New Drag parts...New Blower Hat, 12/11/12
1320wayne replied to 1320wayne's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I still have a few small tweaks to make on this one but that is pretty much the size of the scoop. It is actually perfect for what it represents but remember one thing. The picture I've shown has the scoop sitting on the hood of a body that has not had an area cut out for the scoop to set down inside so when it is used on a project it will sit just a bit lower in the body and should present a better look. Now, here is another one that I started working on today, and this is how far I've gotten so far. This scoop is more for the sportsman ranks, primarily rear engine super comp. dragsters or altereds. It is also a look from back in the 70's, 80's era that was used on quite a few cars. I still have more work to do to this one to get that "just right" look. -
Alaska State Trooper Tahoe
1320wayne replied to SFC_Allen's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice Earle. Nice, clean build. I built an Explorer, Alaska State Troopers SUV, earlier this year. They are fun projects. -
To the best of my knowledge of model car history the Bob Barnett Kopper Kart (shown above) was completely hand made/kitbashed/scratchbuilt, etc.. No resin castings in that build at all. Mark Gustavson would be the expert on this though. Either way, what you have is a great find, especially for only $16.

I Want to Make Resin Tires
1320wayne replied to coopdad's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Here is what I am currently doing. A two part polyurethane mold that was machined to achieve the right look for a racing slick with proper sidewall appearrance. It has a center buck to create a hollow tire. It is designed to be used with any of the flexible rubber resins so that when the cast is cured and you pull the mold apart you can stretch the tire away from the center part of the mold. Haven't quite got that part of the process to work out consistently yet. Still trying different compounds so that if/when I get a good casting the hollow tire won't collapse under the weight of the model. Until then I can still use the mold to pour traditional resins. The only catch is that when the casting is cured I have to cut the cast down the middle to get the center part of the mold out of the casting. Then glue the two halves back together and sand/smooth and paint. I am still playing with this process and trying to get a better handle on it. And this is merely a rather simple racing slick, with minimal detail. I can only imagine what a treaded tire would require for work. -

Try www.freemansupply.com they have a starter/sampler kit that only retails for about $25, and it includes multiple pieces of different grades of Renshape. -
New Drag parts...New Blower Hat, 12/11/12
1320wayne replied to 1320wayne's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I use a primer coat on this material as it will help you see any final imperfections that may need smoothing and it also gives the part a smooth coat as the bare renshape is a tiny bit grainey. I made some added adjustments to the scoop to reduce the heighth of the scoop. -

Thanks Daryl. The Camaro body is the 70 1/2 pro mod version that I created last year. It's another future body for casting. -
making resin engines
1320wayne replied to alarmstrong's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
It's always best to thoroughly wash each part that you cast and add a coat of primer before painting. Resins have an oil base to them that need to be washed away as well as any mold release chemical that may have been used. Also, when it comes to breaking down the components for casting it's best to realize that the more pieces you try to cast as one unit will produce more undercuts for the resin to have to penetrate as well as considering how fragile the mold will be with all of those extra angles to access and as time goes by the mold will most likely start to break apart, especially in those small detailed areas. Breaking down a complete engine in a format that would allow you to cast all parts as a one-piece mold works the best, in my opinion. However, some folks don't like all of the added assembly and lining up parts. -
Whoopiekat decals are great. I have never had any difficulties with any of the sets I've used. Alan, since your so into the sportsman style cars how about a Cotton Perry set for the Pocket Rocket Nova? That is one that I have always wanted to build.

New Drag parts...New Blower Hat, 12/11/12

Thanks. Nothing I do is in 16th scale. All my parts are in 25th scale. -
While working on getting the TEM resin line back in gear and available to the public again I have also decided to start creating some new parts for the line. Hopefully, within the next month or so I will have a website created to display everything available. Meanwhile, here is the first new part that I am working on. I received a large lot of Renshape from Chris when I took over the TEM line and have never used any of it until now. I don't know what I was waiting for as this stuff is so easy to work with. For anyone that doesn't know Renshape is a lightweight composite/wood material that can be used to create parts to be used as master for casting. So I went from this........ To this.......... And after mocking it on a body you can see that I still have some adjustments to make, such as cutting the bottom down and giving the scoop a wedge shape towards the rear of the scoop. I'm liking how this is coming out and for anyone interested I have plenty of additional scoops planned for future designs as well. I'm also hoing to focus on the smaller, sportsman style scoops as well.

You know, over the past couple of months I have tried to spend less time on the computer and more free time at the workbench getting projects done, but when you do that you miss these jaw-dropping, mind boggling builds. Bill this build is beyond speechless. I can't wait to see more.

Awesome work Tyrone. It's sad that I won't be able to see this one in person this weekend as my plans had to change and I am not able to make it to Atlanta. I'm pretty sure that this will get plenty of attention at the show. -

Super Gas Cobra.....Complete, 11/24/2012
1320wayne replied to 1320wayne's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Well, all of the interior work is now done. Steering wheel, chute release cable, gauge faces/tach., etc.. The body is now ready to be attached permanently and attach the cute shroud lines and release cable. Nearing completion. -
98 was the transition year. I have documentation of Ron Capps Copenhagen funny car from 97 that was using the traditional blower hat and then again in 98 where the team had switched over to a carbon fiber hat.

Model looks great Daryl. Tyrone, the date of the show is Nov. 10th.
