Need paint shade closest to Chevy Red
espo replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
#1 choice would be to visit an auto supply store and they probably would have Chevrolet Engine Red spray paint. There are several ideas used by members here on what they use for red paint for a Chevrolet engine. I usually use either Tamiya TS-86 Pure Red for a spray paint or X-7 red in brush paint. Testors used to offer a brush paint that they listed as Chevrolet Engine paint but may be hard to find now. I'm sure there will be othewrs that will offer some other options to consider. -

Body colors? Era of the color you want to duplicate? Body or engine color? -
If you haven't already, check the O2 sensor since that is not an uncommon issue.

I like the idea of this build and the way you integrated the boom in the back. I understand that more than a few of these cars wound up being converted to more commercial uses since they were beefier than most light trucks of the day.

Slick looking paint finish and the color looks great. I liked watching how you built the chassis, and the wheels and tires look good.

While I think accenting the panel lines on body adds to the appearance, I think sometimes they are done darker than what the real deal would look like. In the past I have used the Tamiya panel line paint and like that it is offered in a couple of colors. But I remember someone here mentioning using the body color, thinned and a dash of black or a similar color in a darker shade added. I did a model in white and the black panel lines just look funny to me. Did another one using a gray color and it looked more natural to me. What I have started to do for myself is to use the body paint and add a small amount of flat black and some thinner so that it will flow in the body lines. I think it is something you just have to experiment with until you find what gives you the appearance you're after.

Having a Laguna front end would be a real bonus in my mind. -

The Lenny Pond Chevelle looks interesting. Might even try and make a streetcar out of it. The '29 Woody Sedan Delivery would be another. -
While valid points, I wonder just how much control Revell as a company has over the manufacturer and boxing of the kit. How much say they may or may not of had over which way the body is put into the box. I have to agree the reinforcing of any type for the roof of the model would have to be a good idea. How the product is placed in the box has a lot to do with the condition when it arrives at the retailer. Some have mentioned that a number of the models are sitting on the sales shelf with crush type damage which would seem like maybe the placing of the finished product into the shipping boxes. There seems to be any number of possible issues between the manufacturing and we as builders getting our hands on them.

Beautiful looking color and paint finish. Like the engine detailing and even the plug wires look like the original color. Great looking body chrome trim and grill.

While a lot of blame is pointed at Revell on the crushed boxes, this may have more to do with how they were handled once they were in the "pipeline" or shipping.

Great looking Cristine.

Great looking OOB build. Amazing how nice they can be with very clean assembly.

Beautiful looking trio of Impala SS's.

Beautiful looking paint work and the engine detailing looks great. Had a '66 Impala SS that same color, called Danube Blue. Personally, really like the subject and the way you built this.

This picture of the stock taillights is better than any I was able to find.

What did you see on the road today?

I think you have to be of a curtain age to know what an S type was. This looks the part, but it was common to make a regular Barracuda look like an S type back in the day. -
While admittedly not the same thing, when building this same kit and also wanting the dual quads I used the setup off of an AMT Chrysler 300 model. This gave me a dual quad manifold, carbs, and air cleaners. The bad news is that the offset style air cleaners that were OEM in the original application just does clear the hood. That said I think you could remove the connection between the carb mounting of the air cleaner and the air filter portion, then mount that on top of the carb. This would give you the same shape you're after but may not clear the hood when closed.

In many ways the world is a more enlightened place as to what is and isn't good for us. When my sons were born, during the last century, The handing out of cigars was a traditional thing for new fathers to do. In fact, at that time I was a two pack a day cigarette smoker. Thankfully I have outgrown that habit many years ago.

Googling '66 Pontiac wagons the pictures show a pretty good image. My impression comparing the Chevelle wagon taillights, and the Tempest is that the Chevelle lamps fit very flush with the shape of the body while the Tempest lamps are a little shorter since the backup lamps are in the bumper on the Tempest. There looks to be a raised edge around the lamps that isn't seen on the Chevelle. Maybe use the Chevelle lamps, shortened by removing the backup lights and create a small ridge to support the oblong taillights.

Try forehead grease sometime for a little different sheen. Semi-gloss or Flat paint may be an option as well.

There were times that it really looked like Jackie Gleasson was afraid of Audrey Medows when she would give him that Death Stare.

What is this please?

When I was in high school one of my friends father had a '58 Olds wagon, in purple no less. We got in so much trouble running around in that car. Very heavy but also very fast. -
Great looking paint work and body graphics.

Like the hood mods and the paint. The engine looks really well done.
