Li'L Digger
TooOld replied to ModelcarJR's topic in All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
Great save John , always cool to see a Weird-Ohs built and Digger has always been my favorite ! I built a Digger a couple of years ago and had forgotten how big he is , that's why I built my Li'l Digger which is much smaller than the original . -

1/72 Gee Bee
TooOld replied to cobraman's topic in All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
Boy that's really tiny ! Always liked the Gee Bee planes , nice job Ray ! Even with the mis-color the scallops look cool , I built a bit larger one years ago and they were a real pain with no decals . -
I should have remembered they were breathers . . . my memory gets a little fuzzy these days . I have that photo and a few more showing the oil tank and battery mounting and I plan on adding those also . The oil pan in the kit is flat like a dry sump and rests directly on the crossmember but there's enough material that some can be removed from the crossmember to lower the engine maybe 1/16" or so . That along with modifying the "breathers" should solve the issues .

If you look near the end of HPI Guy's video on You Tube he angled his down for clearance and it looks terrible , not only that but there would be no way to add oil to the engine ! If you look at the pre-production one Art Laski built he's cut down the caps (and maybe the tubes) , funny that neither of them mention this . I installed the engine again and used a strip of rectangular stock to measure the clearance , I bent a slight curve in the plastic to match the inside of the hood . In this photo you can see that the fill caps need to be lowered 3/32" to achieve zero clearance , clearance at the tubes right now isn't measurable . Here's another angle . Shortening the tubes at the valve covers and/or grinding the tops of the caps would probably be enough to fix this . On the right you can see there is currently 1/16" clearance at the carburetor , when I install the air filter housing the hood will just barely close and it does hit . I'm going to look closer at modifying the tubes and caps . I also think another alternative would be to lower the engine by modifying the crossmember , if doable this would solve everything .

I noticed that when I fit the engine into the chassis , looks like Salvino's may have missed this . I've looked at a couple of finished models on line and they both have the tube/caps modified to sit much lower . Haven't decided yet how to handle this .

Built one of the MPC kits back in the 80's and have another in my stash , guess they deserve all the bad press but I like them too ! Following along to maybe get me motivated to build it . Never seen that paint before , looks interesting !

Thanks for the info DW ! After looking at some photos I suspected it was pretty close so I'm going to leave it as is .

The engine is about finished for now . I modified the kit carburetor and added linkage/springs and a throttle cable , added an alternator from my parts box (replacing the blob of plastic that's in the kit) and made some brackets for it , and finally I made a fuel pump and added the fuel lines . Before continuing I need to check the ride height and make any necessary changes so I temporarily installed the front & rear suspension/wheels & tires . Salvinos includes a half dozen lowering blocks for the rear axle and the instructions say to add one block to each leaf spring so that's where I started . This photo shows the front assembled OOB and the rear with one lowering block . It looks pretty good but I may lower the rear a little bit more , what do you guys think ?

Don't know about that , these guys know a lot more than I do about vintage race cars . Thanks James !
