Rare Kits... prices.

Looks like EBay have set up the auto emailing to keep bids being generated? Smart and not illegal to generate more commission! -

Rare Kits... prices.
Bugatti Fan replied to Brutalform's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Read somewhere on another forum that EBay are now charging 13 percent on transactions. Is this true as I have never used it? Rare plastic kits are only valuable as kits unfortunately. I approached an auction house about selling some of my built up plastic models and they expressed no interest in built up plastic kits no matter what standard. -
Does this stop at politicians?

Sabine was a great member of the BBC Top Gear team, with a good sense of humour. Sadly snatched away by a disease that respects no one.

Cooper barn find

There were some nice pictures of Dale's work in that book. I sold it on years ago, but seem to remember quite a bit of duplication of photos etc within. -

Just shows by Andrew what can be done with those old Merit car kits. A beautiful super detailing job. As far as my memory serves me apart from the Cooper, the only other Merit car kits that had engine details were the Alfa Romeo and the Talbot Lago. The rest of them were kerbside models I believe. Just out of curiosity, Merit also made a kit of Donald Campbell's ill fated Bluebird Water Speed Record Boat. As Michael Caine would say 'Not a lot of people know that!' Dale King. Now there is a blast from the past! His Cooper scratch built is also a sight to behold. I can remember an old car modelling book by Robert Schleicher that featured a scratch built Fiat sports car and a highly detailed Tamiya Porsche by Dale. Is he still building models? -

Popular show way back in the 60's. Besides the family there was their straight laced lady advisor from the bank I think on the show. I can remember one episode where Jethro came home and asked ' What's for dinner Grandma?' To which she replied 'Possum innards!' Then he asked about dinner tomorrow and Grandma's reply was 'Leftovers!' I would like to get hold of one of those old kits. Funnily enough I still have a weathering article on the kit from an old copy of Model Car Science. Saved it in a folder from one of the very few copies that turned up in the UK at the time. -
Are Back Issues Available ?

Andrew, what a superb job you are doing with that old Merit kit! The little Cooper lends itself well to all the extra detailing that you are doing, and just shows what can be done with those old kits. As far as I can remember, the rest of the series were models with no engine details apart from the Alfetta and Talbot Lago kits. The latter two have done the rounds having been produced by SMER and I think that Atlantis now have the mould tooling. Everything else was sold off to a toy company in Italy and never heard of again. I have seen some super builds of those Merit Racing Cars by a certain guy over here in the UK who brings the models to some of the shows. So it just shows like you have, what can be done with them. A nice challenge from modern kits to bring up to display standard. Incidentally, Merit also produced a model of Donald Campbell's Bluebird World Record Attempt Boat back in the 1960's. -

By that tired old kit I was referring to the moulds getting more and more worn over the years with the number of re releases. I agree the shape and detailing were not that bad and can remember making one way back. The old Aurora offering was a kit I just took a look at and sold on, and agree it was dire! It will be interesting to see what you think of the new Revell kit Matt. Cheers N

A really lovely model Kurt. I think FPP Modelos might have made a kit of the Bugatti 251 some time ago. I think that they supply made up wire wheel sets for modellers as well as the kits.

Truly museum quality Lars! Your build may inspire others to dig out that old kit that they had languishing away for years and do something remarkable with it as you have done. A good quality acrylic or glass display case might be a good investment for a model of this quality if you have not got one for it already.

The 1/8th scale one referred to in an earlier post is probably a re pop of the old Monogram kit from way back in the Sixties. It will probably show its age a bit as kits have come a long way since then, but none the less it is a nice model kit that would provide good fodder for the super detailer. The newly tooled Revell Germany E Types in 1/24th scale look good and not before time to replace that tired old kit that Revell US made way back in the sixties that I think may have been 1/25th scale.

Articles now being paid for?
Bugatti Fan replied to BSteinIPMS's topic in Model Cars Magazine News and Discussions
In one of Larry Greenberg's posts replying to Bob Steinbrunn he mentioned that past remuneration issues would be sorted out. Danno asked, 'What's the point in Bob raising this issue after 4 or 5 years?' Well, maybe there is a point as I would imagine that Bob's article was probably commissioned at the time. If past remuneration issues were to be sorted out when the magazine gets back on its feet that would be great and encourage good previous lost writers back to contribute to the magazine. Replacing Harry Pristovnik, the magazine's main layout man (and also an excellent auto modeller in his own right) was never going to be easy, so let's hope the magazine will prosper under the new regime. -

Geoff, as a Menzies/WHSmith shareholder you may be in a better position than most to see if WHSmith could hold MCM. They have Fine Scale Modeler on their shelf regularly that is another American publication. I think they also have an American Railroader magazine stocked regularly. -
Well Mike, you finally finished ' Polishing that turd' as you succinctly described it. Considering the difficulties encountered you made a really nice model from it. So credit where it is due for your perseverance and patience to see it through. Those old Heller car kits are shall we say 'challenging' and some have idiosyncracies. I had their Delage kit that had a joint right across the rear fenders and would be very difficult to fill in , rub down and paint to hide it. It was just weird why Heller would tool it like that! Did not bother and sold it on. I have their Renault Paris Bus to build, but will probably persevere with it as the vehicle has so much Gallic character!

Well Mike, you certainly did a good job ' Polishing a turd' as you described it. I Those old Heller kits are a bit shall we say 'challenging' at times. I have their Renault Paris Bus to build and hope it is less fraught with the problems that you needed to overcome on the E Type Jag..

Steve, Thanks for your feed back. I have only built the Hubley Duesie and Packard and was not aware that the Fords have no plated parts.
