People that claim they build "for themselves" and yet enter contests are not being honest with themselves. By definition, a contest is a competition, where your model is displayed in a public setting, competing with other people's models, and being judged by others. If you enter a model in competition, you can no longer say that you only build "for yourself." No model was ever entered into competition that wasn't looked at, and judged, by others. Entering contests while claiming you only build "for yourself" doesn't pass the logic test.

I also know my way around a stove pretty well. I can cook just about anything, some favorites are chili (my own recipe), Mexican stuff (enchiladas, fajitas, etc.) Chinese stir fry (all kinds) and of course Italian. My biggest problem is that I'm too lazy to actualy gather up all the ingredients and cook something from scratch, so I actually cook fairly rarely... but I'm good at it. Like Bernard mentioned, cooking from scratch beats nuking something in a box any time. BTW... that homemade pizza is making me hungry!

I wasn't talking about subject matter, I was talking about the level of effort put into the model. If you build a model with the intention of entering it into competition, of course you have to build it to impress others. The contest judges! Building just to amuse yourself and building with the intention of competing (and winning) are two different things.

The cars had special tiedowns built into the chassis just for this application. From wikipedia: The Chevrolet Vega was designed to be shipped vertically, nose down. Special rail cars known as "Vert-A-Pac" cars designed jointly between General Motors and theSouthern Pacific Railroad and held 30 Vegas versus 18 in normal tri-level autoracks. Each Vega was fitted with four removable, cast-steel sockets inserted into the undercarriage.[1] Chevrolet conducted vibration and low-speed crash tests to make sure nose-down Vegas wouldn't shift or be damaged in railcar collisions. Chevrolet's goal was to deliver Vegas topped with fluids and ready to drive to the dealership. To do this Vega engineers had to design a special engine oil baffle to prevent oil from entering the No. 1 cylinder, batteries had filler caps located high up on the rear edge of the case to prevent acid spilling, the carburetor float bowl had a special tube that drained gasoline into the vapor canister during shipment, and the windshield washer bottle stood at a 45 degree angle. Plastic spacers were wedged in beside the powertrain to prevent damage to engine and transmission mounts. The wedges were removed when cars were unloaded. The rail car doors were opened and closed by means of a forklift truck.[2]

The answer to the question is very easy. If you build models with the intention of entering contests, you obviously have to build to impress others. If you build models for your own enjoyment, what others think doesn't matter. Only you can decide how you want to take part in the hobby.
