Alaska State Troopers Dio......updated 04/30/12
1320wayne replied to 1320wayne's topic in WIP: Dioramas
It could be the cop that has the problem as these dogs are supposed to be well trained and obey commands from their handler. Maybe all of those cold Alaska winters has number his senses. And, the guy hiding will eventually have a bright orange jumpsuit on that says corrections on the back. That should also help with the story line. -
My first trip to GSL was in 2003. Bob Paeth and I drove in from Portland when I lived out there for six years. Bob was a veteran of this event but it was my rookie encounter with the event that I had heard so much about and only seen from a magazine. I was pumped to say the least. Standing out in front of the host hotel on the opening morning with Bob, while he reaquainted himself with folks that he hadn't seen in years, a little white Jetta wagon pulls up with a mountain of a man behind the wheel (don't ask me how he fit inside). Mark gets out and starts greeting folks and when he gets to Bob, after his own greeting, Bob introduces me to Mark and I am welcomed in with a hearty handshake as if I had been attending this show for years. From there I was sold. That first event was a whirlwind for me, so much so that I made it a permanent plan to attend the next two after that. Unfortunately I haven't been able to attend the last two but very much plan to get back next year. I have been to so many contests all across the country and from my experience nothing really compares to Salt Lake. The level of competition is superb, each and every year. There is so much to do and so many great people to meet and strike up conversations with. If you can find the time to break away from the show and it's many seminars and numerous trips through the contest room, then checking out the city of Salt Lake is the thing to do. One of the nicest and cleanest cities you will ever venture to with plenty of history to endure. And who can make the trip to GSL without a stop at Crown Burger for lunch. Is this show for everyone? Probably not. I'm competitive by nature so I can appreciate the efforts that go into this event to preserve it as one of the premier competitions across the country. But it's just like any other show(s) that so many of us have attended over the years. There will always be someone who walks away thinking that they should have placed higher than the next guy or that they didn't get a fair shake for one reason or another. Almost impossible to avoid those situations in any show, even GSL. In the event video from 2001 I think Pat Bibeau (spelling?) from Canada stated it best when he said that in most contests if you have 10-12 models entered in a category you can most likely eliminate a portion of the entries and get down to about 4 or 5 that will vie for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards. At GSL if there are 10-12 models in a class then it's almost a forgone conclusion that every one of those entries could be a first place winner. So, if just once in your life, if you get the opportunity, you should make plans to attend this contest and see for yourself what it's all about.

Alaska State Troopers Dio......updated 04/30/12

So, more progress done. The scene is finally starting to come together and look like something. The vehicle is still not completed and only placed in the diorama for the sake of these pictures. Still some work left on it including the proper weathering. The turf is almost complete. I have to build it up in layers in some areas as a wilderness scene shouldn't have what appears to be nicely manicured lawn. All of the tress are in place along with the rocks which have been painted and weathered. The dirt road is done and weathered and tinted in different earth shades. The elk is also permanently attached. With any luck this one will be done within another week or so. -

Stupid Things You've Done While Modeling
1320wayne replied to Jdurg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I did something similar years ago. Thinking that heat would help cure a paint job quicker I placed a just finished body under a darfting lamp to help it dry faster. Apparently a little too close with the lamp as about 20 minutes later I looked over to check on it and the paint was bubbling from the heat. That was years ago and I am much smarter now.....................right! -
Very nice. Color combo. looks cool, especially bringing it into the wheels.

The one model you are most proud of.

Seeing Mark's Caterham in person at GSL back in 2007 was well worth the price of admission. As someone has already stated, just a slight bit of talent there and definately something to be proud of. I'm sure that everyone has one reason or another to be proud of something they have done. I take pride in my accomplishments for many different reasons, depending on the overall project. My best accomplishment to date would have to be this 69 Daytona Pro Mod. Probably my best paint job to date (far from perfect) and the overall build was a joy to do, including creating the master for the resin body. And I know that this is not a model car but one that I am equally as proud of would be this simple build of a 1/72 scale P-40 WWII aircraft. Nothing special in regards to the build but the subject represents a plane that my father-in-law serviced when he was stationed in Kiska, Alaska in 1942. The Aleutian Tigers flew out of the base that he was in and it was cool to learn from him as well as do added research on this small part of history. I presented this to him many years ago and he proudly displayed it on his desk. After he passed away a few years back it came back into my possession. -
Good deal Chuck. As soon as you have the red, white and blue set ready for print my money will be in your hand.

I've had the extra set of decals bonus a couple of times over the years but the biggest surprise was purchasing a Revell Monte Carlo Nascar kit and finding a Thunderbird kit in the box instead. The decals were correct but the kit itself was wrong.

Here is some more to update. Moving right along with getting the basic scene laid out. I was able to pour some rocks in resin using Woodlands Scenics rock molds. And I am finally starting to insert and lay out where the trees will go. I was able to notch the front right corner for the dead tree with the Eagles nest. And I have mocked up where the vehicle, people/dogs and assorted wildlife will be placed. More to follow soon. -

Looks great Chuck. I really want to do the red, white and blue Glidden version with my body but if no one else gets any decals ready within a short time I might have to change and go with a set of yours. -
Superb job Darren. I know you put a lot of work into this one and the final results paid off.

Since we already have Doctor Cranky, Jim, you should change your name to Professor Shiny. It's an honorary title but a noble one. Great news on the show. Mark me down as a source for help with whatever you need at putting this on.

O.K., so I laid out the plaster and body filler for the basic terrain and muddied road. I also did a quickie, light spray paint of the separation from road to ground just to get the basic effect of what it will look like once the grass and turf and muddy effects are added. -
Engine compartment decals/labels?
1320wayne replied to shucky's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the biggest problem with seeing anyone doing something like this is that most underhood markings would have to be reproduced at such a small image for 1/25th scale that unless you have a superior graphics program and quality decal production then the image just might not be legible enough. -

Who's screwed it up - then weathered it?
1320wayne replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is probably a mild example of what you are talking about but I did this to a Nascar build two years ago as some small areas of paint and decal were messed up and there was no reasonable way to fix the problem. If you look at the first picture you will see some decal seperation on the number 13 on the side. These decals were too rare and hard to find to simply order another set so with that and a few paint blems. I decided to do an "as raced" weathered build. I added some tire rubs and dirt splatter along the front end and hood. Just mild weathering. -
Looks good Greg. All of those parts look great including how Paul packages the engine kit. Awesome stuff.
