Looks good. Most of the hard work is done now all you have to do is a little detailing and it's done.

Patina’d 34 Pick Up
espo replied to OldNYJim's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Great looking frame, I like how you show where it bottomed out on the transmission support. -
The console looks great. The material for the wood looks very thin which is good for going around the fine details.

I think the one thing about this show that gets me, and this is so common on this type of show it seems. The whole thing is about the people in constant crises mode with unrealistic time lines and every one prancing about and then some bit of fluff installing something insignificant and thinking they're saving the day. OOO NOOO, we broke a nail. I want to see how and what is really going on with the car/truck/build. All these over inflated personalities are just getting in the way of any real meaningful information.

I'd be interested in any additional information about the 1958 annuals that you can share. I would love to do a big ol '58 Pontiac Bonneville.- 599 replies

Don't let the wood trim intimidate you. There are many tutorials here on the forum about this and almost as many different ways to do it. The first Woody Wagon I built scared me half to death since the kits decals were not cooperating with me. I do mine all by hand now. Many use generic decals also. I find it fun and creative now when I do pick-up beds and any wood trim at all. I think this gives a builder a chance to really get creative and show what can be done.

Nice to see you're getting back on this build. I'm a fan of the kit and the subject as well. The engine story is interesting and true. Chevrolet was after fleet business to move some iron and who knows how much they really saved by painting some 265 cu in engines yellow over the 283 cu in V8, but that is what they did. Most of the fleet cars were the old "Blue Flame 6" but I do remember seeing at least two civilian cars with the 265 engine long ago. What happened with your paint job that you needed to strip it ?

I need to talk to my wife about her shopping and checking food packaging. The seat pattern fits real nice and with the side panels done in the same material it starts to look like a great interior. For those not familiar with the OEM interiors of the day and the lower cost cars in particular they were pretty somber inside to say the least.

What did you see on the road today?
espo replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great looking El Camino. Just doing it's job I guess. I have had the good fortune to have owned two El Caminos at different times, and they were pampered and worked as they were designed to do. I would love to have another but they cost so much now you could almost buy a late model full size truck for the same money. -

Thank you. -
I have used them long ago. I have noticed them at Hobby Lobby and the Wal Mart but the formulas may have changed with time. What I do remember was that they seemed sort of "thick" and you had to be very carful about spraying to heavy of a coat of color and slow drying times. They did have some great colors and would general give you a smooth finish.

Good morning Mike. I would need to apologize for my writing about the problems I have had with Moebius on your build post. I don't regret what I said about my experience but my posting this where I did was inappropriate and I ask that you please except my apology for posting this here. I did not wish to detract in any way from your build on this model. I have followed many of your builds and enjoy reading your McNally writings. Should you wish to have the moderators remove my post I would be fully in support since again I don't want to take anything away from what you are doing here. Again please accept my apology for going off on an unrelated tangent. -
Watched him defile a late '40's Plymouth once. I'm out, but he must have his fans since he's back on the tube. '

I think what you'll find with these and just about any other "stickers" is that the edge will just be more visible than if you left them unpainted. -

You are not alone in your issues with Moebuis and their lack of interest in customer service. I had a big quality issue with a couple of the Plymouth 1 models. and a hardtop. The body lines were almost non existent and the body finish was unbelievably bad on another one,. They didn't even want to talk to me when I called and were even to the point of being rude. I find this a shame since when they do get it right , like the Hudson's, they have a great kit. I don't like speaking badly about valuable suppliers and kit makers, but their attitude has prevented me from buying some of their kits that I really wanted to build. I hope you're able to save this one as they look great when you get a good one. -
Looking at your two interior picture the first one would give you two contrasting colors to the exterior and the second picture, a different year model but all the same, would be a nice light colored complementary color. Either way should look great and the wood trim is what will really make this interior standout.

I agree with MRM on the possibilities of expanding the '32 or even the 33/34 lines. I would like to add the thought of what the could do with the '46/'48 Ford body as well. They have the Woody and Convertible plus the coup, why not have a tudor sedan also ? I know there are those who would also like a fore door.

espo replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
That's encouraging looking looking. Most of the old Craftsman line were curb side style with little or no chassis detail and a hood molded shut. This looks like a lot of the basic hard work is done and the chassis is sort of what they offered at the time. A good 6 cyl. or small block would be the easy part of this build. Based on this I'll now be interested in buying one.- 599 replies

Man that color is striking to say the least. I like the bright white interior. I would keep those old Hurst Mags around as a switch set of wheels. Very nice job getting the rear of the roof to match up with the body. Like you I'm also a fan of the early AMT bodies but with the metal axles I just cut them to length and use them as a spindle and fill the hole in the engine. This along with a little radiator detailing and hoses and they look almost as nice as any of the newer better designed kits. You got all of the chrome trim nice and cleanly done.
-
Great looking El Camino. Nice paint finish and interior. This kits drive train is little more than a suggestion of what the real thing looks like but the way you used colors to detail the engine area it turned out very nice.
-
I agree, that may make a better match. The Interior color ? Now this is an area where you could go with some grays and black trim, or there are some military shades with hints of a very light beigh that will also match up with some silvers. Your going to need to buy some more spoons for testing.

I never realized just how good the Gremlin could look. I like the lack of chrome trim on this and the well detailed engine.
