should have just stayed the extra 45 minutes so I could have been there from open to close that's how much fun I had. I even watched a dealers booth for him while he went to the snack bar.

The local model show netted me all of this. I went for quantity over rarity so for the little money I had I came out with a bunch of stuff. Also a shout out to route66modeler. I met him at the show and two of these were his.
