  1. There aren't a whole lot of options in the New York area that I have geen able to find. There's NNL East and the LIARS club for cars (neither of which I have able to attend so far), and Jerseyfest for sci-fi. I entered Jerseyfest two years in a row, and both times won nothing in their Open System contest. That was really discouraging. I once went the the Wonderfest sci-fi hobby show in Louisville, KY, and won a bronze award in their Open System contest. I once entered Bandai International's model contest at the New York Comic Con. I won a gold and a silver award, and two free model kits.
  2. I had a later release of that Firebird, without Travolta's name on it. It had a dual 4-barrel tunnel ram setup, with velocity stacks sticking out of the hood. As I remember, it wasn't a half-bad kit, my skills at the time were just not ready to do it justice. I'd love to find another one someday.
  3. 20-something years ago, as a teenager, I melted the body of an AMT Dodge Super Bee prostreet. My Dad gave me a can of engine degreaser to strip the paint off when I was out of brake fluid, and I used it without questioning him. I was devastated, but my Dad just laughed at me. To this day, I'm still convinced he handed me that stuff knowing the damage it would cause.
  4. Oh, no. Terry, i am so sorry for your loss.
  5. Over the weekend, I posted a brief comment on Michael's Facebook page about how much I enjoy shopping there, but that I would just like to see more and newer kits for sale. They followed up with a very non-commitally worded response about passing on my request to the appropriate parties. Hey, it was worth a shot right? Maybe if the members here were to also post to their facebook page, they might take a bit more notice?
  6. Sounds pretty good, Philip! I used to spend a bit of time messing with a slide on my electric guitar. I never got to be very good at it, but man, could it be a lot of fun. I used to tune to DADFAD, low to high, which I think equates to a D minor. I would use the three D strings to play most of the melodies, and throw in some double-stops with the fifths, inverted fifths and minor thirds to bring in some noise.
  7. Does it happen on all pages of the forum, or just certain pages? If it's only happening with certain pages, it's possible somebody's avatar is hosted on a domain that's been associated with malware attacks.
  8. I got skunked at a model contest. While i was there, I picked up some supplies, some funky tools and a Moebius Tumbler / Batmobile.
  9. Yes, thank you for sharing, Tom!
  10. I recently started having a similar problem with my android tablet, but not as bad as some of you are getting it. I can get back to the previous page, i just need to hit the back button twice. For a long time after the board started putting up ads, I was able to browse the forum without getting the glitch. If the ads are causing it, it may be that the ad provider has changed their coding.
  11. I want one of these so bad. I really like how the rims have separate lips to make painting easier.
  12. Bruckner Hobbies 3587 E Tremont Ave Bronx, NY 10465 This is my local hobby shop. Not a bad place. It is in one of the boroughs of New York City, so don't expect cheap, but it is cheaper than Manhattan and even some suburban places I have been to. Their main focus seems to be RC, but they do have a rather large selection of plastic kits and the supplies needed to build them. The customer service is decent (with a couple of hiccups here and there), and they are good about ordering stuff not in stock. If I call in advance, they will hold things behind the counter for me. http://www.brucknerhobbies.com/ (currently under construction, but there is a mail-to link for the shop's owner.) The Red Caboose 23 W 45th St New York, NY 10036 This is in Manhattan, New York City, so the prices can be up there. It's in the basement, so when you get to the address, you have to walk to the back of the lobby and take the stairs going down. Their main focus is model trains, but they do have a decent selection of plastic kits and building supplies. They have a rather extensive selection of paints. I have found some vintage kits there. The place is small, tightly packed and HOT. The proprietor is a bit odd, but knowledgeable. He will talk your ear off if you let him, but you will end up learning something. http://www.theredcaboose.com/ Lee's Toy and Hobby 935 Poquonnock Road Route 1 Groton, CT 06340 Sometimes I take my family on a trip to Mystic, CT, and will end up stopping here. The place is a mixed bag. The selection of plastic kits is extensive, but the prices for recent releases are way too high. I had decided to stop patronizing them after paying about $27 dollars for a Meyers Manx (and having my family followed around the store by a suspicious employee), but ended up going back on my most recent trip to the area hoping to pick up some back issues of MCM. It was then that I discovered that older kits were priced at a steal (and the earlier suspicious employee was no longer there). My wife and I picked up some early-2000's vintage kits for less than $15 dollars a piece. The store has a good selection of supplies, including scratch building materials. They also carry Games Workshop models and paints, for those who might be interested, but the prices are inflated on those, too. There is a decent (not great) BBQ restaurant named Chester's in the same shopping center, just a few stores down, and funky little consignment shop on the other side of the shopping center. http://www.leestoyandhobby.com/ Dan's Crafts and Things 352 Empire Blvd., Rochester, NY 14609 I have been here only once, but I was impressed. It's an arts and crafts store, but they have an extensive selection of plastic kits, and they even had a good number of Pegasus wheel and tire sets and other aftermarket stuff in stock. Prices were decent, about in line with what I would pay at Bruckner Hobbies here in the Bronx. Customer service was good. http://www.danscraftsandthings.com/
  13. That's awesome! You did an excellent weathering job.
  14. Nice! You say you built that? A very cool instrument. The only Dano i have in my collection is a 90's reissue Longhorn bass, in aqua green. Ugly color, but an awesome instrument, and alot of fun to play. I would love a Dano Hodad guitar, maybe someday...
  15. But there ARE people today doing more with their music than just making top 40 hits. You just don't hear about them... because they are not just making top 40 hits.
  16. I have a small setup for home recording, with a few different software programs, including apps usually associated with electronic and DJ music. I can tell you, there really isn't anything that lets you just hit a button and come up with an original song. This stuff is being put together with a lot of thought on the part of the producers. Unfortunately, the main focus for pop music tends to be making something easily digestible, something that doesn't require much thought on the part of the listener/consumer. In my opinion, what some people don't want to see, is that pop music has ALWAYS been that way. The tools have changed, the tempos have changed, the vocals have changed, but it still is designed as pablum to be disseminated by pretty people. Some people think their generation's pablum is superior, by virtue of being more familiar to them. The good stuff doesn't get found on radios. It gets found by word of mouth, at shows, by tape trading, and now via the internet in forums and chat rooms.
  17. Adam Savage from Mythbusters is a modeler. He has done it professionally, making filming miniatures and prototypes for toys.
  18. The idea sounds like Wonderfest, which is specific to sci-fi and fantasy modelling. Along with the contest, dealers room and industry guests, they have all-day hands-on seminars on Friday, with half-hour seminars on Saturday and Sunday. The organizers of Wonderfest go through a lot to get things together every year. A similar set-up for car modelling might have a bigger built-in audience available than sci-fi and fantasy, but it definitely would not be easy to organize.
  19. I usually order from hobbylinc.com. Their FAQ states that they will be slow to ship (5 days), but their prices are the best I have found on the internet (with the possible exception of some imports).
  20. I once travelled about 800 miles from NY to Louisville, KY, for a sci-fi modeling show. My wife and I shared the driving duties. I plan to be at NNL East this year, as it is less than an hour's drive for me.
  21. Everything in my stash was purchased with the intention of building it, or at least using it as kitbash fodder. I just don't build anywhere near as quickly as I buy.
  22. My wife used to build back when we were dating and when we were engaged. She stopped after we got married and she became pregnant with our first child. She never really went back to it, but she will get mad at me if i ever ask if i can build something from her old stash, even though she shows no interest in getting back into it. She did once accompany me to a big sci-fi hobby show in Kentucky, and even picked up a couple of figure kits for herself. Both of my daughters have shown interest, but i have no idea how long that will last. The 10 year old likes cars, Star Wars and Gundam. The 8 year old only cares about Super Deformed / BB Gundams. My son is on the severe end of the autism spectrum. I have shown him what I do, but he has never really showed any interest.
